Ever since snagging those cheap points via the Best Buy deal (thanks again for whoever gave that heads-up) I've been salivating over the next great arcade release, and this looks like it fits the bill!

Now bring on that game the Alien Hominid guys worked on (Castle Crashers?) and I would sell my soul for an XBLA port of the Sega Saturn game Guardian Heroes.

I've never been much of a fan of the arcade version of Contra :( The aspect ratio in particular isn't going to work well for most people (3:4 aspect ratio on a 16:9 tv = POSTAGE STAMP TIME, BABY!), but at least they're having split screen co op.

The NES/Fami versions had better overall level designs and had the difficulty tweaked (though they're still not too hard if you abuse the S weapon!).

While I find the arcade version a tad easy and short, I'm still excited for it.

And I heard via Joystiq (http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/06/contra-storms-xbla-original-titles-to-follow-this-holiday-atar/) that the Konami code works. (!)

The postage stamp has been a factor for most of the XBLA releases, but I'd much rather play a game in its original aspect ratio than have it stretched to fill the screen. Most games skirt around this by having interesting art around the border, and games like Doom let you increase the screen size as much as you like (without ruining the aspect ratio).

The NES version of Contra is the definitive version. It just looks better. The arcade version has this weird color palette that's very cold and rusty. I don't know what they were thinking, but it looks far better on NES. Oh, and the jumping looks far better. The arcade guys just look clumsy.

Also, if you haven't played both versions (and I can't imagine why not, since you should all have MAME and NES emus on your computer), the NES version has longer and better-designed levels. The verticle level over the waterfalls, level three - yeah, I'm talkin' to you!

But, hey, it's great to see arcade Contra on XBLA. Have the emulators been cracked for the 360 yet? I'd just stick with that.

Very cool to see this. Is there a list anywhere online with all of the xbla games?

As short as it is, the arcade version does have some positives. It's nice to finally have a port for a home console too in its original form.

That said, online is BROKEN. It's completely unplayable. On my screen, the other guy had a game over. On his, he was still playing... two stages BEHIND ME. It's like this every time out. At some random point, the game simply stops showing the host the other player, and he/she dies. It's baffling how they let the game go out like this.

Same here. I can make it through the first level and tunnel without dying no problem, but once I hit the bosses I might as well be playing the damn game with my feet.

Damn this game punishes you for using the 30 man code. So I was able to pull off the "under 12 minute" by pretty much dodging everything I could before it could hit.

Only attempt I have left, is trying to finish with 1 credit...

I played this game yesterday (only trial tho). Pretty fun :) How does the live function works? Do you just get tossed into a game where another guy is playing?
