I got this PS2 from a friend because he said it wouldnt work. I plugged it in and it seemed to power on fine. I put in a disc and it showed "Disc Loading" for one second then went off. I don't think I heard the disc spinning. So just now I took it apart and made sure all the cables coming from the CD drive were secure and then put it back together. Tried loading a disc again and the same thing happened. Is the CD drive itself shot? How much would it be for another CD drive?

You just need a new laser. Take the PS2 apart and remove the 4-6 screws on the DVD tray. Then remove the laser and find the number off the bottom of the Laser and buy a replacement off Ebay. $30-$50.

If the laser was bad, you would most likely get a disc read error. Is the model of the scph-5000x? (x = any number). If it is, it might have a busted LA chip. That chip controls the function of the optical drive. If possible, try to find a working optical unit and plug it in. There are two main variants of the laser so make sure they look the same.
