I was wondering, do any of you guys have any games, (SNES, Genesis or earlier) that can cheer you up when you need a quick pick me up.

There are times when I need something to do to get my mind off things.

Thanks in advance

Psycho Pinball on the MD/G always brings a smile to my face. :) Always got a fondness for stuff like Toejam & Earl, James Pond and of course the Sonics too.

Something with a fast pace, high kill count and little thinking usually gets me moving in the right direction again. I'd pick up Contra or Smash T.V. or a beat em up like Final Fight or Streets of Rage 2.

I wouldn't say cheer me up but rather help me relax

sidmeyer games - like civilization, alpha centuri, pirates , etc.
Sim City games
Dune (the original one - it was ported to sega cd)

most games are good for that though -- as long as they are not agrivating

But if i rearanged the question to If i could only pick one for the purpose you asked about - it would probblay be one of the ones i listed

For me, it's really running through a long game in some kind of God mode. When I play a game, I am challenged and if I'm feeling down, I'd prefer not to deal with the highs and lows that come with challenge. So, I opt for something kind of in-the-middle with an occasional high after discovering something new.

For instance: Quake in God Mode with the gravity turned down is always a little fun.

The Sims 2 Nightlife always cheers me up, especially when my character reaches a goal he sets for himself. It also helps when he goes on a perfect date.

In other words, the character I made in game can have a successful date followed by woo-hoo, and cheer me up to offset my sad excuse of a love life.

The Lion King on SNES always cheers me up and makes me relax. I guess it reminds me of simpler times... my childhood to be exact... even though I was 16 when Lion King was in theaters. Oh well... whatever the reason, I find the game relaxing with its colorful graphics and cheery (for the most part) music.

I love jet set(grind) radio, but when I am feeling down, I pop in jet set radio future, because it is way easier than the original, so there is not as much of a challenge (when you are feeling low, there is no need to push your mind), plus the game is colorful.

For Cheering up I would have to say just hearing the music from certain games make me happy

The Opening of Zelda 2
Flying Battery Zone from Sonic and Knuckles
Music from the End of Super Mario 2

Resident Evil: directors cut on PSX/PSone usually cheers me up.

RE1 reminds me of better days when me and my ex-best friend played it everynight for hours on end after its release.

I also like the "save room" music and sometimes just let it play while I try zone out the stress of life that and the original Streetfighter 2 stage music especially Blankas stage can at the very least lift my spirits a little.

I would say Metroid on NES IF I still had an original NES system to play it on.

as for newer games BLACK on PS2 is a great stress reliever for me

When I need chearing up, I play a game thats within my reach.
Most of the times its on my PC. So most likely I play Age of Empires 2 or I play a couple of games of Arkanoid.

A couple good matches with WCW/NWO Revenge on N64 often does the trick, particularly with other players joining in.

I'm surprised that no one else has mentioned good ol' Super Mario Bros. This is the game I come to when I want something simple to pick me up. It's probably some combination of nostalgia, the bright colors and music and maybe even the god-mode feeling that someone else mentioned (at this point, I could beat the game indefinitely on a single life without using warp zones, so I might as well have some sort of god-mode turned on).

I recently made up a ROM of all the NES Mario games including all the brilliant hacks of SMB1 together with the NES emulator for the DS, so now I have a bottomless cup of Super Mario Bros with me all the time. It's all I've ever wanted in a portable. I put Nintendo and Tengen's Tetris versions in there, too, which makes perfection sublime.

Ah, Mario and Tetris...

The title screen of Kid Icarus, Zelda, or Metroid. Bionic Commando. Blaster Master. Streets of Rage 2 and 3. Double Dragon 2 and 3 (NES).

PC Games--Thief, Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike.

Honestly any Nintendo NES first party game never fails to put a smile on my face. I don't what it is, maybe it's the music of the games. I love the catchy Excitebike Tune, also can't forget the numerous ones from Super Mario Bros 3.

But then yet again when ever I sit down with these games I tend to not be able to stop playing.

Castlevania III never fails me either.

I have a hand full of games that cheer me up when I'm feeling blue...

-Super Mario World

The bright colors, the cheerful music, the infinite replay value and nostalgia. All come together to make a great game to change the mood and put a smile on my face. :)

-Donkey Kong Country 2

Mainly for the same reasons as above. I could listen to the music in DKC2 forever.

-Twisted Metal 2

After a hard day at work, nothing beats blowing everything to hell with the cheat codes on, and a strong sense of nostalgia to add to the game. :D

-Final Fantasy VII

Everything about this game, it just has an "atmosphere" to it that really lightens me up and makes me forget about problems of life.

-Shenmue

It's the best game of all time(In My Opinion), so it's obvious to say I love this game no matter how many times I play it.

As far as games with a cheerful atmosphere, nothing makes me happier than the Wonder Project J series, TwinBee series, Getter Love, and Tail Concerto.

But for games that put me in a good mood without actually being very cutesy or colorful, I love Dragon Spirit and Castlevania 4.

And there's always tri-Ace's games, but those can be kind of somber and more challenging than I'd like if I'm feeling down, although Radiata Stories is quite upbeat.

A good game of Parodius never fails to get me giggling, even if it is as hard as Gradius, also Gradius is an excellent stress reliever for me as I forget the world around me when I start playing that series.

Smash TV is indeed good, mowing down tons of guys, and having a nutty announcer telling you "Good luck, you'll need it" is just what the doctor ordered.

I agree with the series but I stick with Burnout 3. I've pretty much finished with the World Tour events. I just put on the single player Road Rage races and set the courses to random. I'm at 7,350 take downs.

Within seconds of turning the power on - depending on the kind of day I'm having - Yoshi's Story will either have me giggling and clapping like a little girl who got a pink Barbie Ferrari for Christmas, or shuddering with a sort of fear that only our ancestors trembling before the wrath of their gods would understand.

Super Mario World (SNES) - there is just something cheery about tha colourful world.

Daze Before Christmas (SNES) - Christmas was always the happiest time in my childhood and that game brings back that nice cozy feeling. Love that game!

Tecmo Super Bowl (NES)

but to be even more specific if I needed to cheer myself up I would play with Barry Sanders and the Detroit Lions. Like other people mentioned the god feeling and running up a few hundred yards in a game can do that. just need to make that first turn then its all zigs and zags the rest of the way haha oh I love that game

For playing it would be Shadowrun for the Genesis. I love just hacking through the various computer systems and stealing data.

If I'm just laying around the house I sometimes turn on my Master System store demo unit and let it cycle through the intros of all the games. Just listening to the various music works for me.

A couple good matches with WCW/NWO Revenge on N64 often does the trick, particularly with other players joining in.

Agreed. Hey you can always pick one of the characters like Buff Bagwell who has that permanent "crap eating" grin on his face ala "The King" from Burger King if you need extra cheering up! LOL

Wrestlemania 2000 is my personal favorite from this series for a quick mood "pick-up". I have a whole roster of custom made wrestlers in that one, and it had the quickest 4-player action.

A quick game of a 2D fighter like SNK vs Capcom 2 works for me too.
