So I come home from class today thinking I'm going to play on my almost year old 360. I open the tray, and put Gears' in. I wait...wait...and wait...then a message pops up saying "unable to read disk." I try two more games and get the same message. Everything works, except the games I put in the tray. Has anyone else had this problem?

Sounds like a DVD drive error. Time to call MS at 1800-4MY-XBOX.

it seems like everybody ends up with a headache and a sloppy system with the xbox 360. I own one myself and enjoy the fun the system has to offer. I'm not a fanboy of any particular system. But I think the 360 is the most poorly made system to have ever come out. I got the three red lights at one point and had to get a different system. Then even when you get your system fixed, you have to go through this big ordeal with re-downloading all the xbla games and calling M$ to send you microsoft points to be able to repucrhase them. Good job M$, you're really fXckin' things up around here.

PS: I own almost all the classic systems (genesis, sega cd, 32x, NES, SNES, jaguar, 3d0, Atari 2600(x2)+7800, virtual boy, gameboy, gamegear, saturn (x2), dreamcast (x2), Neo Geo MVS, ) and they all still WORK. Whats the big deal M$, halo isn't going to save your reputation for a system put together with duct tape and plastic chunks.

I just got off the phone with them. Looks like I'll be sending off my 360 for a bit to be repaired. The worst part about it is the console isn't covered by my warranty, which apparently expired last March. Has anyone dealt with their repair service? How long am I looking at being 360-less?

This is :bullshit: .

when did you buy it? I think you should be covered since they extended the warrantys of 360s manafactured before january.

I had to call them this weekend because I got 1 red light with a E 86 (I think) code which indicates hardware failure. I've only had this thing less than 2 months.

Anyway, they had me remove the hard drive, re-insert it, and it has run fine after that. Makes me worry tho.

they told me to do all that stuff too, then it work ok for a couple days and then it sxit the bed again. If you go to the forums at xbox.com and look under technical issues, you'll find PLENTY of people with lots of information about all kinds of these errors. You may not like the answers you will get from there, and there are a lot of loyal xbox owners saying they are thinking of switching to PS3 or Wii because of all the problems with the 360 and how they feel they are getting screwed by M$. But check it out over there anyways and see what some people got to say about it.

O RLY? I don't know any 360 owner that is switching to the PS3 or Wii because of a faulty system. I have a launch system and have never had a problem and I know alot of people on this forum that have NEVER had a problem. Those that have got them fixed with no real hassle. Just wait the PS3 fallout is coming, there just arent enough systems or games out there for anyone to care.

All your old systems still work because they and the current gen stuff share a big difference, functionality. Your old NES, SNES, Genesis or whatever plays games for that system, period.

They aren't backwards compatible, the don't use wireless technology, play movies, music, media files, connect to your computer, or the internet, there are no moving parts.

Have you ever owned a computer or piece of computer software that didn't require some sort of update or have any bugs? Chances are you haven't.

I hear a lot of people bitching around the internet about how unreliable consoles are becoming, forgetting the fact that this generation of consoles are basically mega PC's crammed into tiny boxes.

As much as it sucks to have shit break on you, when dealing with this kind of tech it's inevitable. You want to play F.E.A.R on something other than a 360? Go have fun spending $2000+ on a PC that will run it, and even then you'll need updates and patches.

Sorry for the rant, sucks that your 360 broke, hope you get a new one soon :)

A quick update, the console should be back with me in 5-6 business days. Might not be too bad.

Who's up for some Gears' when I get that piece-of-shit console back?:p

Mines been acting up aswell. Freezing and connecting to Xbox Live slower than usual. I'm calling MS tomorrow to see whats up.

I've heard you may need to send the hard drive, do they keep your save games or am I gonna need to back my stuff up on a memory card?

True indeed. 360 is a much much more complicated machine than the ones listed above. The more advance a machine gets the bigger chance for problems to accure. You also get the impression that its a huge problem with "every" 360 out there because of numerous of forum posts, but in reality its only a small precentage of machines that got errors (yet). However, i wonder how they test the machines before releasing them.

How long did they extend the warranty to? I have a launch day system. I have had no problems thus far but would like to know if I'd be covered should something ever happen.

It's not too late to get the 2 year warrenty (if it'll ease your mind, I know it did for me!)

I can't wait until they put this onto flash memory...

moving parts = bad products!

ahh.. why did they ever leave cartridge.

You still have GBA and DS hehe ;) But ye, moving parts = much more wear and tear. When flash memory gets alot cheaper you might see cartridge based consoles again. Now you can get many gigs on flash memory, but its too expencive.
