I was looking through old Genesis commercials on YouTube when I found this:

Was the form of box art used in the games circled ever sold with those games? I've seen all of them with the 1990 style box art, but I've never seen it with the early style.

He's referring to the missing "grid" that original Launch year Genesis games came in (basically the opposite of the black grid on white background sheets the Sega Master System games came in).

I think it's safe to point out that the boxes were merely mock ups, since the commercial had to be done so far in advance of the actual air date.

Also note that the actual Genesis Launch System box had a Mega Drive shell for the game, so it's possible that the Racing and Columns box art are just the Japanese assets slapped on with English logos.

In fact...if that's Suppose to be Pat Riley on the far left, he has a HELL of a 'sun tan'. And if you look closely...the actual system logo is completely off-centered O_o

Apparently, some of the early first Genesis games came with two differents clamshell. As far as I was able to see, these were available on Canada. Here is some examples :

Evander Holyfield : http://www.guardiana.net/database/?id=339#v3082
Castle of Illusion : http://www.guardiana.net/database/?id=186#v2740

I have never seen those titles with the first style covers (except Altered Beast :) ) though the Super Monaco GP title looks to be in a totally different font than production. When did Buster Douglas beat Tyson? It was at that time that Sega went on to slap his name on Final Blow - an obvious shot at Nintendo at the time.
