Hi All,

A friend of mine has just got xbox live over the weekend, and the points you can buy? can you also win or gain these points? Or do you have to just buy them?, to buy the live stuff etc?

And whats the main difference between, points you buy and the points you win?

I have searched DP, but haven't found anything that really nails down any answers? Also i DONT have live either.

Any quick replies (OR LINKS) would be great.

Cheers!! ;)

There are achievement points that show what you have done in the games. There are 1000 points in each disc based game and 200 from any of the xbox live games avalible. Some are easy to get and others are not.

There are also Xbox Live Points that you use to purchase games/addons/etc. This get charged to either the credit card used for the live account or to the points card that you can purchase in a store.

So you can't win those points to get games/add-ons?, you need to buy those? is that right?

So even though you have your year Subscription you still need to buy the points as well to purchase the extra's (games/add-on's) and from what i gather its well worth it thou!! :-P

thanks again for the reply s1lence

Another thing i should have asked, the points you buy are they universal? could i buy them in the UK, Europe or the States and use them on the UK xbox live?

I don't know if the Microsoft Points are universal, But if you buy a 1 year subscription to Xbox live (360) You get some microsoft points. I think you have to buy the 1 year subsicription in a Brick and mortar store to get the points, though.

To put it in arcade terms - think tokens and tickets. Microsoft points are essentially tokens out can buy. For 20$ you get 1600 MS points - which you can use to buy games from the Xbox Live arcade.

Achievement points are like the tickets you win from games - except you can't redeem them for anything. You just accumulate points as sort of an overall score.

Let me be the first to say, RUN from the achievement points! While you still can! They are highly addictive, and I need more for the sake of having more, even though they do NOTHING! :P

Really though, I'm doing things in games I wouldn't normally do, just because I might get 5, 10, 25 points for doing it. It's not so bad, I can more playtime and enjoyment out of my games heh ;)

Thanks for the added info... that does help alot, the questions i asked were for a friend that has LIVE and an xbox 360. So that will answer alot of his questions.

and..

I have played LIVE a few times, i think i'm gunna have to get it, especially with the XBOX 360 (But for now the original box will keep me going!.. Until Xmas atleast)

I'v always steered clear of LIVE purely for the fact i have a modded xbox, although i buy mainly official games, the odd game i got from friends or markets was a back up.

It was just one of those things really. Although i was told i could switch off the mod chip by holding the reset or the power button for 10 seconds? thou i never got round' to it. O_O

I know this is really old but I could not find anything else related to my question so here it goes...

My internet connection is no where near my xbox so I have to run a very long Cat6 cable down the hall. It's a pain so when I play most games I don't connect to the internet.

So, when I am playing games and not online and I reach achievements, obviously I am not rewarded those points because I'm not online but when I connect to xbox Live at a later time will it update my achievements and reward the points or did I totally miss out on them?

If so, is there a way to reset the saved achievements to replay the game when I am online to get the credit from achievements?

Achievements that you've been accruing on your XBL account will all be transmitted when you log in to XBOX Live. If you have a lot of them you're going to get a long series of dings and report bubbles detailing each one.

Achievements in most cases can't be undone, reset or disassociated from an XBL account.

If you get the achievement you have it for eternity You can never get rid of it. Even if you earned it fraudulently and your score is reset to 0 the achievements are still considered earned.

IIRC, points are location based (ie Canadian points will not work with US accounts) but Live time is universal.

Thank you Frankie and Pork. Your responces were very helpful! I will try to connect to Live when I am home again and see if it updates my achievements.

Yeah, I was thinking that you lose the achievement if they pull your gamerscore or ban you, but you're right, they don't.

Maybe I am misreading this, but the achievement bubbles should be popping up during the game even without being connected to Live. I've only had Live for about a year (maybe less!?) and had no trouble with achievements before that. The only difference I've noticed between achievements earned while connected to Live and those earned while disconnected is that a date will not appear next to the achievement while disconnected. The report bubbles popped up during normal gameplay regardless of connection.

Hmmmmm .... you don't get some kind of visual status report when you re-connect to XBL and it updates your achievements that you earned offline? I thought it did.

My memory might be off, but I thought it was seamless; the points just became part of my gamer tag. I don't recall any notice or bubbles popping up to inform me of my achievements once I was connected to XBL.

I've never had dozens of achievements, but I've logged onto Xbox Live numerous times with 5 or 6 offline achievements earned since I was last online and nothing special happens (Used to be switching cables a lot between the Xbox and Xbox 360 before they pulled the plug, so many of my achievements used to be earned offline when I wouldn't bother plugging in the cable). They just automatically appear on my account with no notice and the achievement bubbles pop up at the time you earned them just like if you were online.

The only difference I've ever seen is what was already mentioned, those achievements don't have the date earned listed when you examine them.

there is also a rewards program similar to how a rewards program works on credit cards..
You do certain things or purchase certain things and you get points in exchange. You accumulate a certain amount of points from this program and then it will reward you those after a term is up. I've had one instance where i got like 400 or something like that points. Which could buy a cheap add on or avatar accessories or a couple indie games or dirt cheap arcade games :D

I don't know if this is true with the 360, but I did notice that everytime I get a new game for the PS3, it updates trophy information with a quick download. I think the same thing happens with 360 titles, but I'm not quite sure. I'd recommend you have your 360 connected to the internet the first time you play a game, if not for the acheivements, at least to get the latest patch or update.

Okay.

I must've been mis-remembering or attributing behavior from a different service that will log achievements online.
