a new-for-the-time white 8-bit Famicom called the "Famicom Adaptor" (unreleased)
but was clearly a standalone Famicom console, not an adaptor for the SFC.
note: this was NOT the original Japanese Famicom from 1983 that came out before
the NES. it is a 1988 re-design of the Famicom styled like the then-new Super Famicom.

early pics of Super Mario Bros. 4 aka Super Mario World. some you have seen, some you may not have seen

Here are some more pics of an early Super Mario World. It looked very much like a 16-bit version of SMB3 back then, what with the note blocks, coins, square question blocks, and raccoon-Mario power-up. No sign of Yoshi whatsoever.

These pics, and the ones that appeared in other magazines, are usually identical. That means that Nintendo probably distributed slides or photographs to various magazines at the time. Only some of the images taken by magazines at the SFC show were from live video (or more likely videotape, given their blurriness.)

That redesigned Famicom looks so cool. I like it much better than the one they actually released. Too bad I'll never have a console like that.

Still 100x better looking than the fugly US SNES.

Also Raccoon Mario in SMW? Dare I dream how wonderful that would have been?

That little thing's adorable. What's that switch though, the one between the power and reset buttons?

the middle switch reads "Famicom" so I assume it was a switch Famicom mode for backwards compatibility.

this early version of the Super Famicom was seen pretty widely in the United States in Electronic Gaming Monthy, in EGM Number 2 which hit newsstands, grocery stores, etc in July 1989. it was right on the cover http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/5720/egm002ve3.jpg they had an article on it with some of the same info and pictures (but not as many). EGM took the info from this very article.

Wow, look at those shots of the early SMW game. That's fantastic. The early Super Famicom design is nice, too. Thanks for sharing. That's good stuff.

Anyone notice the wacky simularity of the proto SFM's controller ports to the GameCube's controller / power supply port? Nintendo seems to have a very limited / strict sense of design when it comes to ports.

Am I the only one who didn't mind the US SuperNes look? My only complaint was the saralee bottom. Everything else rocked.

I'm sure you are the only one who likes that 1970's spaceship design they went with for the US SNES. :p

Hehe ye, the US SNES is probly the worse looking console out there. Atari 2600 with woodpanel is in 2nd. Wood on a console? o_O lol.

I would have actually liked the game. I hate using the cape.

Yeah I could never get the hang of using the cape.

SMW is a good game, but it isn't anywhere near as groundbreaking as SMB3 was.

Has this prototype of Super Mario World ever been dumped? This would be interesting to try.
