What effect will the Wii's Virtual Console have on classic games? Will it drive the prices of the physical carts up or down? Will it make people sell all their carts because now they can download their favorites, or will it make them more apt to go out an collect, thus driving the prices up?

I doubt it will have any effect at all. Most of the games that will be able to be downloaded will be popular (and some dirt common) games.
Also think of it hsi way. The downloads are like legalized ROMs. I could download those games right now and play them on my computer, only for free.
I'm guessing only the people who are interested in checking out the older games, but don't care enough to actually get the actual consoles and games, will be using the download service.

I think this could cut down the worth of each game on ebay and other online store for tg16 games. Who would buy super star soldier for $20.00 when you can download it cheaper and the same goes with bomberman 93.

Well, you could download it all the time from the net. Only people who never heard of emulation (who would not have bought Super Star Soldier in the first place anyway) will be using this service i guess.
Especially when there is going to be Homebrew Stuff for the Wii. Imagine a SFC/PCE whatever Emulator. Nintendo would go crazy for sure LOL

Thats a good point that i hadnt thought of. I bet the Wii security measures will be cracked very quickly, and it probably wont take long for snes, megadrive and pcengine emulators to be ported over. Given how ps1 and xbox chipping and modding was quite mainstream, i dont see why people wouldnt do the same on wii for emulators.
For years and years these companies didnt care one bit for their classic games, and emulation took off because gamers still did want to play these games. Its a bit late in the day to start charging for the games now.
I reckon the situation could end up being similar to as it is now. People will try out a few game on emulation, then if they like it realise they would enjoy it even more on the real machines, and actually get something tangiable for their money.

I'll bet it'll drive down the prices of some NES/SNES/N64 loose cart games(Mint seal'd stuff will hold value), look what happen'd to the sonic games now that you can just play the sonic collections across 3 platforms.
I know a few people that just gave up the Genny stuff after those release's.

Who!?! They Must Suffer! Genesis Is The Best! Who would sell out their Gennies and Sonics just cause they could buy some Sonic games on newer systems? Personaly, being a hardcore Sonic and Sega fan and Genesis being my most hands-down fave system (first system I remember playing after NES, and the one that I have my greatest childhood memories on) I buy all the Sonic games I can for the Genesis (had all at one point but after moving and stuff my parents lost some of my games and we still havent found them :( ) and I got all the Sonic games on XBOX (my fave current gen system other than DC) and some on the other systems (mega collection on PC and PS2, and Sonic DX on GC).
As far as I care, noting beats the origional, so after getting my MegaCollectionPlus on XB, I played some and went right back to my Genny and GameGear to play the same games again but better.

Have been discussed before as mentioned, but my guess is no. Like.. Super Mario costs $5 @_@ LOL They will only release the most popular games too and in most cases many of them are more expencive like the originals. I also wonder if you are forced to buy the VC controller to play the games.

I think this kinda goes with the whole discusion about paying for downloadable games such as XBLA games. Some people wonder if they want to do it or not because they are worried the hardrive may die or something with the company's network going down and whatnot. Some people talk about wishing they could make physical backups of thier downloadable games. Think of the original carts as your backups that will always be there and always work as long as they are taken good care of. You won't have to worry about anything crashing except for whatever system the cart belongs to.

I think it will have little or no effect on the prices. Almost every game from classic systems are available at this very moment to be downloaded.
The only ones that buy classic games now actually care about having the original cart.
Tell me there isnt something special about owning the original cartridge of your beloved childhood classics.
I never understood collecting roms...

A couple of things:
1) I'm pretty computer savy, but I find it a pain in the arse to have to locate, download, and configure a ROM. And then have to configure my controller to the proper settings.
To have these things ready to play at the press of a button is a big plus for me, so I would guess that for the average consumer, this will be a big deal.
2) Having all of those great games in one place without having to lug out my system each time will be phenomenal. On top of that, my daughter is starting to enjoy the 8-bit classics via the Game Boy Advance and DS, so she is excited to play them on "Daddy's new Nintendo" and the big screen.
3) I would think that it would probably cause prices to drop for most games simply because the people that were buying carts "because they just want to play the games" (especially you guys who just can't comprehend why people buy *sealed* games) will no longer have a need to seek out the carts themselves, pay for shipping and a crappy beat-up copy of a game when they could instead just press a button and be playing it.
