View Full Version : Games compatible with Saturn 3d controller

I bought a 3d controller for use with NiGHTS, and I was wondering what games it was compatible with besides NiGHTS, if any. I had no luck with Google.
I was also considering getting one of them memory cards for the Saturn, but they are so expensive, and I don't know how much they hold compared to the internal memory.

Manx TT, Daytona CCE & Sega Touring Car all use it to excellent effect. Touring Car is almost unplayable without it. Manx TT is truly sublime with analog control. Virtual On also definitely works with the stick.
I'm sure someone will post a list, but there have to be a bunch of others. Almost every first party title released after NiGHTS works wih it.

I think Sonic R is supposed to be designed for this, never tried it though.

Looking at that list, I can't believe I forgot Panzer Dragoon Saga. Elevates an already incredibe experience.

You can use a lot of games with the 3d control pad, Sega Rally and the first two Panzers work, just not well.

The NiGHTS pad was designed to be compatible with the Saturn racing wheel, which had come out at the system's launch. In my experience every racing game on the system supports the steering wheel (except VR: Virtua Racing, but that's should be no surprise since that game is disappointing in every way possible) and so, by extension, they all work with the NiGHTS controller, too.
Unfortunately, the original Saturn racing wheel didn't have any kind of analog braking or acceleration and so even though the triggers on the NiGHTS pad are analog none of the racing games on the Saturn I've played take advantage of them as such since they're really supporting the racing wheel not the NiGHTS pad, this even includes the racers that came out *AFTER* NiGHTS.
Also, are you sure about Panzer Dragoon 1, crazyjacksa? I don't think I ever tried it, but it seems unlikely since the game came out so long before NiGHTS and definitely wouldn't have had support for the steering wheel since a wheel only has one axis. Panzer Dragoon Zwei does work, though, and is really way better with analog control, in my opinion.

Sweaer Fish: It works. Not well. In fact I'd say it was nearly unplayable, but if you move the analog stick on the 3D pad, your little dragon buddy moves in the game.

I recall Radiant Silvergun supports it as well, though why you'd want to play either that or Soukyugurentai with an analog stick instead of a dpad (or digital stick!) is beyond me :(
...ok, so I did it and liked it. Sue me, I didn't know any better

Yes! It sounds silly saying it now, but I remember that Manx TT was the first time I really understood the difference analog control could make for racing games, because it was executed so well. I think should get that game out soon. . .

I beleive Panzer Dragoon Saga and Burning Rangers are "supposed" to support analog control. It does have the 3D control support lable on the back of the packaging. If it really works or is effective, I have never tried. Sonic R also has the 3D mark as well.

In was wondering this the other nights myself! Thanks for posting :)
One thing I've found, and was particularly surprised about, is that Sonic Jam supports the analog pad not only in the 3D game world, but also in the 2D Genesis ports. It doesn't offer any sort of 3D input, and basically works as a D-pad, but hey, it's still neat :)
I thought for sure they'd just disable the analog stick.

If you use the NiGHTS pad on the original Daytona USA, it'll think the steering wheel's plugged in, but otherwise it works pretty well. Also, surprisingly enough it works with the first Clockwork Knight! Also as I think someone mentioned before, it works with Panzer Dragoon (I've tested it with PDZ2 (there's even an ad for an analog joystick on the back of the manual); but I don't remember if it works with PD1.)

I'm still missing Daytona CCE Netlink & Hibut i'm sure it probably supports 3d controller and steering wheel so you could add it to those list.
The remaining codes are pretty inaccurate (with the exception of the multi-tap(T), netlink(X), directlink(D)), such as mouse, keyboard, ram cart, floppy drive, virtua stick? (a). There also isnt a code for the mission flight stick that I can tell. Some of those code don't apply to the US region and are left over from their japanese counterparts.

It must be that the game supported the Mission Stick (which I had totally forgotten about until Scott21 mentioned it in his post) and the NiGHTS pad has similar analog signals, but probably not identical threshholds or something which is why it doesn't control well.
But Clockwork Knights? Why would that be Mission Stick compatible? Weird.

Daytona CCE Netlink & Hibut i'm should be Daytona CCE Netlink but i'm sure...
I don't think any Saturn controllers work with Sonic R. That game is almost unplayable. :P

Damn, I'd already added Hibut to my list of Saturn games to pick up.
Oh, and Sonic R is an absolutely phenomenal game. One of my favorites on the system. People who put it down just haven't played it enough, I guess, because while it does have a hell of a learning curve before you get the controls down, it is absolutely possible to master them whether you're using digital or analog. And once you have the controls mastered, there's actually an amazing sense of control to the game as you battle it out, "drift" around corners and use the different character's special abilities. The tracks are really well designed, too. Quite a bit better and more interesting than most of the levels in Sonic Adventure, in fact.

I really wanted to like Sonic R. The graphics were terrific and the course design was great, but I could not get a handle on the controls. It seemed like within seconds of a race starting I was veering off into the water hazards or something. Maybe it was because the handling was so different from any other racer I played, and I was expecting something as simple to pick up and play as the Mario Kart games.
It didn't help that I bought the game for like ten bucks when the Saturn was getting clearanced, so I didn't have any motivation to stick with it.

While on this topic I wanted to add my 2 games that DO NOT work with the controller at all, meaning you have to unplug the controller and plug in a non analog controller.
Lemmings 3D - PAL and NTSC (Japanese)
Chaos Control
Those are the only 2 I know that will NOT even play as long as the 3D controller is plugged in.
I would also be interested in any others..
By the way this is a great topic...
I think we have one for the Sega Mouse support as well if I am correct?
