I was in a pawn shop earlier today and they had a Sega brand wireless infra red controller (both the controller and the infra red receiver) for $10 (Cdn).
Are these worth it? This isn't really a price check, I'm wondering more are they worth using?
I've tried infra red NES controllers and they sucked. They totally screwed up if you moved the controller slightly. Are the Genesis ones the same way?
Could you use them reliably?

I'm just adding - here's the link in the online rarity guide for the controllers - not much info, but here's the link nonetheless

I have the official ones, the receiver base is a bitch to find.
If they are the official six-button infrared pads, get'em. They work quite well, and they're hard to track down.

Are the infrared pads the same ones that did not actually have a d-pad but it was like touch triggered or something instead. Do you have any pictures of these controllers?

This is it right here:

As you can see, its the official Sega one, with a full d-pad. The ones you're thinking of have a yellow d-pad type area don't they?
GrayFox, how are they on batteries? Do you find them responsive?
The only other experience I've had with wirelss controllers were on NES (uggh) and the wavebird, which I love.
I didn't realize these were rare, I may pick it up anyway, just to have. It's no more useless than my sega saturn keyboard

The controller with the yellow D-pad was called the Turbo Touch. I still have one for the SNES. The only good thing about them was that it was easier to do some of the special moves for Street Fighter type games.
I got MegaDrive II remote, also official I believe:

I bought the pad and receiver. It works great! Just as well as a wavebird provided you're aiming it in the general area of the genesis. I'm really happy with my purchase :D
Is there any way to turn the controller off though? So it doesn't waste battery power?

Damn I have never seen one of these do they work at all cuz I might have to find one. The cords for genesis's are just not cutting it they are way to short.

Infared is like your TV remote control, it doesn't use any power until a button is pressed.

Okay cool. I thought it'd be like the wavebird where you actually have to turn it off. Thanks :)

I'd be very curious for an update after some extended use of the wireless controllers. Mainly in the realm of how long you get out of it, prior to changing batteries.
Always did wanna pick these up, but my Genesis gets lots of use still surprisingly. A nice wireless set that manages to run a long time before changes, would be a godsend.

You could always just run NiMH rechargables and not have to worry about it though :) Unfortunately, I usually don't use my Genesis all that frequently, so I'm probably not in a position to properly test it.
I'm surprised how little information there is on the internet about this controller.

Hmmm, I just thought of something.
Could I use the Infra Red gamepads as gamepads for the Master System? What about Atari systems?
I took my Master System out of storage earlier today (just to nad its AC adapter for my Sega CD), and quickly tried fitting the infrared receiver into the controller ports and it fit perfectly. I didn't bother hooking it up though to see if it would actually work.
We reviewed these for my site a while back.

I'm still looking for a set.
Maybe it's time to try mine out too

I just tryed it last night with the 7800 and it does work...but you need the 4-Player Sega(whatever they call it)

Is that just so the controller ports line up properly?
I'm really excited about this. Using this controller allows you wireless freedom on a whole bunch of 9 pin based systems! :D :D :D

Wow thats great! I'll have to pick up a 4 player adapter.
I assume this'll work with the 2600 too. What other 9 pin systems could we use this with?

i have official and 3rd party - and never had a problem with them and they worked just as good as the wired ones
i never had any problems with any IR controlers for any system. But it seems that others around here dont like them.

My Genesis 6-Button Wireless will work on my 2600/7800, But not the F-16 Sentai..Why is that

I have two 9 pin extension cables attached from my 2600 to the receiver... they work great. I've also used them on the C64, SMS & 7800.
FYI... Another great wireless option for all 5 systems is the freedom stick.
http://www.nesplayer.com/database/accessories/freedomstick.htm
It came with two sets of cables. One for the NES, one was 9-pin for the Genesis, but works with 2600, 7800, SMS and C64...

Sorry, I was wrong, the Freedom Stick only has 2 buttons and was designed for use with the 2600, although it works with the SMS, 7800 and C64 (and the NES if you switch the cables)

I tried the wirelss controllers in a Master System, for some reason its behaving as if I'm always pushing down LEFT. Anyone else gotten this to work properly?

There are a few SMS games that do not like Sega Genesis controllers, even the original 3-button kind. Wonderboy in Monsterland is one of them.

Weird.
I tried it on Alein Syndrome and it didn't. I'll have to try it again some other time.
