What exactly is the difference between all these arcade rom sets? Some of them have two or three different sets! Are the differences really worth keeping them all around?

No some games might just have a different censorship or some people rather play the game from the region that they played it but i would just keep the one romset that you feel like keeping.

There are many differences in some occasions, then again, sometimes the only difference is who the game was licensed to. But, Mame in it's ultimate wisdom to be "very complete" must include them all. I get them all because A. I have the HD space and B. I like completing things...especially when they are freely available via the I'net! :)

I suppose. At this point I'm keeping al the rom sets and prototypes, but I'm getting rid of bootlegs and foreign roms sets (do I really need the US, Wrord, Japanese, Hispanic, and European versions of 19XX?). Any reason to keep bootlegs other than the different names? Any bootlegs actually change the game at all?

In some games, the bootlegs are the working versions of the game. I know Popeye was like that for quite a while.

Well, depending on how your romsets are, you may need the JAP versions as well. See, if your roms are in split format you'll need them. Sometimes when a JAP version of a USA game is using the same romfiles, these same romfiles are left out of the USA zipfile. When you go to load a USA game in most cases, it will be loading the files from the USA version's zip, then also loading the otehr needed romfiles from the JAP zip in the background.
