After so many YEARS of ignoring this game, I finally sat down and finished the very first Final Fantasy tonight on my GBA.

I'm not even that big on RPG's these days...but I was SO determined to finally put the mystery of the original to rest. To find out what was it, that made FINAL FANTASY what it is today.

"It seemed that the cycle of time, was lost forever....but the bravery of the travelers had changed that, to bring peace to the world of light."

As the ending puts it. Yeah, I agree with that statement. Yet is it truly lost forever? The cycle of time that is, because here was a game that was a near DEATH of a company, by naming it's final game, "Final". However, whoever wrote the script and concept for the game, probably felt he wasn't ready to die off from the game industry in that holiday season of 87'.. or probably as some could say, when people work under pressure, they can lay a golden egg pretty quickly.

I felt really good after this. Pretty damn proud of myself, I haven't finished a Final Fantasy game since I played part 4 on PSX (FF Chronicles) back in 2002 I think.

So what's next for MD20XX? Why, the only thing you can do on the GBA version...FINAL FANTASY II! The Fight must go on! :D

Congrats on finishing one of my faves! I've played through FF1 countless times across 3 consoles... wonderful game!

However, good luck getting through FF2. That one's reserved for the hardest of hardcore. I've tried to get into it 2 or 3 times... but just can't. It just ain't fun... and too tedious. But... if you really want to go for it... more power to ya! Just remember to have lotsa patience... something I just don't have.

or you could stick with ff1 and do the old nintendo power challenges - try beating it with 4 white mages :eek 2:

congrats

I barely remember finishing the game on my first NES waaaaay back in the day but I actually got the game new a few months after its release and even then I thought it was something special like Zelda.

Little did I know that the company that made the game was about to go down in flames and was actually Squares savior since it was a very nice package for back then with the map and all I thought "WOW these guys must have TONS of money to include a whole big map and thick instruction manual" LOL

Hey it was a far different time and much more simple time especially in the videogame world.

I was so proud when I beat FF1, I actually videotaped it. This was probably 92 or 93...

I enjoyed FF2 as much as the first. Waiting for FFIII for the DS next week. I've been told it does not matter what order you play them in, but once I heard III was coming out I put IV aside. FFV is out now, and I hear we are waiting for a US release of VI for completeness...

Good stuff...simple is sometimes better.

Would be nice to see them release some more classic FF's on the DS.

So did the Wonderswan/PSX/GBA remakes of FF2 all share the same mechanics as the NES original, or did they clean it up a lot?

You know, like they changed FF1 so that if you targeted an enemy with two characters and the first one killed it, the second character would be intelligent enough to target a different enemy?

FF1 on GBA was a travesty :P

It was so watered down as to be ridiculous. At least in the PS1 version you could choose which changes you wanted to keep.

I always thought that was impossible. Sucicide. "4 White Mages? It'll never work." Yet, I saw an issue of Nintendo Power where 4 people actually did it. :eek 2:

FFI really is a solid RPG. It is one of the few RPGs that I can come back to every now and then because I know I can polish it off at around 20-30 hours. I usually roll with a Fighter, Monk, White Mage and Black Mage.

I actually surfed the net while fighting Omega on the GBA version of FFI. I think it took me 45 mins to kill that sucker.

If you think 4 white mages is a hard challenge, you should see some of the single person challenges. Try beating the game with just a monk/master. :o

Yeah, after the GBA version got me back into the game again, I one day happened upon the gameFAQs message board for the game ( :embarrassed: )... people on there do a lot of interesting challenges. The different single character accomplishments sound tough. There's even a FAQ about how to get the rat's tail and upgrade your party while still staying at level 1, I believe. Anyway, it is almost... almost worth trolling over to the gameFAQs to read some of the interesting variations people have done.

I couldn't even beat FF1 through emulation, it got to the point where there was a fight every step, then I lost the save file via file transfer to my (then) new computer and that was the end of that.

I hate to crash the party, but...

Did you beat the Dawn of Souls version of Final Fantasy? If so... you beat an easy, easy, easy, easy port of a remake (with a few extras). In no way does this even begin to stack up to the towering challenge that the original version of Final Fantasy gave. And, besides, Dawn of Souls came out at the end of 04, so it's not as if you've been putting this off for 16 years.

But, since this is the classic gaming forum, I'll just assume you beat the original through an NES emulator on the GBA. So, in that case, CONGRADULATIONS.

But...

If it was the Dawn of Souls version...

-_-
No biggie.

No remake can substitute for the challenge of the original version.

Oh, the first one's not that hard either. You can make either version easy by grinding up your level early on. There definitely were times in the Dawn of Souls version where it was nigh impossible not to be "over-leveled", but most of the time it was fairly balanced or required some grinding to make things even feasible.

Of course, you are given the perfect grind opportunity with the extra dungeons thrown in, but if you stay out of there you can stay appropriately leveled most of the game.

The Dawn of Souls version also has some bugs fixed from the original, such as the blackbelt actually being better at running away than most, as is stated in the manual. Apparently, the original code was messed up on this count. Other improvements just made the game less annoying, such as the aforementioned smart-targeting feature when the selected opponent was defeated.

I beat the dawn of souls version, I'm a wuss LOL

If it's any consolation though, I also beat all the "Soul of Chaos" bosses, including Omega & Shinryu.

I'm also a dedicated grinder. I was level 12 before I fought Garland that first time, lolz.

Everyone's 99 now, and I've got the Excalibur, Masamune, Ultima Weapon, & a Master, so everyone hits for 4-digit damage every time, even the mages.

Good work with that FF1.

I'm agree about the remake thing, FF1 original for NES I think it's a little bit more harder and challenging than other ports.
I've finished FF1 on the real console, and I was so tired of it after that I never touch the game again.
4 whites mages? Are u crazy? :eek 2:

I beat Final Fantasy on NES for the first time the summer before last, and, honestly, I found it rather tedious and tiresome to complete. Then this past summer I played Final Fantasy II on Origins, and I had a much better time (although still not especially remarkable). I have to wonder how I'd feel about Final Fantasy II if I had played it on NES like the original, though.

That is damn inspiring! I own every FF, some in multiple forms, but I have never completed an FF that was not contemporary when I first played it (starting with VI)

I remember when I finished FF1, I thnk it was 1993 or thereabouts. I remember thinking how great it felt that I didn't have to play it anymore! LOL

To tell the truth, I was spoiled by FF II and FF III for SNES, so I didn't enjoy it that much. But I felt it was somthing I had to do, so I kept on truckin' until Chaos was toast. I do feel good about it. I had finished Dragon Warrior 1 a short time before then.
