Surfing the net on a C64? Damn this is great news. If you read the rest of the page, there are Vic-20 and Jaguar ports there as well as some others! I gotta try this out!

I think somebody once made a WAP browser for Vic-20, but Contiki beats the pants off of that.

Aw, crap! I wanted to post about that first!
Oh well. At any rate, it's a pretty cool concept, but I don't know if the VIC-20 would be much good for web surfing, even if it's entirely in text. The characters on that machine are huge... you could fill up an entire screen with the words in this post.

I don't have a dial-up service so I have to build the ethernet cart.

You're telling me, if you use the VIC-20 on a 27" TV, you'd have to stand a hundred feet away just to *read* one line. LOL LOLI wouldn't recommend porn sites though, a 20x25 character graphics would look dog ugly.

I'd love a network of classic computers- preferably a wireless network. That's way more than I could ever put together. Still, it would be cool to emulate a hard disk on a computer and get software from a PC hard disk...

Unfortunately, it turned out to be very difficult to fit everything of Contiki one needs to go online inside even a maximum expanded VIC-20, at least using the existing compiler and memory models. I once tried (and I think still is listed as the official maintainer) but failed. Possibly parts of it could be rewritten directly as machine code to save memory, but it would break the compatibility. I'm not sure if Adam, the head programmer, has made any progress during the years.
Theoretically one could use a software 40 column simulating mode to get more text on screen, but it would 1) cost even more memory and 2) lessen the effect of using a desktop OS on VIC-20.
