Anyone know if all the games for Genesis that were released in a Cardboard Carton version have a Hard Case version available?

No...some of the EA titles were cardboard only, as were a few others, such as Star Control. Most of the normal red spine boxes had dual releases, but Phantasy Star IV was cardboard only as well.

Sonic and Knuckles was a cardboard only release as well. Damned Sega..

I made a reply a few days ago on the early EA and Accolade/Ballistic cardboard boxes. It's here:
http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9158
As far as the cardboard boxes, well, I'm not sure whether they have plastic shell versions for the most part:
Frogger, Monopoly, XMen 2 (Mega hits), Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic 3 (Mega hits), Taz: Escape from Mars, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Power Rangers: The Movie, Gargoyles, Xperts, Ristar, NBA Hangtime, Phantasy Star IV, Bass Masters Classic, Beyond Oasis, Zoop, Star Trek: DS9, Skeleton Krew, College Football II, Bonkers, Race Drivin, Exosquad, PageMaster, ATP Tour Tennis, Tecmo Super Bowl III, Kawaski Super Bike Challenge, Sonic 3D Blast, Adventures of Batman & Robin, World Series Baseball 96, The Tick, Art of Fighting, Battleship, Shining Force II, Wheel of Fortune, Prime Time with Deion Sanders, The Ooze, Desert Demoltion, World Series Baseball 95, Mega Bomberman, Light Crusader, Action 52, Ultimake MK3, Castlevania Bloodlines, Vectorman 2, Weaponlord, AHH Real Monsters, Comix Zone, Vectorman, Stormlord, Primal Rage, Doom Troopers, Arcade's Greatest Hits, Paperboy, Clayfighter, Tiny Toon Adventures
And probably more. :)
The ones that I'm sure have plastic shells are Clayfighter, Castlevania, Sonic 3, and Tiny Toon Adventures.

Castlevania Bloodlines has a hard plastic case. I only know that because I have one.

there are TWO versions of castlevania bloodlines- plastic & cardboard box. i think it was majesco who somehow got the rights to publish the title around the time the genesis 3 was introduced, and they bought it back as a cardboard box re-release with a small number of other genny games. that's why a LOAD of them appeared on ebeg and a few other game sites a while back... :-D

A few more cardbord box Genny titles to add to the list Port:
Barbie Super Model
Tom and Jerry: Frantic Antics
And these three were released in cardbord boxes & plastic:
World of Illusion (original black grid cardbord box! Sega release?)
Paperboy 2 (This is another odd looking cardbord box, beige colored box!)
Ms. Pac-Man (looks just like the plastic version, although there is a little difference in background colors around the text on cart. I've never compared the box to case.)
And these were games you listed above that were also released in plastic cases as well:
Taz: Escape from Mars
Super Battleship
AHH Real Monsters
And I'm almost positive I've seen these in plastic as well, but can't confirm:
*Frogger
*Wheel of Fortune
*Ultimake MK3
*Comix Zone (I've only ever seen cardbord, but there was an auction recently, for one in the plastic case (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3009846014&category=11062). The picture is gone now thou.)
Oh and there were two different Tiny Toon Adventure games: Acme All-Stars & Buster's Hidden Treasure, I have BHT in plastic, not sure which you were talking about.

Some games that were only released in cardboard boxes have had the cardboard cut up and inserted in a plastic box.

I've seen a weird one too, Ariel: The Little Mermaid in a cardboard box, and NOT in the red style either, it had the balck style with gray grid. AND color/waxy paper manual. (well the cover is in color anyway). however the INSIDE where the cart rested was red.
Why DID sega start producing cardboard boxes? They sucked ass. That's why NES and SNES players never kept their boxes and stuff usually cause they fall to tatters in time unless REALLY looked after.

I know what you mean, If you have a game with a cardboard box that gets frequent playtime, you can wear the edges of the box badly just by pulling the box on and off the shelf over and over again, not to mention the flaps get bent from opening/closing all the time. I would think Sega switched to cardboard late in the Genesis life simply to cut costs, obviously a smart move, anytime you can cut costs I suppose is a good thing for the company, especially since Sega by that time may have been losing big on their hopes for the 32X.

I have been wanting to compile a list of all Genesis games that have case variants for quite some time. I dug up this old thread and fortunately (Thanks to the hardworking DP community) a lot of the ground work has already been covered.
I took what has been discussed in this thread and tried to cross reference it with pictures on ebay and then compiled it into a more digestible format. After adding a few titles and clearing up some confusion on some others I believe we have a "solid" list here.
Are there any variants or Cardboard only releases that are missing? Can anyone help with the titles at the bottom rumored to have a variant?

Actually the Cardboard release is the only one I have ever come across. That's great news and why I wanted to create this list! I'll have to hunt down the hardcase variant of UMK3.
Ultimate MK3 was released pretty late in the Genny's life cycle so it wouldn't surprise me if the hardcase was for the initial run and then further copies switched to the cheaper cardboard. I would say that the hardcase is the rarer of the two.
A big THANKS to everyone else! I have updated the list.

Are you counting the Accolade/Ballistic and early EA hard-cardboard game boxes for that list?
They use a different kind of cardboard from the rest of those so they probably should be listed separately (much thicker), but it is cardboard...

I used to own a cardboard version of EXO Squad, sold it here on DP awhile ago.
Most of the copies of Road Rash II that I've seen have the thicker EA style plastic case and tall EA style cartridge. However, not long ago I found a copy that has a cardboard box, all one piece rather than the sleeve/ red tray kind. Also the cart is the standard official size with a red stripe on the left side. Manual is black and white. On the back of the box at the very bottom it says "Distributed by Majesco Sales, Inc"
I also found a Majesco version of F-15 Strike Eagle II, cardboard sleeve with red tray style. It doesn't say Majesco on the box, but it has a Majesco registration card. Manual is black and white. Oddly, it has a "published by Ballistic" sticker on the back.

I absolutely count them! If I remember correctly, these were all the same style of box, correct? It was a shoebox design where the top lifted off the bottom. Opposed to the later Cardboard releases that had the tray that slid into the sleeve.
I already have Star Control in the CB only list and it was released this way. I also believe Super Off Road was A CB shoebox style release as well. I will just continue to lump them in the Cardboard category with a "Shoebox" note beside them. They might be a different style but they are still CB material.
If we get a list going of these releases I will add them to the main list. Thanks for the help!

I don't see Mario Andretti Racing, F-22 Interceptor: Advanced Tactical Fighter, or LHX Attack Chopper listed.
All of these games were rereleased by Majesco in their wave of rereleases they did when the Genesis 3 hit the market. So they belong in the cardboard only or rereleased as cardboard categories depending on how their original releases were (I only have the Majesco rereleases).
I got Blockout as cardboard:

Ok, I went to take a picture of this so I went and dug through a box of games that I haven't touched in ages. It seems I was mistaken, it was just plain Mortal Kombat 3. :embarrassed:
I don't know why but I really thought I remembered seeing "Ultimate" on the box, for years I thought it was the ultimate version. When I've been asked what Mortal Kombat games I have, I included Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. I even kept an eye open for the regular Mortal Kombat 3 because I thought I didn't have it. I had forgotten about the Strike games. The entire series (Desert Strike, Jungle Strike, and Urban Strike) were rereleased by Majesco in cardboard boxes with black & white manuals when they released their Genesis 3.
Again, I'm unaware of how these were originally released, so they'd belong in the cardboard only or rereleased in cardboard box categories depending on how they originally were released.
Interestingly, only Jungle Strike and Urban Strike were released by them in their wave of 3rd party Super Nintendo rereleases at the same time. I never knew what was different about the SuperNes release of Desert Strike that led them not to rerelease it like they did the Genesis version.

Okay... I'm pretty sure it is supposed to be like your Budokan box. I was always led to believe that the early EA boxes were similar to the NES, Intellevision, Atari etc. style boxes. But when you posted that pic of Mr. Pond it confused me and led me to believe otherwise. *_*
Ultimately, it doesn't matter if I list what style the box is. This thread was to distinguish between what games came in Cardboard cases or the plastic Harcases. So the style of box is just a bonus listing ;)

As for Virtua Racing... Good question, I might have got mixed up with the Cardboard 32x version. I'll fix it later. Thanks for the heads up.

Yeah. I have it listed at the bottom of the list as Hard case with the rumor of having a Cardboard variant. I have seen the Hard case version. Until we know for sure if there is a Cardboard variant or not, I don't feel comfortable adding it to the master list.
Someone posted in a finds thread here the cardboard version of Buster's Hidden Treasure, I didn't know it had a cardboard version until I saw it posted. I think it was either this month or last month, I'll check and post the link once I find it.
EDIT: Found it.

AWESOME!
Thanks a ton! It's been added to the list.
Dumb, off topic question:
Were all EA games released in Japan with plastic cases? Every one I own, even older titles (Road Rash, John Madden Football) are plastic.

What about Earthworm Jim 2? I don't know if I've ever seen that in anything but cardboard.

I know this is an old topic but I found another game to add to the list. Beavis and Butt-Head seems to be available in both a hard case and cardboard box.
Hard case;

And Race Drivin' was on the rumoured list, I believe I can now confirm that there's two versions of this.

I have Phantasy Star 4 in a clamshell case. In fact I bought it at the Digital Press Store. I thought it was pretty unusual so I picked it up without question.
I thought someone may have cut the original cardboard Phantasy Star 4 cardboard box and fit in the case but the fit is perfect and I cannot detect any cut off text or art that would indicate that the cardboard was trimmed.
Did the game come in a clamshell in other regions?
Even if its fake I must say I am pleased to have the game in a clamshell.

It might be an old topic, but its helpful to some and certainly something that I want to keep as up to date as I can. :D
Thanks for the confirmation on those 2 games. They have been added to the list! I never knew Beavis and Butt-Head was released in a cardboard case. It must be quite a bit rarer than the hard case version.

It came in a hard plastic case in Europe and Japan, but was only released in a cardboard case in the states. If its the Genesis branded red label release, as far as I know, its a fake and something someone printed off.
You should throw some pictures up. I'd be interested in seeing it.

I also forgot to add that this weekend I came across the Sega Genesis 6-Pak game in a hardcase. I had only seen it in the cardboard cases before, but looking on Ebay reveals it was in fact released both ways.
It's been added to the list as well.

I have heard of complete Genesis collections, but I don't think I have ever seen one with all of the box variants.
Do you think anyone has ever done that?
Cardboard boxes are awful, so I imagine not.
