perhaps some sort of sampler, or something that explains Wii functionality (this would go along with the whole non-gamer move).
Also considering the small storage size on the Wii a disc may be necessary to use some of the Wifi Functionality as opposed to storing that information in the system outright.

I believe it updates the firmware as the firmware for initial produced Wii consoles are not updated with the latest software.

I would be surprised if that was the case. Do you have a link?

My guess is that Wii sports will be added to the package via a sticker or something, and this box only has what will be the "standard" things included.

Maybe it's what it ways it is. A start-up disk. There is 512mb of flash memory in there ya know. What would be neat is if this start-up disk somehow sets the region of your system. If that's the case then exploit FTW. :)

The Wii is no thicker than 3 DVD cases, right? Open your hands up like in the picture and that seems quite reasonable

Internet :) I didnt take them myself.
I dont think its the 512mb flash memory. It says disc with a "c" + its a illustrated picture of a CD/DVD.

Yeah, but that box inclues the Wii Remote, nunchuk, sensor bar, AC adapter, AV cable, Wii Sports, console, and the mysterious start up disc!
Oh my.

The picture is probly from the bottom of the box and it looks like it just shows half the length of it. The flap where you open it is always on the middle and on the pic its far to the right.

I heard another theory on a forum that sounds very logical. The disc might be some sort of how-to instructions to use the Wii. Even if its fairly simple they "must" include some sort of instruction to show even the most newbies how to use it. What better way to do this with some interactive stuff? :)

No no no jajaja. The start-up disk as I supposed would install from the disk to the flash memory. Like installing from a CD to a HDD.

That's the most sensible thing I've heard so far. Maybe it also calibrates the sensors (though I'm assuming lots of games would have this feature built-in)?

This is what is had to be. This would allow Nintendo to produce Wiis for months, and then drop a update disc in each console as they continue to work on the OS and firmware before launch.

Maybe it's like the 360's global settings. You calibrate it to a specific Wii controller and all games played with it will have that level of sensitivity, inversion, etc. (since there's a small bit of memory on the controller itself to store some settings).

Well the rumour I heard was that it was for Opera and firmware,
Also Is this a Pal box as it is in various languages?

I'm going to take a guess and say it's a North American box. The three languages are English, French, and Spanish. If it was a Euro box it'd likely have Italian and German on there as well.
