I suspect the rom for nectaris is identical to M Madness. Both regions should be on the same card.

Is there a way (key combo) to put Nectaris into "english mode"?

Why would you suspect that they're identical? (they're not)

Same game though. But definitely not on the same card :P

One is english, the other is Jap.

Maybe I am confusing it with some Genesis/Megadrive games with Japanese and English modes together on the same cart.

I thought Nectaris was made while the NEC TG16 was already in production. To save time and money, they could have combined the regional variants and detected the region to determine which version to run.

For the love of god, someone please correct me if I'm wrong because this is how I understand it:

The US and JPN HuCards have their pins in opposite order from each other as a simple form of region protection. This in turn led to some games getting byteswapped when dumped and led people to believe that the games were "encrypted" because they wouldn't work in emulators. Or something. I'm a little shakey on how that all boiled down.

I believe that was the only region protection/detection on the system (but again, please correct me if I'm wrong).

Your post did have me go compare dumps of Nectaris and Military Madness just to be safe, and they are quite different (and they even compress quite differently using the same settings). :)
