I don't have the gamecube version but I just found out it's only one disc. I loved the Wii version but felt the world could have been way bigger. Remember when Ocarina came out and Miyamoto was talking about how long it would take to walk across the entire world? I didn't feel like this game was that much bigger. Not that size matters but how did they fit everyting on one disc? It can't be the lack of speech because with compression nowadays audio files are tiny. You can fit what, 1.5 gigs on a gamecube disc?
Now that I Think about it, I'm not really mad but more surprised. Even though the world could have been bigger it felt like a pretty large game, at least more than 1 disc.
On a side note, how many multi-disc games were there for the cube? I know resident evil and metal gear off the top of my head.

Tales of Symphonia was a 2 disk game.

Killer 7 had two discs as well.

The second disc you see in most games though goes to high resolution textures, FMV sequences or high quality orchestrated music, none of which Twilight Princess contains. Like most (if not all) games these days, Zelda is the size it is purely due to design, and not due to the platform's size or performance restrictions.
They could easily make the overworld twice as big by using only a limited amount of extra space on the disc, but there would be little to no point in doing so, and the game's sense of exploration would most likely suffer from this as a result - Wind Waker anyone?
Regarding multi-disc Gamecube game, there was a thread about this a while ago which you can find here (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?t=92634).

Yeah, because a 50+ hour quest is just not long enough. We should of thrown an extra disc in there and made it 100+ hours. If anything, this should prove to you that there is no fucking good reason why we need to move onto a media larger than DVD (for games that is). No studio is going to make a game that is 50 gigabytes. If they do, I can almost gaurantee you that it will be occupied mostly with blank or uncompressed audio/video (anyone remember that trick?). Also, regarding the size of the world in Twilight Princess. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that you used a lot of warping to get form place to place. Because riding across the map on horseback is over 30 minutes long. That's just to travel. . . on horseback.

yeah that baffles me a little bit. If a game like Oblivion can fit onto one DVD then why does BD need 3? Unnecessary FMV anyone?

A lot of people I know that have been playing it are a little disappointed, not because the game is bad, but because it was hyped up so much. They just expected more I think, and most just passed it as being another Zelda game. I haven't played it yet, so I really don't know.

Another 2 disk was Baiten Kaitos

Tales of Symphonia was a 2 disk game.
Goldeneye Rogue Agent and Enter the Matrix were both two disc I think, which was odd to me compared to the PS2 and Xbox versions

I'd say that's completely it. Mistwalker simply made a traditional JRPG and that means like 100 Hours of 720p cinematics and 4 hours of gameplay.
Games need DVD sized spaces, movies need more. Worst part is Oblivion didn't even fill the Disc.
As for 2 disc games a know for certain
RE4
REmake
RE0
Killer 7
Tales of Symphonia
Baten Katios and it's sequel (both for GC vids)
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes

A longer Zelda would be too much. It took a lot of work to make TP as engaging as it is for as long as it takes to complete it. To plop in more land area would have meant more time in development trying to figure out how to tie this extra land in and have it make sense. A game is like a recipe-add too much and it can spoil the whole thing.

*yawn* well I'm sure there's some boring J-RPGs that fit the bill - if you want to walk around all day doing nothing you might check into those. In the meantime, us sane gamers will stick to the action.

Uhh, it doesn't take 30 minutes to get from one side of the map to the other. Maybe 30 minutes to ride everywhere on the map but I doubt it. Why don't you make a video and show us.
Oh and by the way, I thought TP was a masterpiece but I can find something to bitch about with anything. I guess I was just expecting more than one disc.

Why is Blue Dragon 3x DVD9 then?
Because it's a Sakaguchi RPG. You think any of the disc-based Final Fantasies were multi-disc games because of something besides the lavish FMVs?
As far as the length, everyone here can identify and they know it. Tell me you've never finished a good game and didn't wish there were more things to keep you in that world. Especially Zelda games.

Yeah, and most all games fit on one disc, too! (I can't think of any LD games that used more than one, I think I recall hearing of one...can't remember it though)

As for the lack of speech in the game ... I undrestand that I may be in the minority here, but I really prefer my zelda games without speech. It would have been interesting if everyone spoke in some kind of gibberish similar to Midna's, though, although perhaps different languages for different species.
The only reason I would have wanted this game to be larger is for the addition of orchestrated music. I feel that using midi in a game this epic was somewhat unforgivable. However, I'm betting they've got space left over on the disk ... I don't think even adding orchestrated music would have required another disc.
I can't believe anyone would bitch about the amount of discs used for the game. The game took me 44 hours to complete, making it the longest Zelda ever, and I could totally still go back and do about a hundred more things (heart pieces, another bomb bag, the cave of ordeals, etc).
Yeah, I know I'm often playing games that I'm completely satisfied with, and I think to myself, "goddamn, this game would have been so much better if I had to get up partway through and change the media. What the hell were the designers thinking?"

Midna babble > Okami babble

I finished this game less than a week ago, and I was really impressed. I trying to decide if I like it better than Ocarina of Time or not. The lack of orchestrated music does not bother me too much. What bothers me is when fake "voice ahh" samples are used, like in the TITLE SCREEN. Those sound really bad. Otherwise the music was pretty good, I think. There were some catchy tunes, and also some bland ones, but that's always the case. I don't think I would like voice too much either. The one thing this game needed is more random stuff to explore in the world. The world was big but it was rather vacant.
In regards to the above comment, I agree that the Okami babble was really bad. I only played the demo, but the babble reminded me of Banjo Kazooie or something.

The Okami babble was identical to Animal Crossing babble.
And YES THANK YOU SkiDragon, the MIDI voice "Ahh" at the title screen was awful

Zelda TP is long enough for me.
I did bother to do some of side quest and mini games.
Not to mention a lot of back tracking.. to find heart peace's and golden bugs plus the poes.
Ture if you play it straight forward and don't bother with other stuff, the game can be finsh rather quickly.
Right now i'm at the sky temple on Zelda TP feels epic enough for me.
