Dav Karraker, senior director of Sony Corp., said that there is a good chance players can download and play Sega Saturn games on PlayStation 3 in future.
-------------------------------------------------
I'm annoyed by this, because Wii/360 should jump on this and not let Sony have Saturn..

The original source is actually Gamasutra's interview with Dave Karraker:
GS: This is a bit of a stretch, but I know there’s a very good Saturn emulator for the PSP [the GiriGiri emulator has been officially licensed for PSP, and was used for Atlus' portable version of Princess Crown]…
DK: Ah, Saturn – that takes me back!
GS: As an ex-Saturn person, do you think there’s any chance of that downloadable content there?
DK: Oh, absolutely! Don’t say that I said you’re going to be able to download Saturn games though. The cool thing about Sony and about the platforms we’re working on is that it does open itself up to allow a lot of downloadable content from other catalogues, and you heard Ken talk about how we could do something like the entire Turbo Grafx 16 catalogue, pulling that over. So that’s what’s possible, but we haven’t announced anything.
GS: I’m an old Saturn fan, so…
DK: Panzer Dragoon, man, that was the game.
Not exactly confirmation. Didn't Sony announce Genesis games, and then had to backtrack? That bit about GiriGiri being used on PSP is interesting though. I hadn't heard that before. I wonder if they used it for other Saturn games that have shown up on PSP like Sakura Taisen 1 & 2, the Megaten game, or Tengai Makyou IV? Or were those actual ports?

No thanks. I can already download and play games on my Saturn. :D

True dat. Much cheaper than a PS3, and no need for SONY to be involved at all.
That quote is the exact opposite of confirmation. Portable code is not the same thing as wholesale emulation.
Even if Sony got behind widescale Saturn emulation, they wouldn't do it for nothing. I would expect them to snag the low-hanging fruit of PC Engine/Tubro Grafx 16 ROMS just like Nintendo, charging for the privilege of emulating 20-year-old side-scrollers.

Ehh, nice to see they're still playing with the Giri Giri code, but it's a shame it's not being used on PC anymore. Not like it matters since SSF is far more compatible and easier to use on the PC-front (well, that and GiriGiri had to be hacked all silly-like to work with games that it weren't hardcoded into it).
That would be pretty nice if they ever did implement something like that on the PS3, though. A whole new generation could be introduced to Saturn games (much like how a lot of people will get their first taste of the TG16 via the Wii).

With that Blue-Ray disc jumbo they should toss whole collections out there, like what those TV plug & play people did awhile back with the NES. If they sold discs with the complete Genesis collection on there that'd be banging, or release volumes from the Saturn. My only problem with that is it won't happen and if it were to who knows what they'd really price it at.

Well. "It COULD happen". Sony talks alot you know. It could happen aswell that I can download PS3 Games to my microwave...
Emulation sucks anyway. Why do I have/collect all those systems? Of course not to play emulated games ...

Can you explain that to everyone here? or was it just a Sony jab
for the sake of having a go at them with no logic involved?

Well they technically could, it wouldn't even remotely be practical because of licensing issues. The way those crummy TV plug and plays got around it was by not bothering with the licensing at all...which is why a lot of them got shut down. :P
The only way anything like that would ever happen is if someone were to crack the copy protection and firmware security and sold off bootlegs.

It's important to keep that sentence in mind though. I mean, it's certainly not out of the realm of possibility, buts its far from definite at this point.
It'd be cool to get some Saturn love on the new systems although I prefer to play Saturn games on Saturn.

I'll be sticking with my Saturn Thank you very much, although it is nice to see the Saturn getting some respect. Really though, how much of a market could there be for old Saturn Games?

Yes, that was a Sony jab, but it was meant in good fun. It was a response to what Sony said about the 360's HD download service. (thread right here (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=94806).) And wasnt a jab at the company itself so much as their current practice of putting down seemingly everything any other company comes up with.
But hey, Saturn games would be a selling point for me a few years down the road, just port over that superb version of KOF '95 :D

The PS3 (and likely XBOX 360) are the only consoles that likely have enough processing power to properly emulate the Saturn. The Saturn was a hardware nightmare from what I have heard, which was one of the reasons that it had very little 3rd party support. I seriously doubt the Wii could handle it.

I concur.
It's like Sega is feeding the beast that killed them.

It won't happen, I can 99.99999% guarantee it.
Making an emulator of one of the toughest, most complex consoles ever released onto PC is hard enough, then making sure it's 100% bug free and compatible would take a long long time, let alone to convert that software to an asymmetrical mess of a system, and then reconfigure the isos into a downloadable and executable format.
It'd be more likely to see them on 360, and me bumping into Heather Graham in my local supermarket and having a threesome with her and Sarah Michelle Gellar is about 50 times more likely than that.
If those "Saturn" games DO show up on PS3, they'll be ports of the PC versions, not the saturn ones...so that means we'll see Virtua Fighter 1 & 2, VF2, Daytona USA, Sega Rally, Virtua Cop 1 & 2, Panzer Dragoon and House of the Dead...but nothing else.
..Did Sega release any other games that were on Saturn to PC?

Good thing the Saturn only had about 3 good games.
And does anyone here actually pay for emulated games on their consoles? I can already emulate anything I want on my Xbox for free.
I think I'll just stick with my Saturn.
