I don't buy any import games but I was thinking of buying Double Dragon for Playstation, which didn't seem to get a US release. I know it is a tournament fighter, taken from a Neo Geo game. My question would be: Is the game halfway fun and does it usually come at a reasonable price?

If it's based on the Neo Geo fighter, avoid it at all costs!

i think it takes a dip in quality, but is basically the same.

I haven't played it myself, but I haven't heard much good said about it. As for price, there are two used complete copies on Yahoo Japan right now - one for 2380 and one for 2800 Yen. On eBay, the price is around $34 for used and $45 for sealed.

You have questions. MAME has answers (well, mostly, since it's possible the port would be slightly worse playing than the cartridge).

Thanks for the tips. I'll still look into getting this one. I'm pretty sure I own at least one of each original Playstation model, from the original launch version up through the revisions (not including the PSOne). I assume the launch model would be the easiest way to play the game? I won't ever own a Neo Geo, so it has to be on Playstation.

Double Dragon is a very, very good game actually on the Neo Geo.
psx translation unfortunately lacks in several departments(graphics, animation, load times).
but if you want to give it a try, it's not as teribble as one could think.

What a frightening thought. The Neo game is possibly my least favorite game on the system.

I would buy it just because it's Double Dragon!!
I have a cd-r backup of it somewhere.
It's nice, but under the quality of the NEO-GEO version

Honestly, the PS version sucks. I've never played the Neo Geo version but it can't be this bad.

I didn't realize this existed on the Playstation - but being a double dragon fan I tried this out at a local retro arcade where the guy has a mame machine setup and lets just say soon as the start menu came up I knew inserting my quarter was a bad decision

I have this game, and I must say that it's worlds better than The Shadow Falls, which is, of course, the 1 on 1 fighter for SNES, Genesis and Jaguar. You can tweak the sizes of the characters as well, which you can't do in the Neo-Geo version, but only 7 characters in the game were actually part of the Double Dragon saga. The game claims to be based on the movie, but it's very loosely based on it at best. Abobo has the mohawk from the movie and for a victory stance bulks up to the size he got to after taking the super steroids, but otherwise, there aren't many references to the movie save for the opening sequence. Billy, Jimmy, Marian, Abobo, Burnov, Duke, and Shuko are in the game, and they're all recognizable (though Shuko was only in the movie, and he looks nothing like Robert Patrick). The rest are just filler characters, though Amon looks like most like he could have been in a DD game. He looks like Ranzou to me, but obviously isn't. It's not a bad fighter, though, as we know from the Neo-Geo's track record that good fighters came out for it. Even if it's not one of the best, it's definitely better than The Shadow Falls, I'm sure all of you will agree.

Lol. Thats how I felt once that intro movie started playing. How come people that sell this game never tell you it's based on that horrible ass movie?

Maybe because it's very loosely based on the movie, as I said. The only ones in the game who were even in the movie are Billy, Jimmy, Abobo, Marian, and Shuko, and of those, only Abobo really looks anything like he did in the movie, apart from Billy and Jimmy changing into the blue and red gis when they go super. But yeah, that's less than half the roster that actually appeared in the movie, but Shuko does make for a challenging end boss, I'm sure everyone will agree. A very cheap end boss, but a very challenging one nonetheless.

I don't even remember the character line up because I've been trying to block all traces of this game out of my memories. I know you say it's loosely based on the movie but the intro movie I saw was footage from the movie and thats enough of a connection for me to know that this game was going to be garbage.
