Didn't see a discussion topic directed to the old games, and we all know how dirt common these games are. They are great when launched and many sports gamers flock to stores to pick up the newest each year, then of course the following year it's worth a dollar. Anyhow this makes it one of the least collectable series on any platform but is easily done. So without any more delay I had a few questions.
First off, how many people start off their game collections on a system with Madden and other sports titles? They are found very quickly and cheaply to get your feet off the ground and fill up your shelves. I personally stay away from sports titles until the home stretch to fill in the gaps. And out of those who do buy them up do you end up even playing them long or do your sit back for hours comparing each year seeing how they progress and the depth they went into with graphics, player stats, customizations, ect.
Second question deels with "limited" editions. How many are actually out there and are they actually worth buying? Of course for someone collecting varriants there is an importance. The other day I saw Madden '94 for Genesis that had a "Limited Edition" gold mark on the cover and came with all the inserts for $1 and said what the hell and grabbed it. I don't see "Limited" versions listed in the rarity guide so are they overlooked or do they just not matter? Are these just varriants of the covers to provolk people to buy them?
My third question deals with the inserts. Are there scans on-line someplace or are they a lost cause? Reason be it is that recently I've seen some games with all the inserts locally and could easily pick them up, scan and post them so people who randomly care would be able to look at the different plays, statistics and have the manual that lacks in many of the games I've seen.

I personally find myself playing Madden' 97 for hours, because to me it has the perfect amount of simplicity and realism to keep me playing.
As for collecting them I only pick them up if I can find them complete. I tend to find these quite often at Goodwill. I was also unaware of limited edition versions for older systems, I will look into it because I am also intrigued.

I officially own two football games. NFL 2k5 on the XB and Madden 94 (complete) for the Genesis.
Its all about playing with the Cowboys and doing a halfback toss to Emmitt Smith. Touchdown every time baby! Every time!

I remember reading through the latest edition of VGC and they had the Madden 94' Limited Edition listed for $20.00. I thought that was a bit high for a dated football game. I usually will pick them up when I see them for less than a $1.00 to fill holes, but otherwise I won't touch them. When I was younger I always bought the newest EA NBA game when it came out, Thank goodness I stopped doing that years ago. I did however buy NBA 2K6 Early this year during Circuit City's $8.96 sale.
Goodwill is a good place to find Genesis sports titles around here, thats usually where I buy them.

Yeah for me it was the deep bomb with John Elway. That was money every single time.

I believe I have the most immaculate, complete-in-box versions of Madden '94 and Tecmo Super Bowl for SNES in existence today. I'm not a big Madden or Tecmo fan or anything, but these have the team chart posters, games, inst., baggies, everything in pristine condition. Found them in a thrift store lot.

Game cartridge

Poster with plays on back
Two Madden NFL '94 player rating charts (One is for AFC)
Registration form
EA Sports-wear order form
EA Sports multi-tap advert
FIFA International Soccer advert

For me, I couldn't stand "classic" Madden. The fake 3D made my eyes hurt, and I just didn't enjoy it.
I played Tecmo Super Bowl right up until football went 3D on PS1.

I've seen more than ten (and possibly twenty) of that so-called "Limited Edition" game over the past two years.
I just thought it was some stupid marketing ploy. The one that's worth money is the rental exclusive one, I forget what year it was...

The only one that is worth a good amount is John Madden '93 Championship Edition, it was a rental exclusive and can be quite elusive.
The story with the "Limited Edition - First Run" games is that, they were all the first printing of the game, not really a marketing ploy I wouldn't think, and I believe that there are maybe 10-15 games(maybe more, maybe less) that carry that extra bit. Does it increase the value? Not that much, maybe a slight bit, but nothing much. Personally, I try to get those ones, i'd rather have the LE one but in some cases I have the regular one and settle for it.
hope i was of some help,
Dave

I just have Madden '97 on the SNES. I never play it. And it will be shunned whenever I do feel like playing video game football, because my copy of Mutant League Football for the Genny looks far more appealing.

It doesn't look more appealing. IT IS more appealing!
I hate American Football, but Mutant League Football is very fun to play and easy to figure out. It's as close as we'll ever get to a Nekketsu Football game. ;P

You just can't compare Mutant to Human league footballs! That's absurd and I know for a fact most employees at these chain game stores wouldn't even know what the hell MLF or MLH were. I know how to kill their conversations too. ie, they ask about trade-ins and tell you about some nifty game that's launching with a new gen system so then I'll pull out the "Oh, well I'm enjoying [insert gem game] on the [insert system they no longer carry], have you ever made it to level X on there?". They'll instanly turn around and walk away talking to someone else because you're no longer appealing to them.
But back onto topic though, yes I saw a bunch of NHL games today that had "Limited Edition" stamps like my Madden game. I've just never noticed it before and it is a bit odd. It is making me tempted to collect and buy some of these games when I stumble across the great conditioned ones and have the LE tag.
I still haven't heard anyone chatter about the scans. Is there really no site out there with them or is the demand non-existant?

A few years ago my friend and I would go to the flea markets and game shops and buy $1 maddens as a joke to each other as we are not fans of the series. So I have a bunch of them from the original on Genesis to madden on Saturn(acutally I bought 3 madden 97 on saturn for a $1 each just for the cases).
I did however buy madden on Turbo Duo as it is needed for a complete CD collection. I paid $19 for it a few years ago. Played it once and now it just sits on the shelf with the rest of my Turbo CD games. Honestly madden is better than the only other football game on Turbo - TV sports football

I'm just not much of a sports fan so Madden by default is like the last game I ever want to buy but my Genesis collection has slown down quite a bit mainly due to no longer buying loose cartridges. Because that's happened there's been a bit of a nagging on me to buy complete sports titles for $1 just to continue filling in the gaps and make it look like a bigger collection.

I've played just about every football game known to man. It started back in 1977 with the original "Football" for the Atari 2600. Three men, and steerable passing. Can't beat that! Me and my brother played the hell out of that game. From that point on, I've played just about every football title for all systems, in a never ending search for the best football game of all time. Here is my personal Top 5 Football games of all TIME
1. John Madden '93 - Sega Genesis - To this day, I still feel that this game has the best "FLOW". The best offensive and defensive flow, and the best balance. You can dominate a game with either offense or defense.
2. NFL 2K3 - XBOX - When this first hit the Xbox, it was pure football Nirvana as far as I was concerned. Some will has 2K4 or 2K5 is better. I still ultimately prefer 2K3. 2K5 is really good, but I think they went overboard with the lighting effects, making the game way too damn dark on certain TV's.
3. NFL 2K1 - Dreamcast - At the same time the PS2 launched with Madden, Visual Concepts followed up the original NFL2K game with NFL 2K1. Although slightly arcadey, and the player models looking a bit unrealistic, it can kick Maddens ass every day of the week and twice on Sundays. I bought a PS2 the day it came out, along with Madden, and for several weeks tried my best to convince myself that Madden was better, but after a few weeks I came to my senses and started playing the much better game again, lol
4. NFL GameDay - PS1 - The original GameDay for PS1 came when Madden was a no show during the launch of the PS1. It was a crucial game at a crucial time. GameDay was actually the better game on PS1 for a number of years. By the time the PS2 came out, all of the talent at 989 Sports had migrated to other developers, and the remaining 989 was a shadow of it's former self.
5. John Madden Football - Sega Genesis - I have to give special props to the very first Madden Football for the Sega Genesis. This game was so far beyond anything else in the marketplace at the time that it wasn't even funny. I had just bought TV Sports Football a few weeks prior to Madden being released on the Genesis, and at the time, me and my buddies actually thought that TV Sports Football was really good, lol. But when Madden hit, it was like the day the earth stood still in comparison. TV Sports Football didn't get played a single time after the arrival of Madden. It was a true breakthrough. The game engine that came with that game was essentially the same engine that was used (of course refined a million times) all the way through the 16 bit, 32 bit and 64 bit era's.

Ha ha, man that is so true. I think every other game I owned collected dust for months when I bought that first Madden. Probably until '92 came out, lol.

My only contribution here would be that there is no excuse for not being able to locate complete versions for most of these sports games if you are a serious collector. Especially if someone is collecting for the Genesis. The EA and Sega Sports games are everywhere. For some reason, most of the sports games I find in Goodwill or at a pawn shop are always complete. I assume this was because some of them were played by older kids or adults, who thought it was best to keep them in the box and to make sure they had the manual.

I'd guess it's mainly because I don't generally pay attention to sports titles for collection purposes because they are so common, but around here I find just so many loose Genesis sports titles. There are times where I go into a store and find them stacked boxed but even then they usually don't have inserts or are for some reason in the wrong case! I've found this quite common to see things misplaced, incomplete or in some form all torn up to where it's as if someone used the manual as toilet paper. I've managed to find other EA games with the Limited Edition seal (since my initial post) mainly due to paying more attention to the front case details and is something I'm not looking for over ones without it. I guess it's the pickiness inside me that doesn't like to play Madden games but wants to buy them to fill in the gaps.

you should try Jerry Glanvilles Pig Skin Footbrawl. i thought it was better than mutant league, but that just me. caveman football is where its at. why jerry glanville put his name on this, i have no idea.
