I got a PSP on launch day and I have yet to be disappointed. At first there wasn't much for games, but now there are plenty of them to go around. And sometimes you can pop into a circuit city sale or a sears clearance sale and pick up some game for under $10. I use it only for the games available and UMD movies. I don't really get into the online stuff or the emulation, but if you are into that stuff, its worth it. If you like RPGs, Valkyrie Profile is worth it alone (seeing how the PS1 version of VP goes for over $100 as it is). You also have two GTA games, some rehashed classic games, and addictive puzzle games. Picture quality is outstanding. Plus if you are planning on getting a PS3 some day, there will be connectivity features that will make it that much more fun. So I'd say go for it.

After having it since launch, I would say only if you already have a DS. As a game machine, it is decidedly average at best with a relatively meager library of good software. The ghosting on the LCD is much worse than people like to indicate and the pad simply sucks. For the price it is not what it was cracked up to be. Mine has spent more time as a paperweight than as a game machine.

I honestly don't care for mine TOO much. I bought mine at launch and am able to install emulators and stuff so that kinda makes it worth it. I am a HUGE fan of mega man mavrick hunter X for it. Its such a great remake. Capcom put a bunch of remakes out for it and thats kinda what I am sticking too. One thing that I am REALLY looking foward to is the new Metal Gear game coming out. I am sure I will love my PSP then. THe DS i would have to say is overall better though. There are less ports.

yeah I agree as a game machine the DS is better but over all, PSP is a better multimedia device. And the PS3 connectivity paves the way for so many innovative things that could be made. Now its just whether or not they will actually make use of the connectivity features. Being able to play UMDs through the PS3 and onto the TV screen would move more units and UMDs.

I was a launch adopter and I'm pleased with mine.
Granted, I use mine more now for emulation, but there are a good number of games out there for it. It's not going to be a tremendously diverse library like the DS, but I think that the system does well with what it has.
If I had a choice between the DS and PSP, I'd go for the DS simply because of the stellar games they've been dishing out. If you want something you can homebrew on, I'd go for the PSP.

I would have to disagree with the DS being a better machine, the DS is innovative, and unique albeit gimmicky with the touch screen. The games, while neat, aside from a few gems like FF3, and a scarce few others. The system hasn't (in my book) showcased what it can do powerwise. Not a dig at the system, moreso the company behind it. Now onto the PSP, as many people say the PSP is all "ports" (this is very true, but they are often great ports), they have some great games with terrific graphics and controls. Now, while the ports are there, they are still some amazing games. Play GTA on the PSP or the new Medal of Honor game, compared to anything on the DS, and you'll see the power and difference of the two. One huge auto plus for the DS is no loading times, the PSP is hindered by this greatly, but if you have the time to wait, again, the loads vary, and aren't all BAD, but that is a big inconvience for most. Again, this is not by far a "bash" the DS post". I like and enjoy my DS, but I enjoy my PSP a lil bit more and to me aside from a couple gems, its been overhyped and underdelivered. I know the flames will come out... lol...

The only reasons I would get a PSP would be for Metal Gear portable ops and Silent Hill origins wich doesnt look all that great so far.
I had a couple chances to get a DS a last summer reaaally wish I had picked one up now.

I've had one since launch and to be honest if it had a library that was worth a damn I would liek it alot more. For awhile all mine had been was a portable NES, albeit with a pad that sucks ass.
Now with the PS3 connectability I'm starting to be interested in the system again, though the idea of buying PS1 games to play on it when I already have the games anyway doesn't really do it for me. But the idea of being able to remotely communicate with a home device is pretty neat.

I think I'll love mine after Silent Hill Origins comes out. Don't know how the love'll go after that. I've heard GREAT things about Maverik Hunter X so I may pick that up some day, and some of the other games I've seen have looked pretty decent, mostly the remakes sadly. The only exclusive game I can really recommend is Lumines of course.

I personally *love* my PSP, and am luke warm towards my DS.
If you have neither machine you need to take a look at the games you want to play for it (duh). I love my PSP because I've been able to play both GTA 'stories' games on it, as well as Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror, Lumines, and Burnout Legends (among others). If those types of games float your boat you'll definitely want a PSP over a DS (since the DS doesn't offer anything like them at this time). Everything else is secondary IMO.
I also love the emulation, the mp3 player, and the video player. I keep half a dozen or so albums on my memory card, plus a bunch of Looney Tunes, Aeon Flux, and Ghost in the Shell cartoons currently (nothing longer than 20ish minutes or so).
The emulation isn't perfect (the sound is totally wrong on the two Atari emulators I use), but it does the job well enough for my occasional tastes. I don't need to hear games like Adventure or Star League Baseball when I'm playing 'em anyway. I used to listen to other music back on the real things, and I can listen to mp3s today :)
I own a couple UMD movies (since the format is pretty much dead I've paid $15 and $9 for what I've got) and they're okay but it's hard to find time to watch a 2+ hour movie on a portable device. Still, they look good enough if that's your thing, and as I alluded to places are starting to clear out movies for less than half of what they originally went for.

everyones likes are different, for me i don't like the DS, i love Nintendo products and thier games, but this system is just not for me. the PSP on the other hand i wanted one since the first time i seen it playing, but waited to see what kind of support it would get (games wise) and lately they have been coming out with many good games (about time huh?) along with the games i do emulation also (just need a good atari 2600 one) i am a nintendo lover and i hate sony (even thou i have all their systems except the PS3) this is the first of their systems i have not had a problem with (knock on wood)

I got a PSP on launch day and ended up selling it 5 months later as it sat there unplayed very often. I ended up getting a DS which Im really happy with. Games on the DS are way more fun and addicting. I would get another PSP again per say if it was around 100 bucks. Not worth the money for a shiny ass paperweight. Just my opinion as I know there are many fans of the PSP out there.

I passed one up at launch and didn't get one until last spring right after Me & my Katamari came out. Since then i've gotten about 20 games and really only play a few of them (Katamari, Buat A Move and Dynasty Warriors taking up 90-95% of the play). The stuff I have is for the most part the good stuff minus a few Sony specific titles that are all over the PS2 (SOCOM/ATV/Ape Escape). I don't play it all that much (because of the general lack of unique titles, even though i've got stuff like Loco Roco and Katamari), and actually play my DS a whole lot more.

I've had mine for about a year now, And the only really good thing for it is emulation. Get yours used, But get one with firmware 1.50, Because you can download all sorts of stuff for it then, And you can still play games that require you to update the firmware to 3.0 (By using a firmware emulator)
Since I updated my PSP to 2.6, It has been sitting around, Collecting dust. But now that I can downgrade it back to 1.5, (And play current games on it without updating) I am going to be using it more.

I just bought one, and I love it.
Granted, I got it for $100 from a friend in mint condition, so at $100, I'm a lot more forgiving of faults than I would be for $250.
Again, only buy it if you already have a DS.
With that said....I LOVE the hardware. Everytime I turn on my PSP I feel like someone sent it to me from the future. It is so slick, so advanced, and so well thought-out that it seems impossible for it to be a product of current technology.
There are lots of great games available for PSP, although they aren't quite on the level of stuff like NSMB.
I am currently playing SOCOM (the 1st one) and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. It's very nice to be able to play a smooth 3D tactical shooter on a portable. Other titles I'm a big fan of:
-Killzone: Liberation (best game on the system, I doubt MGSPO will top it)
-Ace Combat X
-Medal of Honor
-Lumines/2
-Hot Shots Golf
-Liberty City Stories (I'm sick to death of GTA, but I know I'm the minority)
-Metal Gear Solid: PO
There are lots of titles out there I've yet to play too, so I can't comment on those.
UMD movies are overrated, IMO. I'll never buy one, as I don't like spending $$$ on a movie that I can only watch on one device.
Contrarily, the ability to watch MPEG-4 movies off a memory stick is GREAT. I can rip as many movies as I want from Netflix rentals and watch them all day on my PSP. This is especially great for stuff like episodes of South Park or whatever.
BUY A 4GB STICK!!! The memory stick multimedia stuff is the best part of the device. Everyone I know who doesn't like their PSP doesn't make use of this fuction like they should. If they did, they wouldn't be complaining.
Enjoy your PSP. Hopefully we'll all be playing Infrastructure Killzone in the near future.

My brother is giving me his for Christmas (with games, movies, and a 1 gig stick with emus) so I'm excited.
When he first brought it home, I didn't like it. the controls were too small I thought, and the first couple of games he had were not very fun (I didn't like twisted metal). I never touched it after that first day he brought it home on launch.
now that the ball is in my court, and I know that I can enjoy emulators and movies/tv shows on it, I'm pretty excited to get it.
Plus there are some games I would like to try (GTA's etc).
I'd say the PSP is worth getting if you can find a 1.5 and you have the cash.

I only got a PSP (a nice used one, with a big GS employee discount) for the retro collections that are on the system. Now that Powerstone collection is out, I'd say it's worth the used pricetag, if you can find a really nice used one.
As for mainstream titles on the system, I haven't been too impressed with any of them. The controlls on a lot of them make my (big) hands cramp up, so I might be a biased source on that.
Oh, and don't get a PSP before getting a DS, the DS is cheaper and a much more giving system when it comes to game selection.
But of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

I bought my PSP on launch day, and while the system does have some good games (just picked up Every Extend Extra and Lumines II this morning :)), I find myself spending more of my portable gaming time with my DS Lite. This mostly has to do with the load times -- when I'm playing a portable system, I usually don't want to spend all of my time waiting for the game to load (Dungeon Siege, I'm looking at you!)
If you don't mind long load times, and if you want the ability to watch movies on the go, the PSP is a good choice. Lumines and Valkyrie Profile are almost worth buying the system for alone, and there's a wide enough variety of games that any type of gamer can find a few they like. Plus, there's the whole emulation/homebrew scene, if you're into that.
If you don't have a DS Lite, I'd strongly consider getting one of those first. The games generally aren't as pretty as those on the PSP, but the fast loading and game selections are more 'portable friendly'. Plus, Phoenix Wright *is* worth the price of a DS by itself, at least in my opinion. ;)

Im just disapointed japanese titles like suikoden 1 and 2 , tales of phantasia , tales of destiny 2 , disgea, parappa the rapper wont make it to the usa psp lineup(all ports but freakin sweet ports). Hell I was waiting on tales of eternia to come to the usa but i just got a european copy when I realized and found out its not coming.

OMFG, that's a good point- TRUE STORY: I was doing my laundry, and I was playing Dungeon Siege while waiting, and I literally dosed off during one of the (many) loading screens. Wow, so many loading screens...
