I just bought a pre-modded Xbox from someone here in the forms. Only problem is that it has a crappy Thomson drive and I'm getting DRE's sometimes. I'd like to swap it out with a more reliable Samsung drive but I know noting about Xbox modding. Is it as simple as just opening up the Xbox and swaping the drives. Or is there more to it than that?

That's what I thought, but think I remember reading something about firmware for DVD drives on the Xbox. If you replace a Thomson with a Samsung drive, do you also need to instal Samsung firmwre on the Xbox as well?

Firmware flashes are for LG 8164 drives (standard pc drive). Xbox drives don't need firmware flashing, just swap it out.

Alright, thanks for the tips guys. I guess my next question is where I can get a good deal on a new or used Samsung drive and what should I expect to pay for one?

Probably on the order of $50. If you are good with an iron, you might want to look into modding an LG8164 with an adapter so it works with the xbox.
