To add people all you do is go to the mailbox icon (the mail picture on the lower right of the main channel screen) and then click on the create message icon (the more center one on the lower left side of the screen). From there you then click the address book and then register. It will bring up two options , the 'WII' option and the 'Other' option. Click the WII one and then add the friends code, and then a nickname for that character, and done. Its all added and the text will show in black once they've added you back.

The email addition is for allowing your Wii to mail out pictures and stuff to email addresses and stuff like that.

Just a quick question? i got my Wii Last night (in the UK) and with all these friends codes can you play each other online? i did hear that nintendo dont plan on competing with xbox live? its more of a home console and you just have virtual console (online service) to get extra games etc?

You can't send requests to people that arn't your friends. They need to add your code and you need to add theirs before you can do anything with them (be it send messages, Mii's ect). The best you can do is go into your address book to see who's still that 'light grey'. Those are the ones that havn't added you back yet.
