Hello everyone. Recently tried out the 1050 disk drive that came with my 800XL. Was told by the guy who sold it to me that it didn't work (he even threw in a PC-type disk drive, which was going to be part of his attempted solution to archive the disks, though I highly doubt it would've worked). Well, I tried it out with the disks I had, and ended up with mixed results.

With at least one disk, it managed to boot perfectly (the speaker made a bunch of beeping noises as the drive ran, ending with the game's main screen). For the three others I tried, however, I didn't have such good luck. Two of them make some beeping noises, then switch to a garbled noise, followed by the READY prompt. One actually manages to bring up it's loading splash screen (which mutes the beeping...nice touch), but after about a minute of loading, the disk drive stops running, leaving me hanging at said splash screen.

The main issue with these drives, according to one website I've seen, has to do with the read head sensor. However, the symptoms I'm getting don't seem to correspond to this, since it does manage to load one disk, and doesn't just give BOOT ERRORs. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

did you press the 'option' key while booting? some older games desperately need it ;)

So far, the only thing holding down the Option key (which gets stuck, by the way) has done is drop me into some sort of weird self-test menu. Allows me to test the memory, audio, and keyboard sections. Would it do something else with the disks that require it? The disks I've tested are all factory-made, if that matters (mostly Mastertronics titles).
