View Full Version : Were you disappointed by the scaling enemies in TMNT (SNES)?

I wish there was a more concise way to describe this topic.

I got out TMNT: Turtles in Time the other day, and played it for a few minutes just to kill time. That was long enough to remind me of what a letdown the "throwing the enemies toward the screen" effect was for me, way back when (92?).

Simply put, I had seen smooth Mode 7 effects on the SNES, and then when TMNT was in development, I would see pictures in EGM of big, blocky enemies (a telltale sign of "Mode 7") being thrown toward you. I figured this would look really cool in motion, ala Bowser flying toward you in Super Mario World. Then the reviews came out, and the scaling enemies effect was mentioned as being a high point.

Then the game came out, and was on a demo unit at Toys R Us. I started playing, and by accident managed to throw an enemy towards the screen. And it was incredibly choppy! I later understood why this was (no hardware sprite scaling), but at the time I thought it was really disappointing to actually see in motion. Kind of like Cobra Command for Sega CD...

Anyway, did anyone else feel the effect was a letdown from what they had expected, based on the pictures in the magazines?

I remember being really impressed with the effect. I thought it was neat :)

God I loved that game.

I was disappointed too... having played the arcade version of Turtles in Time before playing the SNES one. I was used to the smooth motion of the foot soldiers gliding toward the screen. Bummer of an effect on the SNES tho...

Oh well... it didn't bother me that much. I still played the crap outta that game... and still love it to this day. In fact, I think the SNES version is actually better than its arcade counterpart... mostly due to sound effects. The SNES version seems to have much harder hits when performing combos on the foot soldiers.

I'm just happy it's in there. I played the game multiplayer with Bloodreign over ZSnes a while ago, and many enemies did fly!

I'm just let down we never got an arcade perfect home port of this game.

And no, that version on the newer Ninja Turtles game doesn't count.

The SNES version will continue to be the best version.

Besides being one of the greatest beat-em-ups of all time and arguably a top 10 snes game, TMNT:TIT was off the hook! Throwing the enemies at the screen was a major beat-em-up innovation for the snes (when games like final fight and rival turf mastered the monotany of "punch, punch, die" games) I agree that Turtles In Time for the arcade was one of the best, and that it would have been nice to see such a clean game transferred exactly to the console. I can also agree that it wasn't a major hitch in the game, which is still a heavily played game in my collection.
Plus, the first showdown with Shredder when throwing the enemies is a must is still one of the coolest boss fights in SNES history. nuff said.

Ditto.

My biggest disappointment with it was the lack of 4P mode. If it had one, oh man it might be the best beat em up ever... at least on consoles and certainly on the SNES
