View Full Version : more arrogance from Sony PS3

Companies love to brag about how their latest-and-greatest release pushes hardware farther than anything before it. Gears of War was the last time we'd heard such remarks, but Sony's President of Worldwide Studios Phil Harrison, who has become a treasure trove of precious PR statements destined for ridicule, believes PlayStation 3 will never be maxed out.

Speaking to MTV, he said "nobody will ever use 100 percent of its capability" due to firmware upgrades and new uses for the Sixaxis controller.

What he does want, however, is to change the public's perception of video games. Harrison believes the term is too constricting. "I fervently believe that the biggest challenge we face is that our industry is referred to as 'video games,' and games are supposed to be fun. Games should deal with fear, should deal with comedy and with death. They should deal with peril, with drug offenses."

So, more Grand Theft Autos and Resident Evils? Harrison seems to want deeper, more meaningful games, but where's the motivation to play if it isn't fun? Can't they deal with off-beat, serious subject matters, but still have enjoyable gameplay mechanics? Sounds like a Metal Gear Solid game to me.

If a game isnt fun I HAVE NO INTEREST IN PLAYING IT no matter how much EMO stuff is in it thank u very much mr.sony man.

Hrmm, nobody will ever use 100 percent of the systems capability? Could that be because no one can program for it? I have a PS3 and I'm very disappointed by the lack of software support for the system. Sony stop talking shit and get some ORIGINAL games on the market place.

If no one will ever be able to use the system to 100% of its capacity, why didn't they just leave out all of the extra junk that will never be used, and lower the price?

:-/

Its an obvious knock at Nintendo and the "fun" Wii. With a statement like that they may as well get out of video games and stick with motion pictures.

AGREED

Heres a stab at Sony by none other than TIME magazine;

“The big story in computer games this year was HOW TO BLOW A HUGE LEAD, by Sony [emphasis TIME’s]. Its PlayStation 2 was the champ in the last round of the console wars. This time Sony bet on a chip called the Cell and a disc format called Blu-ray. They're probably awesome, but how would anybody know? The PS3 is hideously expensive--it goes for up to $600--and Sony manufactured only a piddling few hundred thousand for the U.S., fewer for Japan. Plus it's hard to write games for; the launch titles were lame. You know you're in trouble when you get beat by something called a Wii.”

I'm sure Sony is in the process of making a game where your character bends over and 20 angry horses ravage your open behind. Pain and death would be vivid feelings in that game.

Where is the arrogance? About the 100%, that goes for almost every console. About the other, to me it seems like hes just saying his opinion. I dont see the arrogance, can someone explain?

Those comments don't really strike me as being different from anything SEGA/Nintendo did in the 16-bit years.

Company spin laced with BS, nothing new.

PS3 will never be maxed out? Hopefully that means people will figure out their farce and not bother with it.

As an aside, I can't believe they pay people to write like this in TIME Magazine.

It feels like I'm reading a post from "that guy on the board who can form complete sentences" in a GameFAQs thread.

I posted this to point out that Sony IS BEING FREAKING ARROGANT and we all know it.

This is not Sega touting "blast processor" for the good ol Genny nor is it Nintendo putting a spin on "mode 7" for Snes.

THIS my friends is SONY thinking that thier shit dont stink plain and simple.

ALSO I do believe that there have been times when home consoles were pushed to their max and used at least what one would consider 90 to 99% of its power EXAMPLES: Panzer Dragoon Saga on Saturn, Terrinigman or Streetfighter Alpha 2 on SNES, Metal Gear Solid on PSX are but a few.

What Sony is trying to say is that nobody -developer/ game studio or company -will EVER be able to push the PS3 to its limits wether it be a Square Enix,Konami or a Capcom and that is both ARROGANT and EGOTISTICAL.

Hell Im the last one on this board to "hate on Sony" or pull any fanboy crap since the PS2 is STILL my fav current system but to say that this is just more of the same of a company bragging on their new system is an understatement in my opinion.

If you're going to attempt to point out a game that isn't fun that sold well, you should at least pick one that actually isn't fun.

It's not that hard.

Madden.
Any wrestling game.
Dragon Ball Z.

I wish some one did invent a system no developer could ever maximize, then we could stop making new systems all the time and just concentrate on the games already. Afterall how could you justify makng a new console if no one can harness the power of the current generation? I know it's B.S., but I wish it was true.

Easy. more powerful systems allow developers to write sloppier code and still have it work wonders. Effiency takes time. Strapping a big engine under the hood is the quick fix.

No, you think it's another example of Sony being arrogant. I do not find this statement to be anything more than "hey, we have a great system and shitloads of power, buy it!"

This is not Sega touting "blast processor" for the good ol Genny nor is it Nintendo putting a spin on "mode 7" for Snes.Sega: A faster processor makes our system better
Nintendo: Mode 7 and more colors make our system better
Sony: Our system has loads of power to create wonderful graphics, that makes our system better.
More of the same bragging shit. -_-

Its nothing more than talk, and that talk is there to try and sell people on the console.

I don't take anything in press releases or self serving interviews seriously as it's just a sell or hype.

Like I've been saying for a while...I like the way you phrased that one, though. :)

This assumes that there is a conspiracy amongst developers to release below-spec games, which isn't true. Everybody (well, besides the budget folks) wants to put out the best game possible (on a budget, but you can still work wonders within that, mostly by reducing the amount of content, not filling up the disc, but the stuff that remains maxes the system).

I get kind of ps3 is meant to be an all in one device from his statements. I don't know why companies always strive for this and yet it always seems to fail (companies that have made video game systems, but are marketed as more entertainment centers for the whole family). I'm specifically thinking of Sony's pda line that was more than a pda (went for all in one type of thing with mp3s and camera), and then they discontinued all the clies (or almost all). With PSP they tried to make it a portable media center rather than just a video game handheld, and that doesnt seem to be doing too well....

Although I would have to say that cell phones seem to be doing well with their cameras and mp3s and all that other crap (i just want mine to hold a call).

Well.. have u ever heard of a company as big as Sony going out and say that their product sux or stinks? This is just marketing. When they say it will never be maxed out its just some marketing gimmick so people should think its incredible powerful because its so much power to press out of the PS3 that no1 would be able/needs to do it.

Exactly. I mean seriously, this is the same kind of shit the old crank who used to run Nintendo would spout off all the time. (Can't think of his name, man I miss that dude. He was good for a fun quote.)

If you've never heard a hardware maker say "We've created the ultimate gaming machine and no one will ever use all it's power" you really haven't been paying attention.
