This news story scared the piss out of me...this guy has been through Eleven Xbox 360's...even an audio-log to prove it.
Man...
That scares me too. I plan on buying a 360 soon but all of these 360s messing up....I'll try to get another $20 and buy that 3 year warranty someone mentioned. How do those work? When the console stops working do you take it back to the store and they let you get another off the shelf?

Thank goodness for the new extended warranty! I had previously reported no problems with mine, but it gave up the ghost last night as I was very close to the end of Blue Dragon :(
Called MS, they'll fix or replace, but I'm wondering what's going to happen with mine as it's a Singapore system and I am currently in Aus. Hopefully they can get me an NTSC-J, else it's postage to Sing......

I had to send to MS repair like a month back because I got the 3 lights of death after owning it for 5 months, since I got my orginial console back it has worked like a charm.

I got my 360 on September 30, 2006. It's worked just fine since then. Discs come out HOT, though.

This is one of the reasons the internet sucks.
Stuff gets waaaaaaaaaaaay overblown. I hear outlandish claims of 25 - 30 % failure rates for the 360 (not on this board), and it's just plain wrong. Yes, some 360s have problems, but most are fine. My first one showed the red ring a couple times, but worked just fine after having those error messages. I sold it and replaced it, just for safety reasons. The second one is fine. I'm fairly certain a lot of people, once they see the red rings, are like "zomg!! failure!" and post on every blog/forum/website they can find about it. All my friends' 360s have been fine, with no problems.
I know there are failures out there, but the fact is A) consumer electronics generally only last a few years anyways and B) you're paying $400 for a complex piece of machinery that is way more complicated than old tanks of yore such as the SNES and N64.
Plud, with the new warranty details, it's pretty much a moot point. It's a pain to send it off, but there are other things in life besides games to keep you occupied for the month or so turn around. Microsoft offers the best warranty of the console makers these days.

I've officially had my 360 kill its first disc. I can now only play 9/12 levels in Civil War: A Nation Divided. I wanted to get to finish off the darn thing and get the achievements.... but NOOOOOOOOO that isn't happening with the amount of circular lens scratches on the disc now. I either hope that I can get a good re-surface on it, or that I can find a cheap used one to replace it. There is no way that the game is worth buying twice for anything less than 10-15 bucks.
Otherwise my system is still fine.

Well, I just got off the phone with MS Australia -- they'll apparently have my console repaired and back to me in about 2 weeks. Not so bad! I've got my DC to keep me company for now -- been neglecting her lately.
I did scratch my original GoW disk -- but it was totally my fault as I bumped the console in its upright orientation as I was playing the game. Tore that sucker up and good.

Scroll down for updates to my list. More dead systems for me.
I am on console number 4.
System #1) Bad hard dirve. I would get write errors at checkpoints in Call of Duty 2. Returned it after a brief 28 hours of ownership.
System #2) Purchased 8 months later. I figured I would give MS a chance to iron out some bugs. Froze consistantly after 20 minutes of play. It never lasted longer than 30 minutes. The system was kept in an open area with lots of air to circulate.
System #3) Replaced system #2 right away. This system would randomly stop reading discs on 3 seperate mint games. Back to EB for you.
System #4) Replaced system #3 right away this time with the Holiday Pack that came with GRAW and Live Arcade Unplugged. This has been a great unit that made it through 3 hour sessions of Gears without a hitch.
System #4) Red ring. I bought an EB 1 year warranty so I replaced it. I was hoping it would got he distance.
System #5) This is the replacement from EB. DOA straight our of a new box. There is a crack on the faceplate next to the hinge on the cover of the USB ports. Controller will not connect. Back you go.
System #6) To be picked up tommorrow. If it works it will be promptly sold.
I have been through six systems in 18 monthes. This is a joke and I refuse to be the punchline anymore. Bye bye Halo 3, I'm dusting off my Dreamcast.

Talk about character. Quick question why sell a system that you were having problems with? DId you disclose the problems or just cut and run. What safety reason does red rings cause?
Thirdly new electronics are supposed to have more than a 2 year span.
that is why reputable manufactures like viewsonic give 3yr warrenties on there products. 3rd my 3 saturns are 10 plus years old and is still going strong. 400 is 400 and is a lot of money for sub quality work.
All of my friends who bought a launch system had to send them back. with me being the last. That is to me 100 percent failure rate with my 9 friends and that is unacceptable. As far as complex goes it not all that complexs cpu's/gpus that are not properly cooled = failure. Your right 25-30 is outlandish try 50-75% failure rate.

As to the "see red rings" and go "zomg failure". The only red rings that are fine is the 4 red rings (video cable not all the way in).
If you have 3 red rings, sure your console might still work. For now, for 1 week, for 2 weeks etc. The most my red ring-er ran was a little over a month.
The freezes would get more frequent then eventually it just failed to boot with a continous 3 red lights.
Just sent it back (was sitting in closet as it was out of warranty). Received a brand new one from M$.
As far as the other question about the stores and the $20 rebates or whatever, I'll find out in a few days as my Core model is acting up. I think they just swap it out for a new in box one.

I've had my 360 since 8/15/06 and it's still working good, And It is on for more than 9 hours per day.
I've had a few problems, though:
System freezing (Mostly in doom 3, But it has also froze while I was playing 360 games)
One red ring (Wich doesn't mean anything, I just turn it off and back on and it's fine)
DVD Drive malfunctions (Like not opening or thinking that it is closed when it is actually open)
These are the only problems that I've had. (I didn't buy a intrcooler but it's in a well ventilated place)

I bought mine back in December and have thus far had no problems with it (outside of it not always reading Marvel UA properly...)
