View Full Version : What is the opinion of the 3DO here?

Just curious, as it seems that the 3DO as a system seems to get alot of heat these days, but I have to ask really, what do you guys think of the machine, and not as a collector's piece either, as I know that they are cool to have as collector's pieces because everyone looks at them and has no clue what in the Hell they are. I am actually talking about removing it from it's box and playing it. I know I am a collector, but I also play my systems and games, it's just the way I am, which is why I try really hard not to get sealed stuff because I know I will open it and play it! Seriously though, thoughts?

It's like most systems, has some really good games, and a bunch of stinkers.

Star Control 2, Super SF2 Turbo, Gex, and Way of the Warrior are all good for a larf.

No sir I dont like it. I only bought a 3DO because it was a system I didnt own and I was curious about it. I wasnt expecting much from it and thats exactly what I got. The only game I really put time into was Gex but it is a conversation starter because most people dont know what it is. Thats a plus right? Right?

As you will probably gather from my comments in these threads, a very worthwhile system to play and to collect for. Our leader Joe will also throw his weight behind it. The cool thing about the 3DO is not only does it have its share of great games, but it has double or triple its share of "so bad it's good" games. Most of the people who are against it haven't played it very much (admittedly I find this is the case with most people who are against a particular system). To give you some idea I have 10 Saturn games (down from about 100) and a nearly complete 3DO collection.

Nice, I will have to check out those threads. I am just getting back into collecting for the 3DO, and am happy because I missed the system. I loved Crash N' Burn, that game is top man, some cool stuff, and I don't care what anyone has to say, damnit! 8-)

I owned it at one time (original Panasonic unit). I also had many of the Top 20 mentioned in that other thread. The 3DO was an amazing piece of equipment as well as being ahead of its time in many ways. What it lacked was solid titles. Of the “Top 20” I really did not care for many. Super Street Fighter II was good but the 3DO controller sucked and getting a 6 –button for one is expensive. Other than that I found little reason to hold on ot mine and I landed up selling it to further my Neo Geo collection.

also when it comes to imports there were some very interesting(?) titles for 3DO ^ ^

I love my Sanyo 3DO Try unit - in fact I bought the another one as the back up in case the current one failed one day.

I also like the system because of it's games that are so terrible that they're entertaining. Escape from Monster Manor takes the cake in this category, followed by Way of the Warrior. You also have decent versions of Myst and Primal Rage to play.

Love the 3do. There's just something about it.

Sure there's a boat load of crap games (except Plumber's Don't Wear Ties!) but there are some golden nuggets as well

Gex
Theme Park
SF 2 Turbo
Cannon Fodder
Return Fire
Star Control 2
Road Rash
Need For Speed
and many others (too tired to think)

I'm a fmv junky, so I love it.

I picked one up a few years ago, and to say it was worth the price I paid was an understatement.

It's a brilliant system, with some cracking games, and to think it was released nearly 2 years before the PS1 / Saturn, it certainly holds up in the graphics department.

Worth the money for Super Wing Commander on it's own.

I have one and a bunch of games for it. Draxon's Revenge and some others are great but overall I don't think I'd miss it too much. Nice Syndicate port too though.

There's a bunch of FPS games on it that each had something unique that set them apart from the crowd at the time but every single one got ported to the PSX/Saturn/PC/all three later on so it's kind of obsolete unless you have Captain Quazar and Stellar 7.

Have a link to some screen shots dude? I'd love to see that game as I am a bonafide wrestling fan. Well, the older stuff that is as the current crop of WWE stuff sucks ass!

The 3DO was a mighty platform. Filled to the brim with mediocrity. Yet it has a few moments of joy.

My blog: http://fz1-3do.blog.co.uk covers some 160 of the games but some highlights, for me at least, I've listed.

(Having played about 200 3DO games in the last year...)

Wing Commander III. Best game for the 3DO platform.
Need for Speed. The only version worth playing ever.
Lucienne's Quest. A beginners RPG - I'm playing right now!
Dr Hauzer. Japanese but import friendly.
Street Fighter 2 turbo. Best conversion.
Alone in the dark. Short but sweet.
Road Rash. Fun.
D. Short but sweeter.
Return Fire. Fun. Fun. Fun.
Guardians War. Tactical RPG fun.
Virtual Cameraman 1 to 5. ...ahem.
Space Hulk. 'kin amazing.
CPU Bach. Qwirky none-gaming fun.
Snow Job. Interactive movie goodness.
Immercenary. Weird RPG...
Star fighter. Fly 'em up.

...some others.

The rest is a matter of taste. It was home to best that Tom Zito had to offer. Night Trap, Supreme Warrior, etc.

Another world, Megarace, Microcosm all looked their best on the 24bit graphics platform...

Import friendly too! Thanks to region free of nearly everything available.

Will

Royal Wrestling on the 3DO is baffling. Fun, I guess, if you like wrestling games... (Maybe!)

Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon S for the 3DO is one of the hardest to find Sailormoon games now days. A good fighter that expands on the basics of the Sailormoon S Super Famicom fighting game with nice hand drawn looking sprites. I still like the Sailormoon SuperS Super Famicom fighting game a tiny bit more, but the 3DO entry is still a lot of fun.

One of the Sailormoon fighting games should have had an arcade release - instead of just that beat 'em up with the cheap bosses and the quiz board game that I'd love to see translated. LOL

Immercenary. Weird RPG...

That game is borderline unplayable. I've put so much time into it, it's horrendous in every possible way.

Defcon 5 is accomplishes a better atmosphere with pretty much no real NPC interaction. No US release but Data East published the Saturn/PSX ports here. Much better than PO'ed and Killing Time if you ask me.

Nothing tops Space Hulk for first person 3DO games though. Some genius should make a Doom 3 mod...

I can give Immercanary some credit as a very interresting thought for a game, although I think that more could have went onto it. If a little more thought had went into the gameplay, it would have been alot better than it was.

Theres a few things i like about the 3DO, it took me forever to get one but when i did it came with a stack of games. I really enjoy wolfenstein 3d, The only other console i can think of that has it is the snes, the 3do port is polished. Spacehulk and the horde are games i already had on the saturn, the 3do versions are just as enjoyable. Samurai showdown, ssf2, N4S and roadrash are worth a mention.

The Jaguar had the best home port of Wolfenstein in my opinion, actually. But what I've really enjoyed is playing the WolfenDOOM games on my Dreamcast, those are really fun. I'm not a big FPS fan, but Wolfenstein I like.

The Horde is indeed pretty cool. Doesn't get enough credit either on the 3DO or the Saturn, probably because it just looks like any 16-bit game, but it's really a lot of fun.

Yeah, I am waiting on my new 3DO to show up as my old one died awhile back, so that was a total bummer. It was a Goldstar one though, so I was waiting for it to happen. It is taking too long to get here though. I want to play so bad as I have missed it. And yeah, I agree with you guys thatthe Jaguar had the most amazing version of Wolfenstein 3d period. It even hauls over the PC version, so it is quite impressive!

Well.

I have to admit when I have fellow gamers over I make them watch the intro and opening cutscene for maximum hilarity. Good idea but the engine used, the graphical design, the voice acting, the controls, it feels like a big mess to me.

The Horde is awesome. I'm surprised the FMV/Kirk Cameron factor along with the gun gameplay hasn't given it a cult following beyond the few people that enjoy it.

Right there with you. When I had a 3DO that worked, I always wanted to play or get Captain Quasar. I did finally find one in 99' I think, but the disc was so scratched, you could only get through the 1st level before the game froze up.

On the subject of my opinion of the 3DO, It was always one of my favorite systems I have ever owned. Great Games: Road Rash, The Incredable Machine, And SSF2turbo. One game good for a laugh was Twisted. Worst game I've ever owned for the system was Plumbers don't wear ties. Wish mine 3DO still worked. :(

My short answer to the original question is that I love the system. The FZ-1 is built like a tank. The games are mosly laughable at best, but hold entertainment values. Historicaly the system is the first true CD system to hit the US. I think that the 3DO gets lost in the plethora of video game collectables of the 90s. The competition during that time period was fierce. The 3DO was truly what I feel the first "modern console". The system was set up to truly be an entertainment piece, and do much more than play games. As a collector of the bizarre, I love the system for many reasons. 1. FMV humor. There is some truly laughably bad games on the system(Shadow War of Succession) 2. Cool longboxes. Putting these games on shelves makes them stand out as different. 3. Historical Significance...how to not do a 700 dollar machine(are you hearing this Sony?) I could go on and on but if you have not checked out the system, it is worth owning and playing. Many have pointed out some of the better games, I would add to those that Ballz 3D directors cut is unique and good. Icebreaker comes to mind for strange as well. I heard that Icebreaker 2 will come out some time, but who knows when...

Great system IMO.

I remember these games fondly:

- Road Rash
- Crash and Burn
- Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo (the only home port of this for many years, if my memory serves me correctly)
- Samurai Showdown
- Demolition Man (see this thread (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=94421))
- Way of the Warrior (okay, this was garbage, but who can forget it for its camp value)
- Soccer Kid
- The Incredible Machine
- Return Fire
- Gex

I wish I still had a 3D0.

Does anyone even remember the Dungeons and Dragons games for this machine? Both Slayer and Deathkeep were severly fun and overlooked titles. It is sad when you think about it too as they were unique also. Mind you, I know that Slayer was better than Deathkeep, but for those of you that were ADF&D fans, they are must play games!
Another fun one was the game Guardian War, very fun and overlooked game. Very starnge and fun as well. I love my 3DO systems and just might have a FZ-10 I will be letting go of with a control pad and connections. I might even have a couple of games to throw in as well like Road Rash. PM if interrested as I am looking for a few trades possibly.

Although I only got one a few months ago, I think the 3DO is a pretty decent system. It may not have the strongest library of games, but it certainly doesn't have the worst either. Star Control 2 is looking like it's going to be my fave.

And this is sort of off topic, but I figured I'd post it here anyway...Is there any sort of homebrew development for the system at all? I mean, even the Jaguar gets more love than the 3DO. :)

I've always wanted to love it, I go back to it a few times a year (I even bought the over priced gun to try out some shooters), but after 5 minutes I realize the game I'm playing either completely sucks or I'd rather play it on a different system (e.g. road rash on genesis rather than 3d0). Too bad the Army Men series wasn't created back then, that would have been the one game I'm sure I would have loved to play on that system.

Again, the problem with the 3DO havinbg a homebrew life is the fact that none of the documentation on how to make the discs work on it is out there. Ask the guys at Good Deal Games that have been trying to hack the thing forever as they have unreleased games just sitting around that they can't do anything with because of this.

I've always loved the 3DO as far as I can remember. There were lots of good games for it, and when I was younger, I was easily able to forgive its games flaws just because I thought it was fun. I played the 3DO version of doom more times than I could count. Why you ask? cuz I nevered cared about the flaws. 3DO is one of my favorite disk based systems from the 90's, next to Saturn.

I think the 3DO is pretty cool... Need for Speed is still as fun as it ever was... and way better than the Saturn and PS1 versions, IMO... talk about a slice of history too... who knew that this 3DO exclusive launch title would become such a huge franchise? and that no other version of the game would be the same as the original 3DO exclusive? I think it's worth owning one just for that!

I actually liked the 3DO a lot. i didn't get the system until years after it had been officially killed off but I think it had a lot of potential, especially technically. The idea of licensing the hardware out to different companies was actually a smart move in my opinion (for a newcomer into the market in the 90s) and the 3D visuals were actually pretty decent - far beyond what the comparable Jaguar was capable of.

If it were $249/$299 at launch, I'm sure it would have been a bigger hit, especially in Japan.

I've had very limited experience with the 3D0. I never see them used or in the wild. I remember them being promoted at a few electronic stores for their FMV games...which typically was bad acting followed by a very mediocre game. There might be good titles on the system, but I never got the chance to see them
