Super Mario Bros Series Question

Well my main question is can anyone help me get an understanding of all the games in this series that were released in the US and when they were released.
I kinda need the help because I am trying to collect game series and I figured why not get started with Mario. I know this series has many branches such as the Mario sports games and whatnot but I would like the info on his main series and would like to cover all of them including the outings on portable systems. Thanks in advance for any help you guys have to offer. As a side note if anyone can catalog his side series of has info on those games that would be helpful too.

Be warned, the Mario series is big and ever growing. You might want to try something smaller like Metroid or Zelda first. But do what you want and have fun.
