If you could only own one console, which would it be?
Note that this doesn't necessarily have to be your favorite system, but the one that you think has the best library or the most reasons to go back to. Give a vote, and then some justification if you can.
I'm going to have to vote for the Playstation 2 right now. I'm a monster Super Nintendo fan, but its just difficult to not chose the PS2. The library is just massive with every genre represented.
Please note that we can only have 10 options in a poll--so I eliminated the "current gen" and went with "next gen" due to BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY.
This means vote for PS3 if you think PS2
This means vote for XB360 if you think XB
This means vote for Wii if you think GC

If everything keeps on track like it is now, definitely the xbox 360 then. It is the one I play the most and have had the most fun with.
Wii would be second though

Playstation 3. A MASSIVE game library to draw upon for years to come. Not my 100% choice, but for a "one and only" console, no other system could compete with that kind of game variety. Plus DVD's. Blu-ray, man....Blu-ray.

Well, I am old school, and I had to vote for the Greatest system of all time.
The SNES/ Super Nintendo... I know I could have voted for the Wii..
But if I could only have one system, I want the original, not a new console with Virtual Console. Something about having the cartridge physically in my hand..
Nice Topic.

I voted for the NES. I think there are better game libraries but none of them make me feel as good as the NES library does. I don't even consider graphics a factor since something new will put them all to shame in the relatively near future.
Actually, if I can choose the new NES/SNES combo systems, I'd take that! As long as I can replace it every 3 weeks when it breaks. (They seem really cheap, don't they?)

As much as I love the NES, I'm going to have to say the SNES. It's really a close call between the two so the deciding factors are the generic differences between them. Better visuals, sound, gameplay depth...
The NES is my all time fav but if I had to own only one...it's the SNES. Gosh, that's a tough decision...no more Punch-out, SMB, Double Dragon, 1942...
I'm glad I'm a collector & I don't have to make that decision. I can have them all!!

I Love 2D fighters so I will go with a NEO GEO.

I wanted to say Playstation 3, but I had to go with the Saturn. While the selection of great games for the Playstation and Playstation 2 may be great, I like the Saturn library a lot.
It's filled with excellent 2-D fighters along with some good 3-D fighters. Also lots of great shooters and a good RPG hear and there. I'm disappointed Sonic Xtreme never was released, but honestly Sonic Jam and Sonic 3-D Blast provide enough enjoyment. Also lots of great racers like Sega Rally Championship. Plus a few great light gun games thrown in there, Virtua cop, Virtua Cop 2, House of the Dead.
There are also many unique gameplay experiences to have on the Saturn with games like NiGHTs Into Dreams. But of course I wouldn't pick the Saturn if I couldn't import.

Some Sega Saturn love over here. I could spend a whole life playing all the Saturn titles from the regions. The system just has so much to offer! Second would be a toss-up between the Dreamcast and Super Nintendo.

I picked other, my vote was for the DS. It has a vast choice of games and you can take it any where, and all the games are pick up and play, no need to commit to them for hours on end. It is not on the list, but that is my personal choice for sure.

Sega Dreamcast (IMO) has the best game library, as small as it might be.
So that's my vote...

This is getting quite interesting. I really thought we would have seen a lot more love for the Playstation 3 thus far. Not because the current console is worth it really---but because of the incredible back catalog. It has easily over 2000 games to chose from. For those of you that chose a system that is not listed, I'm sorry for forcing you to chose other. I really wrestled with adding the Neo Geo---but figured most people play those games (King of Fighter series, Metal Slug series) on the Playstation now for convenience.
I would be very interested to hear more from the guys who chose the NES or Atari. I love both of those systems, I do. But how can you justify golden age classics over a monster selection of modern gaming? I know this is largely semantics BUT you could potentially emulate the NES/Atari on the PS2. I didn't set any rules on what your ONLY console could or couldn't do. :)
And yes, sorry for not adding the Dreamcast. That was a tough one to eliminate.

I went with the NES. On the current Gen I didn't consider the back catalog from previous incarnations. I interpretted the question as PS1= PS1 games, PS2 = PS2 games, and PS3 = PS3 games and so on...... I realize now this isnt as you intended but I prefer to answer it this way anyhow otherwise the newset systems have too much of an advantage, especially the Wii after a year or two when there are so many more VC games.
To me no game library has been so much fun for me as the NES and no library brings me back for reply anywhere near as much. Any system can be fun for a year or so and then die, NES has been delivering consistent enjoyment to me for almost 2 decades (1 year away from MY 20th year with the NES).

Pfft, PC FTW!
Who needs consoles anyway? You can just emulate them all on the PC.

I'd have to go with the DS as well, though the PS2 is definitely a close runner up. With the GBA and DS libraries, that's enough for me, plus portability, durability, and great screens. The PS2 has a HUGE library, but I just think there's a lot more FUN games on the DS and GBA overall. PS1 is where games started to kind of flag for fun factor and become bloated pigs IMO...lengthwise that is. It's a tough choice but aside from those two, and EXCLUDING EMULATION which everyone should be doing, the DS is the best.
I chose Saturn. Just barely edged out SNES. My all-time favorite systems (actually Turbografx-16/PC Engine would be in the running too). Saturn gets the nod because it has even better graphics/audio capability than SNES naturally. So much better/accurate arcade ports plus the best stock controller known to man. The SNES had Nintendo and Square's games though, so it was a close call.

I went with other and chose the DS. Great library of games so far, playes all the GBA titles and can play the classics with a flash cart.

Xbox 360 in first place with 8 votes closely followed by the SNES with 7 votes. I'm pretty suprised to see the XB in first place. And I realize that no one owns a PS3, but c'mon folks. There are 2000+ games you can play on it.

I picked the Super Nintendo myself. I can't see myself with a PS3 as my only console. Life without Mario? You must be mad! :D

Since this forum now lists who voted for what in a poll and I am forever branded, I was the one who voted for the Sega Genesis. Under the rules of your poll, am I allowed to take advantage of the Sega CD and 32X add-on's since you need the Genesis to play them? How about the Master System converter used to play those games? Or do I have to stick strictly with the Genesis library?
By the way, Sega has done a pretty piss poor job of emulating or porting their classic games over to other consoles so you have to understand the reasoning behind my vote.

It's not fair that you put some of my favorite classic consoles in this thread. However, I pretended it was a 3-way between Xbox 360, Wii, and PS3, so the obvious vote was for the X360.

Tough call. I went with NES. I know you can emulate on others, but it just isn't the same to me. I much prefer carts to discs as well. Great library with some of my all time favorite games included. Its hard for me to pick anything if Tetris, specifically Tengen, and Arkanoid are not included. Also having the vaus controller is a must.

Happy New Years bump. The more votes, the more accurate our poll! :)
Latest update:
360 + XB backwards compatibilty + Live Arcade = 20.63%
NES = 15.87%
SNES = 14.29%
Wii + GC backwards compatibility + VC = 12.70%
Other (Dreamcast, Jaguar, etc.) = 12.70%
PS3 + PS1, PS2 backwards compatiblity + PS online= 11.11%
Sega Saturn = 6.35%
Atari 2600 = 4.76%
Genesis/32x/SegaCD = 1.59%
Nintendo 64 = 0%
I have to go with the PS2. PS2 + backwards compatibility with the PS1 = Gaming gold. Most bang for your gaming buck.
The SNES would be my next choice.

I voted 360 because the emulation will be awesome for it and that gives me pretty much everything else. If I can't emulate then my vote would be NES.
