I was planning on putting my christmas money toward a new TV. I'm leaning toward an LCD at the moment, due to space constraints in my room, but I was wondering how well a, say, SNES would show up on one. What sayeth the Roundtable?

Gaming on an LCD isn't bad, at all.

The first thing you wanna look for (After the resolution) would be the refresh rate. If it's under 8ms, it's usually considered okay for gaming. Refresh rates over 8ms can cause really bad ghosting. The lower the refresh rate in milliseconds, the better.

The second would be the brighness - usually, the higher, the better.

LCD with Pre-componet consoles = Bad news period, maybe a Dreamcast through VGA is alright, but even S-video starts to look washed-out.

If you go for it anyways? Better make sure you get an LCD with at least a 10-15ms refreash rate or you may see some lag depending on the games your play'n.

I wouldn't recommend it. I mean, sure, at first it will be awesome. What, with all the bright colors, and vivid images. But soon those colors are going to diminish, and the image is going to start to blur. And then all of a sudden you'll realize that you are using your camera as a controller, and have been playing your Reservoir Dogs poster for the last 3 hours.

Oh wait...LCD...my bad, carry on.

CRT is best for older gaming and would suggest a large screen HD projection because it has the same resolution as a HD LCD or plasma and a fraction of the price. However if space is a constrant get an LCD ~26" and you'll be good to go. I currently have a 34" CRT for PS2, Saturn and GC games, 26" CRT for DC and SNES gaming and dual 22" LCD screens for PC gaming.

I found that gaming consoles that can't output progressive sucks on an LCD. A CRT for SNES, Genesis, T16, PS1, PS2 etc is better than an LCD. The best resolution for those consoles is to use RGB, Euro Scart, Japan Scart. If you really want to use an LCD then you might want to buy an upscan converter to convert the 480i resolution to 720p or higher. Try the XRGB3, it will upscan games via Japanese Scart or D terminal. I have a thread somewhere too that states the problems I had when I purchased a Samsung LCD TV to be used with my PS2.

Everyone knows CRT HDTV are awesome!

I picked up a Toshiba 34" Widescreen CRT HDTV for $899 Canadian at Leons! They still are stocking them too! Every system looks good on it. Has 3 A/V with S-Video, 2 Component, 1 HDMI.... can do 480i/480p, 540p/1080i and 720p!!

XBox 360 looks superb on it, as well as DVDS.

CRT's might be bulky, but they are the best bang for the buck!

For the most part (and I'm not saying all here), LCD and plasma will be great for HD and fairly rubbish for SD output. There are some good TVs that handle SD well, I've heard good things in general about the Sony Bravias for example. But yes, if you've got a lot of older consoles about, consider keeping a CRT about for them.
