I'm going to be purchasing some MVS games off of E-Bay and there is this one guy who has tons of them for sale at good prices right now (his user name is bbu97159656tcy on ebay). The only thing is that I'm pretty sure that MVS games are pretty easy to reproduce and I was wondering if there was any way to tell if they are original or repos. Thanks in advance for any info.

There is a HUGE thread on this guy at NeoGeo.com:

He's not a scam artist, but he does seem to be an asshole and you never know quite what you are going to get. If you get a boot, I wouldn't expect an easy resolution process.

Yeah, I guess it looks like i may have done more research on the guy, but so far he's been alright and answered all of my questions. I'll post it if he screws me or anything.

Dude, did you actually read that thread? And if so, you still want to buy from this jack off?

To the best of my knowledge, there's no way to tell if you got a boot until you get it in your hands and open it up. And even then, you need a good eye for suspicious soldering and such.

that sucks cause i already did a buy it now for one of his samurai showdown 2 MVS carts. It costs $23 so I guess as long as I get it and as long as it works I'll be ok with it. I have a feeling it is going to be a bootleg though, which would explain the lower prices on everything he's got.

Nah, I don't think all is lost. SamSho 2 isn't a very rare cart, that's what I'd expect to pay for it. I don't know if anyone would bother producing boots of such a mass produced cart, but I could be wrong.

You're right, it's not uncommon at all for SS2 to go for that little.
Sad thing is the once super common Fatal Fury 3 was used as a sacrifice cartridge for bootlegs for so long that now...

If the carts are in less than good shape, then I find it difficult to have an idea if I am getting a legit cart. However, if I am looking at a cart in nice shape, I have found that I can often tell alot about the cart by just looking at the label and cart. Of course, if there is a reproduction label or cart, you can't be guranteed an original. There is a standard texture to nearly all MVS carts, except for a few recent SNKPlaymore ones. There are also easy patterns to spot in the labels, and you can compare them to the ones pictured at neo-geo.com.
If you are worried about getting bootlegs, I would start off by trying to get something verified original by someone on these forums, or the neo-geo.com forums. Once you get more experience, you should have an easier time judging what you are looking at. One thing to keep in mind is that ebay is littered with bootlegs. Typically, if a seller has a ton of carts, there are bound to be bootlegs mixed in.
I would say take a look around the neo-geo forums, as there is a ton of info there regarding what you are talking about.
