I was reading my local free weekly Buy/Selling, Local Events paper and I came across someone selling an Atari with items. I was wondering what I should be looking at if I wanted to get into Atari ( I honestly have not played one since I was probably 7 or 8 years old)
The For Sale ad includes the following:
Atari model CX2600 with Manual
4 Joysticks
2 paddles
All Games Include original boxes:
Pac Man
Ms. Pac Man
Ice Hockey
Pitfall
Street Racer
Riddle of the Sphinx
Combat
Star Ship
Video Chess
Asking $100
As I have said I have never collected Atari, but this seems like a high price. Atari experts what do you say?

It seems real high. Call him and offer $30-40.

The boxes are nice, but for the same price you could get many more games either on ebay or elsewhere. I would say $75 to $70 would be a more fair price.

Two words: PASS. :)
You could easily buy the same stuff on ebay for about $25+shipping. The 2600 market is in the toilet right now, especially for the dirt commons listed there. What that means for a budding 2600 collector is tons of games for roughly 25-50 cents a game for anything - boxed or not - that's not considered rare.
The boxed Star Ship is the only thing that might fetch a semi-okay price - maybe $6-9 by itself - but even that is a fraction of what it would have sold for even a few years ago.

I think you were right about the market being in the toilet before christmas, but since then the Atari 2600 market has rebounded quite nicely. Especially when it comes to Atari 2600 systems.

even some of the rare games aren't selling for the $50 or so dollars that people are asking on ebay. The only one I ever see get sold for anything close to $100 is Swordquest: Waterworld, and sometimes Texas Chainsaw Massacre (I wish I had Texas). I'm still holding onto all my atari games no matter what the market does.

Seems real high, since all of the games are pretty common. The boxes are nice, but even with them it's still not a $100 package.

I'd say just try hitting up some local flea markets and do some searching for one too, cuz then you wouldn't have to pay for shipping. If not, ebay is definately the place to go if you want to get an atari.

The nice thing about buying these on eBay is that they generally are working. Not like other systems. $10 is way too much for the system you describe however. Show him a pair of $20's and I bet he takes it.
