I just sold a copy of Final Fantasy 7 non -gh (ebay) and the winner just emailed me with the following-
"this game works on ps2 which it states on your esite, cuz i bought the greatest hits last week and that didnt work..."
Can someone shed some light?

It's the PS2, these things are expected to happen.
His PS2 is probably getting a disc read error. Very common. He can probably play DVD-ROM PS2 games but not CD-ROM games on his PS2.
So tell that winner to get that laser checked out.

I've never had any issues but he may want to check the alignment of the laser, there are a million faqs they say how to do it. Most likely its not the CD diode on the laser as the DVD diode is the one I've seen fail the most often.

I own the greatest hits and have never had any problems playing FF7 on my PS2. The only disk I have played however is the the first, but I have put plenty of time into it without any problem.

I never had any problems with it, but I recall hearing something around the time of launch that when you have anti-aliasing for ps1 games turned on, some tend to crash more than others, and some dont play at all.
Perhaps its related to that.

i know sometimes when i put cd-rom ps2 or ps1 games in my system it makes a kinda loud noise and won't read the disks. So I put scotch tape around the inner circle of the cd itself and its almost like it compensates for missing CD thickness and the game plays fine with no crashing or noises.
