View Full Version : New Ghostbusters game in the works!?! Updated 1/16--it's legit!

Well, I can't vouch if this is legit or not. However, there are just too many videos out now to not at least give this possible game a thread. It appears that either a dedicated group of professional programmers have modded Half Life or GOW OR are actually creating a new Ghostbusters game.
Even if this is a total hoax--and I assume we'll know shortly--the picture that has become associated with the game is just too cool to ignore. The entire gang in modern-style kick ass proton packs looks like the art work to a new movie. Who had the time and ability to create such a fantastic fabrication? The picture is attached below.
To make things stranger a user by the name of repligin (in the talkbacks on ainticoolnews) has this to say:
"Hey folks, I stumbled by this on the zootfly website, the developers of the video as seen on the youtube bit— “We are very proud to announce, with backing from Sony Pictures, Ghostbusters: Twightlight. It will be a rip-roaring action game taking you through the haunted streets of New York, and maybe meeting a few familiar faces along the way. The game will be based on the forthcoming comic book series from 88MPH Studios who were behind the successful “Ghostbusters: Legion”. Perhaps letting the cat out of the bag a little, the game and comic books will serve as a prequel to a brand new feature film." (http://www.zootfly.com/games. html)"
I tried this link to no avail and think this guy is full of crap, but any type of reinvention of the Ghostbusters is welcomed by me. If we're going to get 80's garbage rehashed on us late 20-somethings, at least make it a property that we love with the original actors. If Bill Murray is willing to make Garfield movies, why not a Ghostbusters III? By the way, the game video looks sweet.

Ghostbusters Game Busted
Developer confirms spook-fest is on hold.
by IGN Staff
UK, January 16, 2007 - Yesterday, our Aussie-bound IGN colleagues feverishly reported on several mysterious, leaked videos showing an Xbox 360 game based on the Ghostbusters franchise. Today however, we've gone one step further and contacted developer ZootFly to see exactly what the hell is going on.
Excitingly, we can confirm that yes(!) ZootFly has been working on a Ghostbusters game and the videos that appeared on YouTube are indeed 100% legitimate. However, the bad news is that the game is currently on hold.
Bostjan Troha, CEO of ZootFly, told IGN UK: "We are very glad to see the overwhelming response to the Ghostbusters prototype movies. What you've seen is indeed in-game footage of early prototypes on the Xbox 360, running on ZootFly's proprietary engine. Due to licensing issues, further development of the Ghostbusters game hit a bump on the road. But everybody here at ZootFly is working actively on resolving the challenges with the owners of the Ghostbusters IP.
"Not to lose the momentum, a part the ZootFly team is currently working on an original game called TimeO, which is closely related to Ghostbusters. The game follows the adventures of two die-hard New Yorkers. They get trapped deep in the shadow world of a parallel New York. The city itself is a war machine threatening to wipe out our world and they have three days to stop it. As soon as the Ghostbusters IP issue is resolved, the whole team will go back to Ghostbusters."
Fingers crossed that ZootFly manages to surmount those licensing obstacles so it can continue making our 80s movie dreams come true.

The more I watch this video, the more I am sure this is a Source Engine mod. I just can't imagine anyone would design a Ghostbusters game that let the proton beam destroy a building. It just seems dumb...cool, yes...but dumb.

It's a 300, or a magnum. First thing I though was "WHAT DID THEY DO TO ECTO-1!" Get that piece of crap out of there and bring back the 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor limo-style combination (hearse/ambulance/station wagon).

Argh, I've always fantasized about a Ghostbusters game, and this isn't it. I was wishing that Ivan Reitman, Harold Ramis, Dan Ackroyd and Bill Murray would get together and do some writing, (comedy writing!) record dialog and all that. It's just not Ghostbusters if it doens't have Bill Murray saying some quotable one-liner. And trying to make an Ectomobile out of anything but a 1959 Cadillac ambulance just doesn't work.
Ghostbusters is my favorite movie, by the way. So naturally I'm very critical of this.

I'll defend that last game, as it was pretty fun for what it was: a budget-priced romp featuring the voices of Bruce Campbell and Ted Raimi. It wasn't gold by any standards, but damnit, I've played far, far worse. Had it been released at the full $50 price point it would have been a dud, but for $20 it's hard to fault a licensed game that's actually pretty damn fun, even if it isn't really doing anything new.

I'm all for a new ghostbusters game, But I'd like it to be done right. Number 1, Get the REAL Ecto 1, Number 2, It better live up to expectations. Number 3, I'd like to hear some new quotes, Not old ones. Number 4, Why does the proton pack make buildings explode? Sure it does damage, But the damage is not that intense.
Ok, Now that i've said that, I can say the graphics look good and i've been waiting for a new ghostbusters game. (The only decent one is the genesis version ATM)

Extreme Ghostbusters was actuallly quite good. I just have issues with how dull the gameplay looked in that Ghostbusters tech demo. I'd like something a LITTLE more like Metroid Prime in the presentation but with a bit of mystery, a bit of exploration, a bit of tongue in cheek comedy. Something that uses the science of Ghostbusters rather than a blasting spree and tells a good story....I think it would be important for a game like that. It NEEDS a solid story and more mechanics than we saw.

The appeal of Ghostbusters is that this is their everyday regular boring job. They're like exterminators but with ghosts.
Just working class joes.
They are not super military troopers from the future.
I think me and a lot of people are saying that if a Ghostbuster game is made, it should be for the Wii
Proton wand - wiimote
ghost trap - nunchuck
Ecto-1 - steering via wiimote
containment unit - using the wiimote, you have to twist and turn the containment unit handle in a kind of puzzle like way in order to contain the ghosts within.
a bonus level where you control the Statue of Liberty through new york.
Would be a no brainer, but will probably never happen.

Y'know, those blasters don't look entirely dissimilar from the slime weapons from Ghostbusters II.
Anyway, to reiterate...

Something that uses the science of Ghostbusters rather than a blasting spree and tells a good story....I think it would be important for a game like that. THIS WILL NOT HAPPPEN! Much like Evil Dead and many other properties that have been the subject of licensed games, it is far too much to ask for a novel, enjoyable playing experience that captures the ingenious subtleties of the original! The best we can hope for is the inclusion of an emulated version of the C64 version on the game disk when it is released! Reviewers will spew forth with comments of unbalanced difficulty, annoying cameras, and sloppily-overlooked bugs! Earthquakes! Volcanoes! The dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifice! Dogs and cats, living together! Mass hysteria!
I'll be quiet now.

Ghostbusters was that mildly amusing one with the ape and talking car and chick from the future (based on a '70s live action TV series, IIRC). The Real Ghostbusters (later known as Slimer! and The Real Ghostbusters) was based on the 1984 movie. Extreme Ghostbusters was the "okay" sequel series to The Real Ghostbusters series.

"I'm going to be in a game?"
For a comedy that's 23 years old, Ghostbusters is sure getting a lot of attention. The newfound interest came courtesy of several clips that surfaced on YouTube in January which appeared to show an impressive-looking game based on the comedy classic. Later that same week, Slovenian developer Zootfly admitted it had a prototype Ghostbusters game running on an Xbox 360 but warned that development "had hit a snag" in terms of the IP.
"We hoped the publisher would sort out the IP issue in a jiffy and we'd be recharging proton packs in no time," ZootFly CEO Bostjan Troha told GameSpot. "Unfortunately, they didn't push to untangle the IP hard enough and the whole thing stalled a bit." Though Troha wouldn't name the IP holder, some speculated that Sony, which owns the Ghostbusters film rights, might scuttle development of the game rather than see it go to the 360.
Today, new information on the Ghostbusters project surfaced--courtesy of a member of the Ghostbusters cast. Touring in his native Canada as one half of the Blues Brothers, Dan Aykroyd revealed to the Edmonton Sun that he will be appearing in the game. He also revealed who holds the game rights to the film.
"Universal [Studios] purchased the rights from Sony for a game," Aykroyd told the Sun. "I'm actually going to have to perform and do some motion capture for them. That will be next year."
If correct, Aykroyd's comments have two implications: First, a Ghostbusters game won't appear until 2008--at the earliest. It also appears to debunk the Sony-as-spoiler rumor, although the blank YouTube pages which bore the game footage now read, "This video has been removed at the request of copyright owner Sony Pictures Entertainment because its content was used without permission."
One question the Aykroyd interview didn't answer was which company is publishing Ghostbusters. Given French media company Vivendi SA still has a major stake in its former subsidiary Universal, which is now part of NBC Universal, some assumed Vivendi Games would be distributing Ghostbusters.
However, a VG spokesman said his company has announced no such deal. "I can't comment," he told GameSpot. "This is a rumor and we do not comment on rumors."

Certainly understandable trepedation.
However development for this title began outside of the studio with Activision, Phil Harrison came on board Atari since the above mentioned games and likely recognized some brilliance in Ghostbusters prompting its purchase.
While I as well will await reviews and review scores before making a purchase, between the gameplay I've seen as well as those cut-scenes it looks like even if it's average over-all that it'll please fans of the movies.

Isn't the ghost-world-crossing-over thing reminiscent of that Ghostbusters 3 script that made the rounds many, many years ago? I cannot quite recall.
Also, I see the DS logo at the end there, but it will probably the same sort of mediocre cash-in as, say, Spore DS. (I suppose an update of the old Famicom/GB "New Ghostbusters II" would be kinda nifty, though.)

Demo footage (http://www.gamecinemahd.com/game/ghostbusters_the_video_game/videos/) has been leaked.
After watching the video I don't quite understand how you get a hold of a ghost with your proton stream. Do you just shoot the ghost until it eventually grabs a hold of it? Then it seems it's just a matter of tiring the ghost until you can trap it.
Terminal Reality did a fantastic job with the presentation.

After watching the video again I noticed Pete Venkman did say to "shoot him until he's dazed".
