Hey everyone,
I've been patiently waiting on picking up a 360 since launch. The last two consoles I bought within the first year of release have always been problem-prone, and there weren't really any games calling out to me, so I held off. But now with Gears of War out, and BioShock and Stranglehold just around the corner, it's much harder for me to wait.
My question, I guess: Have all the first-generation 360s with all the problems been weeded out? If I go out to buy a new system today, will it be more reliable than the ones I'd have bought in the launch batch? Are there any certain models to avoid?
Thanks for the advice!

I have an original launch day system with an intercooler. I never had a problem.
I've had mine for just over a month and a half now...it's a manufactured May '06 system that I got from Wally World. It has been 100% flawless thus far. No intercooler or anything playing for periods of 4+ hours at a time. Supposedly from what I have read the reported 360 deaths have been dramatically declining in the last few months.
IMO it's safe to buy it now.

Plus MS has a one year warranty for 360 problems, and if the first batch is any indication if you'll be having a problem it'll be in that time span.

On Gamespot they have a "Broken Xbox System" section over 100 pages long.
After reading some of the post, I wouldnt buy one. I was going to buy one before I bought a PS3, but that turned me away.

Do you really believe that stuff? I have a launch day system and I use it heavily. Microsoft has a warranty in place, hell, they just made a big announcement on the warranty too!
If you are avoiding the system because you are afraid it will break, I don't feel sorry for you in the least. If the system has games that you want, you should pick it up.
To answer the original question: You would be fine buying one now. It comes with a warranty if it does break. The actual number of systems that have to be sent to Texas for repair or replacement are very small. And Microsoft has been quite good about repairing or replacing systems. They are even reimbursing people who have paid for repairs, retroactively.
You should get a 360, it has a lot of great titles on it.

Meancode knows what he's saying. I too have a launch system with no problems. It's traveled from Nova Scotia to Ottawa and Back twice without any damage. DP member James has had his go to WI and back in one piece. Although to befair the first system he bought last June was DOA but we both agree that that's the fault of Kamino's driving.

If you still feel unsure, wait until MS starts using the 65nm chipmaking process in a month or so..
It'll cut down on the heat, and hopefully, it won't come with the power 'brick' anymore.

Actually it looks like that won't be until later in the year, like May/June now. There were some reports a week ago about the delay.
I bought one from Target with a 3 year warranty that cost an extra $20-$30. After problems with my original Xbox, the only system that ever broke on me (twice!), I do it with all the systems.
360 is totally worth it. Jump in!
