I read in the rarity guide that a boxed version is rarer than the game by itself. I was curious as the exactly how much rarer it is, because I know where I can get another copy of it for a few bucks, but I was wondering if it is actually worth the time and money.

I've been collecting for over 10 years and I've never seen a box for the game anywhere.

Yeah I just got one and am in the process of getting another. They are both of course from a out of business rental store. I was just curious because I plan on letting the second one go here on DP for a fair price. This is simply due to the fact that I am anti Ebay.

Ironically I think the copy I have is from the same rental chain.

It is just a display box, you can see in the ebay photo in the bottom right corner of the front FOR DISPLAY ONLY, therefore it isn't a real box, its just something that sat out on shelves before it came out probably...

That is true...but it never had a real box...

it is a display box and was also used on the shelves at rental chains such as blockbuster. the game was only officially release as a system pack-in. The box however is very hard to find and definitely a rarity. i personally did not count my us release list as complte until i had one

Hm, that would be a nice box to have. I didn't know the story behind it either...Fun game too.

Since mario tennis was a pack in with the VB it had no box. This box is a display box made for rental stores, But it fetches a good price on ebay. (The japanese release of Mario's tennis had a box, but that is different)

Yeah, like everyone said... the box was just for rental stores (AFAIK only Blockbuster, but I can't guarantee that). They're not particularly hard to find, since when blockbuster sold off their games, they usually sold them with those boxes, although of course a lot of boxes got tossed by the people that bought the games. They usually sell for about $20 max on ebay.
