Just opened the new issue of Tips & Tricks today and saw that the sequel to my favorite PS2 game of all-time is finally getting released in the US. Raw Danger (Disaster Report 2) is supposed to be in stores February. Was starting to give up hope on seeing this one since it's been well over a year since it was released in Japan and the original Disaster Report didn't get stellar reviews. The original still had a small cult following though due to it's unique gameplay and great story.
Looks like the disaster in question this time is giant Katrina-like flood. You can control up to 6 different characters and encounter multiple story lines depending on your choices in the game (much like the first game).
It's not listed on Gamestop or EB yet, which means it'll probably get pushed back to March or April. As long as it comes out though, I'll be happy.

Is that Sakura Zakashobotai? Goddammit, I just ordered the Japanese version!
I really enjoyed the 1st Disaster Report. Got it for pretty cheap too. Some slowdown in places but the many "Whoaa!" moments w/ in the game outweighed them.
It's too bad most gamers passed on it or even acknowledged its existence.
One of the best moments was screaming at/for the girl, who was right next to me, so I did it right in her face, & all she did was smile & wave...

I don't know much about DP2 but in the first one, you're a reporter who's stuck on an island that just experienced a huge earthquake. You basically wander around the island trying to find a way to get off before the entire place blows up (or something like that, it's been a while since I played so i don't remember the story that well). Most of the action involves climbing high ledges and avoiding accidents like fires things falling on you.
While trying to escape, you'll encounter other survivors and team up with them. The story lines will change depending on who you talk to and what items you pick up, so there are a bunch of different possible endings (I think there was something like 20 different possible endings in DP1).
Very unique game and unlike anything I've ever played before but like RJ said, it's not perfect. There is a lot of slowdown when you're in wide-open areas, especially when giant buildings are collapsing in front of you (which happens a lot in the game). If you can look past the minor problems like that though, it really is great game.

It'd even be better if this was a $20-$30 release too. I haven't heard anything on the price yet, but I have a feeling it's going to be one of those budget releases since the original DP was kind of obscure.
I was always interested in Disaster Report, I've seen it at EB/Gamestop a lot in the past and never got myself to buy it. I'll have to pick it up next time I see it,since it reminds me of SOS.

Sweet. I was hoping to see this stateside. Loved the first one besides the technical issues and the part where you have maunver above the tanker truck that exploded. Damn near perfect actually aside from that. Excellent story presentation. The one save you couldn't make still haunts me.

really its one of the ps2's most misunderstood treasures imo. it is really a great game with very unique gameplay. out of the obscure current gen stuff i try to buy, this has to be one of my all time favorites.

Ah, thanks for the heads up! I picked up DR last year for cheap and thought it was a great game! Always heard good things about it, so I figured what the hell....

Awesome news.
I just loved Disaster report. sure, it had some graphical flaws, but it was an experience like I hadn't seen before. I'll never forget trying to escape the baseball stadium as the pillars and crap are rolling down at you, or side stepping along the ledge of a building to try and rescue a trapped worker.
From the opening scene on, there is a great sense of not knowing what will happen next that makes the whole game exciting. You can't explore any building without constantly wondering if the whole darn place is about to come down around you.

damnit damnit damnit you beat me to it. i was bored at work 2 days ago and wikipedia'd disaster report, and was amazed the sequel was coming. i'm sure you guys remember me whining about how the stupid tsunami a few years ago soiled the USA's chances of getting the sequel translated. i urge you guys to repay the kindness of the publishers and purchase it at the original retail price, $50 or whatever.

don't you guys think it would be interesting if some survival-horror franchises picked up some of the ideas DR presented? i mean, we see leon and whatnot from resident evil survive a few days from zombies...but never eat/sleep/poop/drink and it would be nice to be able to navigate over rubble and barricades.

Same, I have always seen it but never picked up especially with the sequel coming out I will have to go and pick it up.
Cool great news though
Sorry to dig up a month+ old thread but I just finished DisRep. a 2nd time, loved every minute. Not too difficult that you get frustrated, interesting savegame feature & good plot to boot. Oh, & have something to drink nearby-this game always makes me thirsty!
I actually took a break from playing RE4 for this, cant say I regret it.

It must be OK if you passed up RE4 for it. I picked this one up a few years ago real cheap, but I admit I haven't played it too much. I guess you have to have a bit of patiance for this game, as my friends who play my PS2 found the game frustrating, and in their words "slow". Very unique game regardless
Well, that's just it- any "normal" gamer would easily choose RE4 over an obscure title like DRep. any day. But I have an affinity for obscure titles & now tend to lean toward the "easier" games. I like to keep playing b/c I LIKE the game, not b/c a game forces me to keep doing the same part(s) over & over out of sheer difficulty or if it seems next-to-impossible.
I'll probably still be playing DRep. for the 10th time after RE4 is long forgotten (& only played thru once!)
I heard RE4 becomes rather frustrating toward the end (didnt get specifics) & just the thought of that turns me off. I'm not sure if I'll even pick it up again (RE4 that is.)

I really like the obscure stuff as well...there's just way to many "me too" titles out there now.
All this talk about Disaster Report is making me break it out and make some progress in the game!

It's almost here! Here's the boxart for the US release: LOL
http://media.ign.com/games/image/object/703/703781/RawDanger_PS2Cover_USfinalboxart_160w.jpg
Supposed to come out in Q2 of 2007 but there still isn't any solid date yet. The JP release just came out Feb 21st though, so we'll still probably have to wait at least another 3 or 4 months. Does anyone else have the feeling this will be released as a budget title? I hope it is.
Just noticed the girl on the box...I wonder if that means more peeping tom action and taking photos up skirts like in the first one.

Yay! I loved the first one.
Except, well, I put a lot of work into playing it as well as possible and taking care of the girl as well as possible to try to get a good ending, only to find out to an ending that I would have a hard time calling "good" for anyone involved.
What's up with that boxart? It looks sorta silly.

Game is finally available for pre-order on Amazon for $14.99 with a May 29th release. I had a feeling it'd be under $20.
Now lets just hope the release date doesn't get changed again.
BTW, I heard that the new issue of Tips & Tricks has a complete walkthru for the game. Anyone see it?

$14.99 looks like the magic price for me, I think I'll bite. This game looks bizarre enough to be enjoyable.

This game is receiving some of the lowest review ratings I've seen in a long time. It's supposedly ugly, boring, and the controls are broken and sloppy to the point of absurdity.
On the other hand, it's only $14.99. Hmmm...what to do.

I dunno...looks & plays just like Disaster Report to me. Unless the game engine was totally re-done, I don't see how it could get such horrible reviews. I'll still be buying a copy as soon as I can get my hands it though.

Well, it's finally out. I've only played about 30 minutes of it so far, but Raw Danger is easily THE WORST looking PS2 game i've ever played. It's so bad, you could easily mistake it for a PS1 title. So it looks like they built this one from scratch and didn't use the original DR game engine for some reason. And the voice acting is some of the worst I've ever heard too. And don't get me started on the crappy camera.
It's not all bad though. Raw Danger still has that quirky Disaster Report feel to it. One of the first things I discovered was a hole in the wall that lets you peek into a ladies locker room. And like Disaster Report, it looks like there's a lot of different story lines and secrets to find too.
So I dunno about this one. Doesn't look like it'll be as good as Disaster Report but it could still be fun.

I'm sorry, but how could any game beat Bad Boys: Miami Takedown in the worst graphics department? That looked like a crappily programmed N64 game!

I've never played Bad Boys but from the screenshots I've seen online, but it still looks better than Raw Danger. Even when your guy runs in RD, his whole body is completely still except for his legs. It's so bad, it's funny.
And Raw Danger officially has my favorite worst voice acting line of all time. You're working as a waiter in a restaurant and asking your buddy why this rich girl is working there. He says something like "Perhaps she is trying to gain her independency." Who the hell talks like that?!? LOL

I forsee another Red Star style checking-four-stores-daily-for-two-weeks scenario on this one.
Only problem with games like this getting budget releases, really. Gotta wait on the USPS... -_-

It doesn't sound any worse than the original Resident Evil or House of the Dead 2. It always puzzles me when games have craptacular voice acting - are they just wandering up to random people on the street and asking them to work on the game?
Like Just Cause (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpURZpVM06U).
Driver 3 was like that also - it was especially horrible looking when the character jumped. I always put it into FPS camera so that I wouldn;t have to look at the janky animation.

Raw Danger has been edited. Beyond making nearly everyone Blonde, there are now scenarios that are completely changed with less wholesome situations being removed/altered. All this to get a T rating.

The main characters have blonde hair. The people on the cover are seemingly unrelated. Besides, I said nearly everyone. And yes, they also made some people blonde in the first game, thought not quite to this extent if I remember correctly.
Some info on the edits. Beware, spoilers. (http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=937274&topic=36098321)
I come back from vacation and to my surprise, I see this game sitting in the case. I just couldn't resist the flashy cover and the cool $14 price tag, so I had to grab it when I left.
I've spent a few hours playing it and I must say, it's a pretty addictive game. Some of the parts are hilariously bad, especially the one crack head looking lady that's looting a jewelry store. I also like how customizable the characters clothing can be, I was running around in a top hate, a yellow umbrella and red Santa boots at one point.
Definitely worth the price, it's a lot better than majority of the budget titles out there.

I saw it at EB yesterday - but I think the one I go to must be some sort of Bizarro world version, because they also had unopened copies of Taito Legends 2 (and this is a very small store).

I went into a Wal-Mart with my brother this afternoon, and they had around a half dozen copies in their shelf with all their budget titles. I already received mine from Amazon so I didn't bother. (I got home and realized that I forgot to buy the Veggie Tales PS2 game in a big box with a mobile inside that they had marked down to $7. Would have made a nice little collectible.)

Yeah, I finally found a copy of it at an EB yesterday. They didn't even know they had it, but I asked and they checked and were basically like "Wow, I didn't even know this existed."
I later went to a Babbage's in the same mall and they had a display box for it out, so...
Have yet to find time to play it, though.
