I really want to buy this just because the controller looks so awesome. But gadet-lust aside, is it worth it?

that's hard thing to answer.
to give you an idea I delayed my purchase till late 2005 when I was in Tokyo and happened to come across a used set for a good price.

Hooked up via Plasma screen with full audio setup it is something normally you can only get from dedicated arcade machine but at the comfort of your own home.
Sadly the on-line section is now offline for good but the single play is still fun for occasional blast... However I cannot recommend you to buy just for that only...

There are now drivers so you can use it on a PC, so it could theoretically be used for other games. I have yet to try it myself.

I am curious myself. I have been debating whether or not to shell out the $$ to get one. Just don't know if it is really worth the cost of admission.

Steel Battalion was the reason why I bought an Xbox in the first place. Although it's boxed up right now and hasn't been touched in at least a year, I don't regret paying $200 for it and I got more than my moneys worth out of it.

I've definitely enjoyed the game, and wish I could get my full moneys worth out of it but I've gotten completely stuck at the battleship part which is like the 3rd or 4th level so I would have to recommend no just cause of how many times I've played that level and gotten nowhere. I've tried gamefaqs and everything.

I thought that only the online campaign was shut down? Online free battles were still up last I heard.

Yes I meant in-line campaign which was the meat of the game imho.

I had problems with that level too. There is a trick to beating it though. In the far left hand corner at the edge of the dock, there is a building that is indestructible. You just hide behind that and take pot shots at the ship when it's not firing. The battleship wont be able to hit you and after a few minutes of firing, you'll sink it and go on to the next level.

This part caused me to quit for a time too. When I eventually beat it, it was because I found that you had to destroy the big turrets on the ship to sink it. Just dumping ammo into the side of the ship won't bring it down. And yeah, the build helps you wipe out that side of the ship.

As far as is it worth it, it depends on the money it will cost you and how much you like mech games. IMHO, it is the best and most realistic mech game ever made. Nothing else out there gives anywhere close to this level of immersion. Something of this nature may never be made again. But if you don't like mech games or aren't into sims with a high learning curve, it won't be your thing.

BTW, I saw one at a flea market last week used, complete for $60.

Hey,

I just picked up a used CIB Steel Battalion, game and controllers, for $49.99 - 10% discount at Gamestop. Does anyone know if it works on a modded XBOX? The reason I ask is that every time I get to start the mech for the first time, when I go to press the ignition button, it takes me back to the main screen. Not sure if I have a bad controller, or if its simply because my XBOX is modded.

Turn off IGR, or turn off the modchip. Had the same issue

What is IGR? I can't turn off my modchip, as far as I know.

It's a cool game if you have the space for it. If you don't have the space, the game loses its fun factory since you're having more of a fight with the controller than the robots in the game.

If you can prop it up on a table, get a good chair , turn the lights off and have a 5.1 system going, you'll love it. I had to play it on the side of a bed with the controller resting in my lap while I used the foot pedals resting on a chair-not so cool

In this case, it would mean "in-game reset". On a standard controller, you trigger it by holding in both triggers and hitting back and start.

I picked my controller and game up last year for $90. It was well worth the price as most of my friends get a kick out of it. It is a lot of fun, but I don't play mine much due the setup to make the game play comfortable. As a collector I would highly recommend this one. But, from a gamers standpoint, you might debait this one unless you have some where you can leave it setup. I hate digging this thing out of the closet.

Got it to work. You have to create a dummy file in your XBOX's E drive called "x2_IGR_disabled"

It's late, so Iam goingto give this a shot tomorrow. Looks pretty cool from what I see so far.
