with the explosion of action rpg's lately i'm kinda missing my old turn based random encounter jp rpg's. the new FF has done nothing to quench that want since it to has jumped on the "action rpg monster already on the map just like ffXI online which i was so sick of" formula. not saying those kind of games are bad at all...just missing my old style. so that gets me back to the question. can anyone reccomend a PS2 traditional style rpg for me (turn based/random encounter) other then legend of legaia or dragon warrior. thanks

My wife enjoys the Shadow Hearts series and I dig watching her play. Try those?

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne.
This is a solid traditional style RPG for PS2 I highly recommend.

How about Dragon Quest VIII, compared to FF series, DQVIII is way under rated IMO

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2
Best turn-based RPG's this generation.

Atelier Iris comes to mind. I think actually most of the RPGs on the PS2 are turn based aren't they?

The Xenosaga games aren't bad but they are heavy on the stories and cutscenes. I only played the first one but i liked it. People have already mentioned Shadow Hearts and SMT: Nocturne + Digital Devil Saga. Some of the SMT games are hard to find though.

I'd definately go with DQ8. Wonderful game and very very oldschool.

Turn based RPG? Eww!
Dragon Quest 8 I suppose...personally, I couldn't get through it without cheating and making my character a high enough level to repel random encounters. I wish I could've just completely skipped all battles in the game; but sadly a code for that does not exist.

Definetly DQ8 or a Shin Megami Tensei title. Can't suggest them enough.

Okage was always one of my favorite RPGs for the PS2, even tho I haven't even finished it.

OKAGE is one awsome quirky traditional rpg, its like it was made by tim burton, highly reccomended if you want a truly unique rpg setting.
Ephemeral phantasia was the first traditional rpg out on ps2, I rented it and really enjoyed it for when I had it. I can definitly see its flaws looking back on it but it is a true traditional rpg, with a sorta fun night and day system used for recruiting party members and doing quests.
Dragon Quest VIII! It's old school, it lovely, it's beatiful and it made me laugh! What more could you want?

My wife heard something where the Guitar Freaks guitar controller was compatible with this game during the music sections. Has anyone heard this and is it true or false?

Adding another vote for Dragon Quest VIII. It fits the bill perfectly.

You hate turn based RPG's but plodded through the biggest 70 hour behemoth of the generation, and not only that wish you could remove all the interaction the game offered?
What the hell? Why? You're a lot better off watching a movie.
And yes, DQ8 is your absolute best bet. You can pick it up dirt cheap everywhere and it's fantastic. Don't be put off the initial difficutly, it took a little bit of grinding right out of the gate (less than an hour) to get through the first dungeon, but the game picks up a full head of steam after you get through it.

yhea i found that kinda ironic myself about Xizer. that wasn't his first post about his dislike for all things turn based. still i give him credit for trying to help me and reccommending something. i also seem to be in a minority on this issue to but to be honest i kinda like "the grind". makes me feel like i earned those levels and adds a certain kind of tedious challenge.
