View Full Version : What do you prefer to collect?
I love getting a new system. It opens up a whole new world of possibilities for games. Last week I got 2 new systems: N64 and Atari 600XL. :D

Thats a TOUGH one, but getting a new system (especially some obscure one) is really cool......but then again, games is what its all about.

I think I am in the minority, but I prefer to collect odd-ball systems. I really like having an obsecure system with a few of its best games as opposed to having every game ever released for every system.
That being said, I do put a lot of emphasis on collecting games themselves. However, I only collect games that interest me; ones that I will play.
There are only two systems that I have decided to "collect" for. Microvision and 32X. Both have small game libraries and I really love the outcast view of both of these consoles.
I want to collect again in the future, and I am looking heavily at Fairchild Channel-F and RCA Studio II. By the way, where's the homebrew for these forgotten systems?
I so badly want to do a homebrew for Microvision. :)

If you would've asked me 5 years ago, it would've been systems. If you would've asked 3 years ago, it would have been games. If you would've asked 1 year ago, it would've been accessories.
Since you're asking now, you get merchandise. This must be the Cycle of the Collector or something... It's kind of like social issues. The poor people fight for the highest ideals: equality and the like. The middle class takes issue with more mundane facets of life--say, the condition of our economy. Meanwhile, the fat cats (who are just poor people who made it) are worried about fur coats and the rainforest--and that's fine, too. No class is inherently worse than the other; it's just that, depending on where you're coming from, you are presented with a different view of which battles are going on in the world.
In terms of game collecting, I consider myself a fat cat: I've moved on to the finer points. It's still all about the games, of course. After all, a fat cat has to eat just like a starving cat. However, it's more about refining the experience. I accomplish that by playing video games in a pit full of Mario plushes. 'Merchandise, my friend.

Systems are great and in some ways easier to collect because there isn't many systems as games but without games systems are useless.

Getting a new system is always great but I limit how many systems I get per year, purely due to storage considerations! And tbh collecting games also does it for me, so games.

It's still systems for me, but I'm starting to to reach the limits of enthusiasm for this. I recently sold off a bunch of systems (TG-16, Saturn, NES) that I just wasn't doing anything with. Admittedly it feels pretty good to have the extra space.

I love collecting games! I try and own one console at a time and collect as much as possible for it. Rarities are never a big deal for me. I just love a large library of games to choose from.
Right now I'm currently in the midst of getting dreamcast games.

For me, I'm almost stictly a games collector.
For some consoles that I collect for, I don't even have any of the hardware to go with all of the games I bought, which means I'll probably never play them.
Stuff like 32X, 7800 and some other systems. I've got tons of games, but no 32X or no 7800.

well like most people I love to collect games, but I probably get the most excited over a new system that I get.

I don't collect complete game sets. Instead I collect specific genres, themes, from certain developers, etc etc.

The games mainly, the consoles are just a necessity to play said games.
Although I did get a PC Engine Duo R and a NeoGeo simply because I always wanted them for maaaany years, since I was 12. Turns out they both have good libraries of excellent games though.
The rest of the consoles are there just for their games. Certainly the PSone is only there because of the games; I have no love for Sony hardware. Although I too love getting a new piece of hardware and setting it up next to the others.

Used to be mostly games, some accessories. Now it's mostly accessories, some games ;)

I had to go with other, as there was no option for all. I love to collect systems, games, and accessories. I have a definate hardware fetish. But, as others have said, it's all useless without the games.

It's all about the games. I play everything I get my hands on and if I don't care for it that much it either gets resold or sits on a shelf collecting dust, waiting for that eventful day that it'll be played again.

I'd have to say games. Only because there are only so many systems to buy really.

I love collecting all of the above.
But right now I'm more into building up my game collection. With the Xbox 360 out, and the PS3 and Wii around the corner, current generation games are at rock bottom prices all over the place. I've been stocking up like crazy.

When I think of collecting, I think of acquring something that you don't have any plans of selling in the near future. So for me, the only thing that I really collect is classic gaming mags. I'm primarily interested in mags from 1988 to 1997 or so. Slowly but surely, I've been working on collections of all these mags:
Die Hard GameFan
Next-Generation
Video Games & Computer Entertainment
EGM
Game Players
Play magazine
Gamer's Republic
GMR
Games TM
PS Extreme
Game Informer
Gamepro
EGM2
I have a complete collection of Next-Generation (although I'm missing the issue that they handed out at one e3, the one with the gold N64 zelda cart on the cover. I'm pretty sure it's just a cover variation of one of the issues I already have, but I can't quite say that my collection of Next-Gen is fully complete until I get that issue. GameFan is my all time favorite magazine, and right now I only need the 3 catalog issues, and about 4 regular issues. Of course the catalog issues are super rare, so those will be hard to find.
Eventually I hope to have the full run of VG & CE and Game Players and Ultra Game Players and the first 100 issues of EGM and GamePro.
When it comes to games and systems, I don't really collect them, because I know that at some point, I will probably sell them, so I hold onto them for awhile, but eventually I will probably end up selling them off at some point, so I don't really consider it a long term collection.

I really like collecting demos, I have a close to complete OXM Demo disk collection, along with hundreds of other various demos.

Like Gideon, my focus has changed.
Like him, three years ago I was buying new systems (Sharp Twin, x68000, and Mega Drive systems, to name a few). My focus is different now.
Right now I want "top" imports I want (only good games), cheap games for U.S. systems (that should also be good; I don't have money to just be buying games at random), and oddities, like Gideon said.
I don't like buying dupes of the same game if one version is worse (instead of different) than another. Buying different versions of Castlevania and Contra is always okay, because those are a few of my favorite series. But I don't do the mindless variant hoarding game anymore.
I try not to buy anything too strange (a while back I was looking at a mockup of an unpublished ad for Riven @_@ - too bad the auction picture wasn't too good. I'd spring for a copy of "From Myst to Riven" though). I like:
a.) Flyers (game/arcade) - small, fit into a binder, don't have to worry about fading or spitting on them because you don't hang them.
b.) Soundtracks - always fun to hear a new version of a good song. There are oodles of soundtracks I'd like to get, in fact soundtracks are more on my mind than games themselves, at the moment.
c.) Books/magazines/guides/media. I've gotten all the guides I can afford for a while, and nobody's offering the ones I want at the moment. This is one of my favorite collecting areas because I love information and trivia.
That's really about it. I'm not a big fan of kitschy garbage like plushies (well, those are cute), and certainly not stuff like pencils, Super Mario 64 Cameras (WHAT WAS I THINKING?? :eek 2: )
That said, it's all about the games when you get right down to it. I'm having more fun now that I've placed more emphasis on actually playing and doing other stuff, and less on watching eBay. :D

I like collecting systems that I heard about as a kid but never seen, like the Jaguar. But also, I want a complete SNES collection (one day) so I guess both, but I voted sytems.
