if you already own it on Dreamcast? I know Chaos Field has an added GC mode where as the DC version was pretty bare bones. Does Icky have something similar?

Reading the 40 essential gc titles left me wonding this as well.
The GC-version of Ikaruga has an additional practice mode which allows you to play each part of each stage (i.e. 2-1) in slow-motion. There's also a challenge-mode (you get a password for your score after losing the last life) which is quite useless now because the official password-ranking page for Ikaruga has shut down.
All in all, is it worth getting? Yes and no. Only if you can't get enough of that game and already own the DC-version :)

I say yes. And yes for Chaos Field as well. The version of Chaos Field on Gamecube is the remade one that has extras. Ikaruga on GC didn't translate the stuff when you see "Chapter 1" it just left it out. That is about the only downside to the GC port.

It's a good game and it's cheap, so why not. I just picked up the PS2 version of RE4 for cheap. It's just convenient to have a game like that across systems.

The Ikaruga port was pretty nice, but something you should consider before you pick it up is if you have a suitable controller for it. If you're comfortable with the dpad on the GC or if you've already got a decent pad/stick for the GC then it's a total no brainer, but if you find the GC Dpad uncomfortable or you don't feel like you should have to buy a separate controller just for one or two games, then the DC version is the one to stick with.
...of course, assuming you have a DC pad/stick that works well with the game!
Controller options aside, I'm going to join everyone else with saying that the GC version is awesome. The new training mode is invaluable, IMO.

?
Ikaruga cheap? This is one of the few games that holds its value year after year. Gamestop/EB still sells this for $39.99 used. I can't think of a more expensive GC game (used price) now that I think of it. You must have meant Chaos Field.

It's not really much better than the dreamcast one unless you REALLY like shooters or the game itself.
I'm not a big fan of Ikaruga, but it's alright.

Maybe where you live, around here I've seen it for $20 or less.

If you already have the Dreamcast version of Ikaruga than honestly I don't see any real reason to get the Gamecube release. I have both becasue the Dreamcast version was released first and when any shooter is released stateside , I make an effort to pick it up to support the genre being released in the US.
If you enjoy shooties and do not already have the Dreamcast release, by all means pick it up and give it a try. Its pretty decent -though I think its a bit overrated :ducks and hides:

I actually stumbled across Ikaruga at a Wal-Mart for $15 once only a few months ago. It may have been hiding and old inventory, as there was only one copy of it, though I've never seen it stocked before (after the initial release that is) or afterwards.

Wow. I found Ikaruga just last week and it was $45 used at GameStop. I haven't seen it since spring '06 and it was $50 new at that point. It's just not possible to find around here but is something I've kept an eye out for and want too. It really is worth a buy from side-scroller shooter fans and GC collectors alike.

I'm actually hoarding several new, sealed GC Ikarugas that I picked up for under $20 in the last year. For a long time I could find them everywhere for that, so I stopped buying them. Seriously.
Last few times I poked around, Game Crazy had used Ikaruga for under $20. I've saw alot of those around last time I was hanging out in the states.
As for the original question, nah, stick with the DC only if you got it. I think it's easier to play on a DC controller (I use an ASCII pad). Is there a similar controller on the GC?
I say get it, even if you have the DC version. Unless you have a JP DC chances are that you need a boot disc or some such to play the game; at least with the GC version you just need the system. Make sure you have one of the Hori Gameboy digital controllers (shaped like the SFC/SNES controller) it makes the game much better to play IMO.

Thanks for the input.
I'm sure some of you know, I'm not much a fan of this game anyway. I think if I can find it for less than $20 (which so far I haven't, PM me if anyone wants to sell one for less than $20) I'll pick it up, as I am a shmup completist. Otherwise, I'll just stick with the DC version, which is gathering dust. :)
Still, I like knowing the differences.

If anyone has one cheap please pm me. I can't find it for any less than $30. I had a copy for GC and traded it for something else.
