I have been collecting for awhile, and have had some good and bad times in collecting (for some reason about 2 years back, I wanted to buy nothing but cheap sports games, blah!).
I did notice that when I moved out of my parents house, my collection went from about 300 something to about 600 or 700 something in a matter of about 6-8 months. I have been amassing games pretty fast, and I stopped buying crappy sports games (I still buy a few sports games, but not many). Around the beginning of this semester, I thought it would be cool if I hit 1000 games by the time I graduated. For a college student with only a part time job in a kitchen, gaining 200 games is something that would not be easy.
Today I hit 900 games exactly. I think it is a good feat, but I learned something extremely important that some of you warned me about back when I was trying to get nothing but sports games, and that is that I do not care anymore if I hit 1000 by the time I graduate. Don't get me wrong, I am going to try, but if I don't do it, then I will still be happy. I learned that collecting isn't about how many you have, but how much fun you have when you are collecting. I have probably even said that to people on this board, but never really believed it myself.
Collecting is fun, and I would continue doing it and living this lifestyle until I just can't afford it. I still need to think of something cool I should do if I do hit the 1000 mark by the time I graduate (which will be next semester).
Big goal for me, and if I hit it, it will be cool. If not, oh well, but it will be fun to try.
Also since I realized I have 900 games, I am going to take updated pics of my room tonight (plus I have been playing on my computer like crazy since I upgraded the ram and added a 2nd monitor).

Good luck! I had the very same goal, from 900 to 1000, and I gave myself a year to do it. I hit 1000 with more than one game, so I can't really give #1000 to one game heh.
Oh, and I did do it within the year I gave myself :)

This sounds like the climax scene of the best Afer School Special ever.
Do you have feathered hair?
...word is bondage...

Looking forward to seeing the pics.
Good luck with your goal of hitting the big 1000.

begs to be asked: what was your 900th game?
And yeah, this should be fun. And as stress-free as possible. When it becomes too excessive/stressful, that's when burnout easily creeps in.

The next issue you'll face as you head towards 2,000 is where to put everything...
Goo Luck with the last 100. Try ebay, search for sellers selling tons of NES games and offer combined shipping. I bought about 200 NES games this summer for about $500 this way. All cart only, but it's a good way to build a collection. Everything you buy on ebay can later be resold on ebay; so it's almost like an investment.
I forgot what my 1,000 game was and instead started aiming for completing collections (for example - PS1 long box games, or the first 100 PS2 games ever released, or the easy 32x, or Odyssey2).
Working on my Saturn collection now. I think I need less than 50 titles...

There aren't too many sports titles I own and most of which I either got free (Those are my uber common Madden's, NBAs, MLBs, ect) or I purchased because they aren't seen everyday. Examples of those are Football Fury, Baseball Stars, Mutant League Hockey/Football, and so forth. If I did want them however, there is a pawn shop with every freaking year of Madden for the Genesis complete for $1 a pop. I stay clear of them because I feel as though it'd make my GEN collection look tacky. In addition to that I know I'd end up never playing them. LOL
I'm currently hovering in the 800's someplace and am pleased with what I own. Whenever I have a taste in my mouth for a game chances are I either have it or something similar enough to where I'm good to go. However it would be nice to join the 1000's club one day which shouldn't be too long since I've only been collecting for 3 years, so if all goes good I would reach it in another 4-5 months. Unfortunate for me though is that around here times are slowing down. There's fewer games to purchase at the stores overall because I also hunt down duplicates in hopes of replacing a worst conditioned game and reselling. I'm going on a big run this weekend in hopes of some loots, we'll see.
Good luck on hitting that 1000 mark!

I simply like collecting the games. I too would never play the sports titles, but still enjoy finding them in good shape. and since they are so cheap it doesn't hurt to buy them. I find that when I start checking the games off on my lists or in the DP guides that all the checked off sporrts titles narrows down what I need to hunt down; and that it narrows my lists. I could collect the games by page in the DP guide, or by letter. It's my way and it works well enough. I've been picking up all the PS2 and Xbox sports titles lately. They have many at Buy 1 Get 1 Free at the moment. Paid $2 to $3 each afetr all discounts. Buy 2 Get 1 free is supposedly coming on Black Friday or so, which is a good time to raid EB/Gamestop for all their <$5 games...updating my Game Collecotr lists now...

To take real advantage of B2G1 you need to hit the bigger games if you have the time to sit down, beat them and sell them off and possibly break even or profit.
The issue with buying sports games at $1 each, even when complete is that most aren't even worth a dollar, at times barely 10 cents. The additional problem with that is if you do decide at some point to sell off, buyers look at all the sports titles and try to downplay bids because they know they can't sell those later on either. I guess the main problem is that sports gamers 99% of the time are pure cutting edge gamers and don't want to deal with older sports titles, not to mention most likely they played it and now it's inferior to Madden '07 on a 360.
I know that one day I may end up actually buying up all the Madden's that are complete and in the best possible condition but I swear that the most I'll end up playing is to test it. However, it would be interesting to start with the first of the games, play for a few hours then switch out to the next year and compair all the way up to the latest release. Although we already have that information out there on what's improved it gives you something to do with them other than setting afire. :P

Funny about moving out and the collection booming, same thing happened to me. I graduate in December and hopefully will move from being a substitute teacher to becoming a real one and have some cash to spend on games. Kudos on slowing down on the collecting, that has got to be one of the hardest things to do.

I myself am just getting up to the 800s. But I usually don't buy games just to buy them. I buy the ones I know are fun, ones that I know that are worth money, and ones that have some form of history in my life (games I used to rent as a child but never owned). Pretty soon I think I'm going to be buying up a bunch of commons. My Atari 2600 cart collection is getting up there with a few R7s in the mix. My main goal is to complete a USA Saturn collection. I don't care if they are CIB or disk only, I just want to have every game at my disposal. I already have all the high end games except Shining Force 3, Guardian Heroes, and House of the Dead. But those will come towards the end of the collecting. My goal is to get all saturn titles before i stop collecting.
