I just got an Intel iMac this week, so this is the first time in my life that I've had a chance to really sit down and play some PC games. I'd really like to get into stuff like Battlefield 2 and Unreal Tournament, but I have no idea of what kind of controller to use. I know most games like these use just a keyboard and a mouse to play, but don't people use joysticks too? If so, what kind?

Was also looking for a nice control pad that I could use for MAME and general PC gaming. Any suggestions?

Keyboard and mouse is the only way to play FPS on PC, that would say, if you want to have a chance to win :) Joystick can be used in games like BF2, but "only" for planes and helicopters.

It's entirely possible to play those games with a pad, but I recommend using the pad for older FPS games that don't require looking up or down. The mouse is much more precise in those games. ;)

I use a Saitek rumble PS2 clone pad. It works well and it's USB so it should work on Macs too. ;D

Joysticks are only for flight simulators and the like.

Gamepads are best for platformers and emulators, and crappy for everything else.

The mouse + keyboard is ideal for FPS games. As has been said, you will get schooled if you use your gamepad vs. people using a mouse on the PC. It is simply a superior form of first-person control - way more accurate and way quicker.

Would be funny to see someone playing a RTS with a joystick. LOL

Ditto for the mouse and keyboard for FPS.

For other stuff I just use my PSX pad with one of those USB adapters. They work really well. Or substitute whatever pad you prefer (Saturn, Xbox, etc.)

QFT. Nothing quite like using a sniper rifle that way. When I first got Halo for the PC, it took a little adjusting from playing the XBox version with my friends for years, but once I got the controls down on the PC, I couldn't even play the XBox version anymore.

Keep practicing with the 'ol clicker and WSAD keys. You'll be hard pressed to play an FPS on a console again. ;)
