I got to thinking about C128 games as I got to playing Beyond Zork last night. So I started writing down games I knew existed for the C128 platform. Then I started searching and came up with some more. Can anyone add anything to this?

The Commodore 128 had a lot of potential for great games (double memory and speed)... wonder why so few companies took advantage of it?

I recall that my Commodore 128 mode was never used. I might as well have bought a C=64 and saved some cash.

Funny that the biggest publisher on the C128 was Infocom.. :D
Though they only published graphic text adventures for the 128.

Actually, Infocom did release 80-column versions of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Leather Goddesses of Phobos for the 128. I believe there was a 128 version of Hollywood Hijinx as well.

I think you're missing another Infocom text game. I can't think of the title. I'm not even sure it was released, but I remember seeing ads for it in Compute's Gazette...

Wishbringer?

Mind-(something) (Mindshadow?)

????

...Mindwheel...I'm pretty sure it's Mindwheel

I think Mindshadow was a C64 game.

I don't know how I came up w/ Wishbringer. That was a game for something somewhere down the line..maybe another C64 game?

Mindshadow and Wishbringer are both C64 games, but they may have been released for the 128 as well. Never heard of Mindwheel though. Do you still have the ad? That'd be cool to see.

You forgot Ultima 5. Ultima 5 has extra features that will work only when playing on C128 in 128 mode. (bg music for one thing)

hmm.. thats sort of a grey one, as it was made and marketed for a C64.. can you point me to more info on that?

It's in the manual for U5 that the game contains extra features that are available only in 128 mode but the graphics and gameplay is still the same otherwise. I could dig it up and make an exact quotation on this. Or you could find a copy of U5 disk images and run it under 128 emulator. (assuming 128 emu exists, I've never checked that one)

Here's the best I could do for Mindwheel info:

http://www.atarimagazines.com/creative/v11n9/78_Mindwheel.php

This is from the Creative Computing archive. The weird thing about this article is that it never mentions what system the game is for. But I'm VERY certain that this game was advertised for the C128 only.

(then again, it turns out the pub. is Broderbund, not Infocom!)

Thank goodness for CTRL-F!

Neat. Just for kicks I checked Lemon64 and it was definitely released for the Commodore 64.

The Commodore 128 was being sold while the 64 was still being
produced. Since it cost a lot more than a 64, new buyers went for
the cheaper model. And since the 64 was the most popular
computer of the time (perhaps ALL time) developers didn't see
the need to produce 128 only games since that would cut out
the much larger 64 market. Too bad it never caught on as
it could produced some great games. Its amazing what was
done with the later 64 titles. It also could have extended the life
of the 8-bit computer age. Since the 80 columns made the 128
a lot more useful as a word processor, not to mention the extra
ram.

The real killer for the Commodore 128 was Commodore.

The 128 was released the first quarter of 1985, but then 6 months later the Amiga 1000 was released.

sort of like Sega releasing the 32x and then the saturn a few months later..

Oh,,finding this link made me register the forum.
I am looking for Commodore 128 games as well.
I wish there would be a .dat file for Romcenter. does it exist ?
And what about software for the cpm mode of the 128?
is there an emulator that supports all three modes?

Sorry, I can't answer your questions, but thanks for bringing back this thread!

Here's another game for the list:
Mygly 128 (Pac-Man clone, 40-columns)

the following titles were never sold, they are homebrews.

http://destroy.austin.tx.us/commodore/c128/

Dominoes 128 v2
Landslide 80 v2 (election simulation)
Name Flash 128
Stock Broker v3
Blackjack 80 (unfinished, but playable)
High Rollers 80
1000 Miles 128 (Mille Bornes)

Should they be removed?

if they are kept there are other homebrews that will need to be added like Alien Invaders..

You forgot "The Last V8".
Also avaiable for the C64.
It was the only c128 game I ever had. Never knew any other 128 games than that.

Keir

It's there. Just without the "The".

What about Warp Speed by Cinemaware? It has a selector for both 128 and 64. I promise I didn't intend this just as a plug, but I am selling it on eBay:

Curious about that Hearts game. Was that a commercial release or was it from Loadstar (which is itself commercial, I suppose)? I wrote Hearts for Loadstar a few years back and was wondering if that's the one you meant?

It's a disk speeder, not a game. There were quite a few application / utility programs for 128 mode, but not many games.

I'm currently writing an article for RETRO GAMER - www.retrogamer.net - about the Commodore 128, and this list is really useful...

STRATTON on the C128 (By CRL, publishers of THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW) had more screens and more graphics.

I remember COMMODORE DISK USER here in the UK publishing several homebrew games for the C128, including a version of BATTLESHIPS where you had to use a monitor AND a TV, so you got two different displays.

I'll let you know what else my research uncovers...

My memory has just dragged up another interesting one... ALLEYKAT by Andrew Braybrooke uses the extra power of the C128 to add more sprites to the Katerkillar, more bullets onscreen and to run more effects on the title screen.
