First of all, they're shaped differently from regular DVD cases, so it's going to totally fuck up the flow of the shelf. Then you'll notice that large, clear, tacky looking waste of space at the top of the case. I'm pretty sure that top blu-ray/ps3 clear space is also raised and curved above the rest of the case somewhat, so stacking these cases or putting them on a shelf lined up against each other will result in issues.
The case itself is a clear color instead of black, which looks kind of shitty tbqh.
Look at the PS3 logo on the side, though. Isn't that the shittiest logo you've ever seen? That looks like something I'd whip up in MS Paint. The whole Spider-Man font needs to be ditched.

How can you keep making such Quality posts?
man your getting even more annoying than normal
but Honestly I don't think the cases look that bad, basically like a hd-dvd/blu-ray case which will fit fine in my case anyway not that big of a deal.
It's all good though.

Ah Xizer. It's been too long since i've seen you make an ass out of yourself.
So here are my thoughts
1. It won't fuck up the case flow any more then a Blu-Ray disc or HD-DVD would. The future is in these cases. Also for the bulk of us who are collectors already have horribly fucked shelf lines due to the PSP and DS.
2. Your right the clear plastic top is really bad. I have to even question why it's there since the manual doesn't seem to stick up there and if it did everything would look worse.
3. I'm not sure how far the top sticks out, but ti does appear to and that MAY present a minor problem, hoever i think it's unlikely.
4. The fact that the case is clear is no big deal. The PSP has clear cases and they're ok.
5. The logo does not look like it was whipped up in paint. Beside this is the logo Sony has chosen to go with. The Spiderman font is getting a bit old, but it's also idenifiably PS3. Even the media ads use it.
In short, it's an ugly case, but it's not a shitty case.

The whole Spider-Man font needs to be ditched.
Yeah, hopefully the Spiderman font will be ditched as fast as Sony ditched Polygon Man with the PS1. Unfortunately, that damn Spiderman font is also on the actual consoles themselves, so that is going to make it very difficult for them to scrap that at a later date.

Yes, the Spiderman font needs to go. I don't like the case because it's hard to tell from a distance what it is. The text along the top almost makes you think it's an Xbox game, and of course the whole thing looks too much like a PSP case.
So no, it's not a shitty case, but I think it fails to yell "this case goes with this system." Love them or hate 'em, but the green Xbox cases were genius - there's no mistaking the games for another system's, and they changes stuff enough that the 360 version is easily spotted as well.

after seeing the PS3 cases, I dont think that they look that bad. After all, if PS3 cases looked the same as PS2 cases, people would get confused. I think it was a good choice to make them look different. In five years, it wont matter at all, and many people will have rows of PS3 games. As a collectior of most everything, I like the fact that they are different. It is just my opinion though.

The only thing that creeps me out, is I did not know there was a "FRIENDS" game based on the same god awful show on PS2. @_@ *shivers*
Never show a new gen game with a BAD game to compare.
Ricidulously small cases however. I thought PSP was tiny, but that's nuts.
I agree with Ed, the Spider-man logo is overkill. However, doesn't Sony own the publishing company of the current spider-man movies? If so, I guess they have a right to abuse it.

When PS1 came out they follwed suit with the mainstream cases, PS2 the did the same thing with the DVD cases and now theyre doing the same with the blu ray/hd-dvd cases.
Did you not see that coming?

PS1 actually used long boxes for a while (similar to the saturn). Is wasn't until a few years later did they start to use standard jewel cases.

exactly my point dude, everyone else had the same type longbox(cardboard or plastic) until the jewel cases came out.

Afaik Europe only got the jewelcase size box. Well.. alittle thicker than a normal jewelcase to fit the multi language manual :)

Jewel cases were created long before the long box was created. So this is contrary to your point. They used long boxes to differentiate it from a standard audio cd and pc game cds. The PS2 used dvd cases to differentiate it from PS1 jewel cased games even though early PS2 games were on cd and not dvd. They use different cases so you know its for something else.
It wouldn't be so easy to differentiate between dvd and music cd if they both used jewel cases by just glancing. With the large dvd keep case, its super easy to tell the difference.

So I'm the only one that thinks the red and black PS3 logo on the side of the case looks like an MS Paint creation?

It doesnt look as good as their previous logos, but all of those could also be made in MS Paint without a problem.

i think the cases look like crap. i work at a video rental place and they look like the cheap clear plasic cases we stick everything in. and since i hate work and those cases remind me of work maybe i'm baised on the issue.

They look perfectly fine to me. The quality of the case shouldnt be such a big deal. They're smaller than psp cases even and should have NO PROBLEM fitting on anyones current dvd shelf. Might be trouble on a DVD rack, but thats it.

These PS3 cases look like ass. Laughably amateur graphic design, lame case design. Terrible.

I saw it too, and at first I thought it was some kind of sim game or something, but it looks like it's trivia...I don't know which would be worse. Either way, it sickens me. Anyone responsible for that should be banned from the gaming industry.
To not be completely off-topic, I tend to agree with those who think the plastic tops look cheap, or tacky, or just pointless. I can't think of the advantage of it; but then, I don't have much common sense.
I don't think the ps3 logo on the side is too bad.
Overall, I don't think it's very important, but still, the cases could be better.

Truthfully, that thing sticks out like a sore thumb to me. I hated the fact that Sony kept using the PS1 logo on the PS2 games and I'm glad it isn't making it's triumphant return again, but the red logo part makes it look oddly out of place. It really doesn't look 'next gen' at all.
The rest of the case I can't tell what I think of it yet, but I think that'll grow on me. The Playstation 3 on the front cover along the left hand side looks weird, but it could look good. I would've expected the cases to be a different tint than clear ("smoke" perhaps, or "blue" for the blu ray stuff) but clear is okay.
I hated the Xbox 360 cases when I first saw them, now I think they're pretty cool.

What I really find odd is how Playstation 3 is still written from bottom to top on the front of the inserts. I hated it on PS1 long boxes and I still hate it here.

Hehe it was just a joke. I actually never really liked the DVD case style for games. They are ok of course, but there are something special about games that uses cartboard boxes, like NES and GBA.
jajaja
11-06-2006, 11:36 AM
Oh, and the old bigbox PC games of course :)
I've actually played Friends for PS2. If you're not a fan of the show all is lost (I'm not a fan).
While I agree the PS3 cases look crappy and the system aint so pretty either, at least they're slightly smaller than DVD cases.
There's a possibility that more titles will be displayed at retail which gives "niche" PS3 games a chance...if there are any.

Yep, PS3 cases look like horse shit, even worse than PAL Dreamcast ones.
And WTF is with the region on the bottom of the spine??? I thought PS3 games were going to be region free???
Sony are a bunch of lying dickwads.

Oh, and why is "Playstation 3" showing twice on the front cover?
Do they think we're too stupid to see it on the clear part of the case and we need it scrawled on the side too? (which, btw, is also reading from bottom to top, instead of the uniform and universally expected top to bottom like everything else does and makes it look even untidier)
