According to this (http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/18/ps3-controllers-play-and-toss/) story on Joystiq the batteries in the PS3's wireless controller can't be replaced once they eventually wear out. You'll just have to throw it away and buy a new one.
Thoughts?

I guess it all comes down to how durable the battery is.

My thoughts on this depend on two things:
- How long the battery lasts
- How much the controller costs
I don't know either of these, to be honest. If the former is really long and the latter is really small...I don't have too much of a problem with it. Otherwise, it's pretty much awful.

oh for crying out loud. Does sony really even want to sell me a PS3? cause they seem to be trying really hard to make me not want one.
if Lair comes out for the 360, it might be a while before I get a PS3.
they should fill their generic, cheap-o controller with candy. that way, when the piece of junk dies, at least you can smash it and get a satisfying result. (the candy)

Dear customer,
Thank you for your inquiry regarding "smashing the PS3 controller to get to the candy". We're sorry to inform you that Viva Pinata is an Xbox 360 exclusive and will not be available on the Playstation 3.
To ensure your continued satisfaction with the Playstation 3, we have decided to fill each of our innovative SIXAXIS controllers with fine candies in addition to the non-replaceable battery pack. The controllers are available individually, or, for a limited time, in special SIXPAX so all your friends can enjoy their sweet goodness.
Sincerely,
Sony Customer Support, Playstation Division

So why isn't anyone complaining about nintendo putting special batteries in Nintendo DS's, GBA SPs, and Game boy micros, Or the fact that sony did the same thing with the PSP? You won't be able to buy replacememnt batteries for them in the future.
If this ends up happening it's no big deal in the end. This move won't switch on the automatic nail in the coffin machine.

After reading the article i asked myself these questions:
1. How long will the batteries last, 1 year, 5 years, 10 years?
2. If this becomes a big problem, as in it being drained fast, wouldnt it be logical to make a new controller where you can replace the batteries? This is no problem.
Luckily i dont look at this as a problem. Im not going to worry for years that i might need to replace the controller. If you look at this as a problem you havnt really experienced what problems really is.

yet another reason why i don't want a PS3.
i know third party controllers usually suck, but it might be time to start looking at them, if somebody comes up with a better design.

Actually, you can easily buy replacement batteries for all those systems (well I'm not positive about the Micro but the others you can for sure). Best Buy even carries several brands of replacement PSP batteries in-store.

I know that you can buy replacement batteries for the nintendo handhelds, I'm just saying that you probably won't be able to 15 Years from now.

The fact that they are designed to come out is the main point, so that once they do stop working you dont have to rip it apart, you have a few screws to take out. It's a shame that the 360 is the only console that has the wireless down the best. A rechargable battery that can be swapped out at any time and charged through the machine. Wii takes normal batteries (bad idea) and well, this is the deal with the PS3 (even worse)

I thought PS3 controller was also chargable. What is this "USB charge cable" then?

All I want to know is... why is SIXAXIS $50... seriously... I could probably buy a used Gamecube for that much...

One of the most irrelovent posts I have seen
We will see what people think of the battery life of the Wii in
12 months time and see if there are any complaints.
Oh and Regarding the $50, can some one tell me how much it costs
in the US to by a wireless 360 controller as well as a battery
pack and charge cable? surely this is your answer?

That might be, but you can also buy 10x 14" TVs for the same price as a good LCD/plasma TV. Doesnt mean that you buy the 14" TVs hehe :)

Sony will be software only in 5 years.

I doubt this'll be a problem during the console's life span, and I imagine long term solutions will present themselves. I don't get what all the fuss is about. Tis hardly an enormous problem , really. More an annoying oversight.
Well, unless controllers start dying after a couple of years. Then I'll be annoyed. $50 seems a lot of money to be paying for a controller (hopefully in the UK we won't end up forking out £50!) if the damn thing is going to give up the ghost after no time at all. Yeah, I'm sure I could plug it in, but for that much money I really do expect wireless goodness. Sony's recent run with laptop batteries is, well, a little worrying.

Whilst this isn't really the place for this - I prefer Sony's price plan to Nintendo's (ee gads!) The whole $40 , then another $20 for a nun-chuck thingy, which you'll only need for some games (like the ones you'll actually want to play!) , just seems like a cunning way of softening the blow to the consumer that they've just spent $60 on a controller. Oh, and let's not forget the extra $20 for a 'classic' controller if you fancy one of those.
I guess I prefer to just pay the $50 and that's that. All this messing about with add ons, and you know you're going to need all of them in the end, just rubs me the wrong way.

I'm sure that it's a different kind of battery but generally how long does your cell phone battery last after being charged and drained over and over before you're forced to buy a new battery (or phone)? Personally my cell phone battery generally lasts about 2 years before they die and I don't use my cell phone hours per day like people will likely play their PS3s.

But the cellphone is always turned on. How is it with PS3 controllers?

And a cellphone uses more power when its used than a controller. The PS3 controller doesnt even have rumble so i cant imagine it using much power.

 Sure, there is absolutly no difference between a rechargable battery that can't be replaced and one that can. pfft
I think I have solved the riddle. There is no way to look at the battery because with recent events people will be looking to see if the battery was made by Sony and if it is they will promptly set their house ablaze and blame it on Sony. Now their house will just burn down and they will perish... never able to gaze upon their Sixaxis battery, forever. *tear* *sniffle*
Friends don't let friends buy a PS3. LOL
As far as the Wiimote batteries are concerned, I was taken aback when I heard that you'll be using regular batteries for it. Don't bother me much. I have a recharge station and a bunch of rechargeable batteries for remotes, flashlights and such. I also use it for my Neo Geo Pocket, won't be a big deal to buy a few more batteries. At least I can pop em out and charge them. Zing! :D

As far as the Wiimote batteries are concerned, I was taken aback when I heard that you'll be using regular batteries for it. I was certain they would have went with the GBASP or DS type batteries. Maybe they opted out of that to save people a few bucks. I don't know, though it don't bother me that much. Lets go back to the Game Gear days where we have to use 6 hours that gets drained fucking fast! :-P
Seriously, why do people see this as a huge problem? No one here knows how long the battery will last, if its eventualy replaceable eventho Sony say it isnt (always a way around it) or that Sony releases a new designed controller where you can easily change the battery. Waste of energy to be sad/angry/upset about this now, wait until you actually experience eventualy problems.

this most likely will not be a problem for most users
it is highly possible that a new version controler will come out that will have a user accessable batt.
certainly not a problem for people that like to tinker
mabey this time around sony will make a console that will last - so they need an alternative product to sell that dies often - answer - the controller
there will be third party controlers that will have replaceable batts
in the future - there will be a way to power your controller - just check the Knowledge Base in a few years

Yeah, there is a distinct lack of the word "free" anywhere there.
