View Full Version : Silly question - is this the WORST time to list items on eBay?

I mean, this season.
I'm really short in funds and want to list a ton of stuff, but at the same time, it looks like people simply aren't buying stuff this month. What with the holidays and all. It could just be my crummy luck...
What's your take on this? When do you think it would be "safe" to list stuff again?

I dunno. A bunch of stuff that I've tried selling before that didn't take, actually got sold for a cent or more when I listed them recently. That's fine by me, since I just wanted to get rid of them. So, YMMV.

I've got stuff ending as we speak and am getting some good competition on a few items, but a bunch are ending much lower than they are worth. Part of it is the closeness to xmas (Disney xmas items a week before xmas is a bit late to sell) and part of it I think is the market isn't hot for what I'm selling right now (Disney watches and some other related items). I'm also in the its getting out of the house boat so I'm not super sad about it.
Ebay moves in waves, even when theres the big ticket stuff. It happens.

Right now is good for items that make good christmas presents. Systems w/games, popular games, etc. Fixed Price listings are best. More collectible items are safe to list at the start of January. I'm too busy with other things or I would be cashing in right now.

um
this is the best season of the year for listing items, at least last week was for me anyways. i sold a phat ds system for around $120 shipped. i paid about $70 shipped for the system. i had similar profit results with a gamecube system and gameboy players. i also sold wired gamecube controllers for $15 shipped or so. i'm not sure about games, but systems and accessories totally make solid profit this time of year.

Yeah, well this year? I only made around $100 during the ENTIRE MONTH. Well, the first three weeks. This week doesn't count, because Christmas is in eight days, so people won't buy stuff they can't get before that date. :(
This has been the worst month for me by far. I guess I'm just very unlucky.

IMHO.. this ENTIRE year has been terrible for selling retro games and unfortunately.. it's getting worse. It started clear back around March. Everybody on evilBay (as far as older video games are concerned) wants everything for nothing. If I wasn't on such hard times I wouldn't be selling anything; but I've been forced to start selling my entire collection piecemeal. Whereas if you would have asked me last year whether I THOUGHT I could make any kind of profit on my stuff.. my answer would have been a resounding.. YES. This year.. on most of my things I'm lucky if I break even. The people on eBay (buying customers) right now are making the DP board members look like "philanthropists". I NEVER thought I'd say that! ;)
Having said that.. and despite this is the worst holiday seasons I've seen on eB since 1999 (I agree with Kitsune wholeheartedly).. things usually pick up AFTER the holidays. Let's face it.. all the little spoiled rotten brats of our great country are whining, crying and hitting up mommy and daddy for the latest and greatest right now (namely 360's, PS3s and Wii's) but after Xmas.. when the real "gamers" get some $ for Xmas.. is when THEY usually start buying the collectable stuff again. That frickin K-Mart commercial that shows the little smart-aleck kid playing "air controller" in front of the TV.. Ya' know.. the one where the mom says, "But we DON'T have an Xbox 360!" and the kid says, "Yeah.. I know!" Makes me wanna' puke. I'm 50 years old and I don't have an Xbox 360.. can't afford one let alone a PS3. If that little ingrate was my kid.. I'd stuff his head up inside a Power Glove and let him suffocate.

I just think most people are coming to their senses and not bidding stuff up to way over what its worth. Lets face it in the grand scheme of things is a game really worth the price of a car or getting into credit card debt..There are probally several people who collect that have the money and income to buy games but I have to belive by the number of games that seem to get passed around time after time to many people jump into the hobby wanting everything especially the rares and get into debt.
Plus the market for common games have become so flooded with all the resellers that common games arent worth more than 99 cents. Then you throw in the people that try to make more money on shipping by overcharging people wont bid. I know by selling you can send a loose cart anywhere in the US for under 2.00 dollars. Thats the biggest reason I dont buy on ebay very often I get sick of paying 5.00 to 7.00 dollars for a game for shipping only to have it show up in a bubble mailer with a 80 cent postal rate on it.
Then the other problem is a lot of ebay stores put prices only a complete fool would pay on their items.
The only way I think anyone will get prices over what a cart is worth now is if two people get into a bidding war.
And I think one thing is ,when it comes to any item its only worth what someone is willing to pay..

As a big-time seller, I cannot wait for December to roll around. Items I sell go for 10-30% more than they would the rest of the year. I post my brains out until the first week in January, then I take a break for a month or two.
Now is not the time to be selling used or non-mint items. Most people aren't buying for themselves, they are buying for others. Also, shoppers don't want to mess around with auctions; they want to buy now. I try to use Buy It Now as much as possible (90-95% of all December items), except for ultra-rare/valuable items that don't have a set/typical price.
This has been the best holiday season for myself and all of my selling colleagues. I've never heard anyone say that this is the WORST time to sell. If you can't sell an item now with several times the usual amount of ebay users browsing, when can you?
