Hey guys: I just got Contact for the DS. It's a great game so far with a lot of the quirkiness that reminds me of earthbound. Anyway, when you go after the 2nd cell there is a monster which you have to defeat by attacking its hands and head. Right before you go in, the professor gives you a message about attacking the hands "...for massive damage!" Does this phrase remind anyone of someone? Someone talking about the PS3?

LOL, that's it. Very funny that they would make a reference like that. How's everyone else liking the game? I think it's pretty cool and a nice departure from most other DS games right now. The only thing I don't get yet is why I need to play with Mochi every time I sleep. Does Mochi play a bigger role later in the game?

lol n00b!

Seriously, someone at the PS3 conference at E3 was playing the demo for Genji and said you attack its weakpoint for massive damage! And internet fanboys went nuts over it.

Contact had one of the best localizations I'd seen (though I had recently played Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime and that also had an amazing localization). Now, maybe some of the in-jokes in the game won't hold up in several years, but the PS3 jokes were great (there's another one later on) and plenty of other good jokes.

Sadly, the localization is the best thing about the game. The gameplay eventually starts to drag and requires you to do a lot of grinding and other tedious tasks that seem to just take up time.

Overall, I found the game worth playing just because of the localization, but that and the quirkyness rated it above average only.

Great character to the game, pretty tedious though. Didn't enjoy playing it very much.

It's one of those quotes from the awful Sony E3 press conference this past year. Along with RIIIIIIIIDGE RACER and 599 US DOLLARS.

From Wikipedia:
E3 2006 / Giant Enemy Crab

The presentation of Genji: Days of the Blade at the Sony press conference at E3 2006 has become derided on many Internet forums and video-sharing sites, and some phrases have evolved into Internet memes. For instance, producer Bill Rich, showing Genji at the press conference, claimed that Genji 2's battles are based on "famous battles which actually took place in Ancient Japan." The gameplay shown after this contained a "giant enemy crab" seemingly indicating that it has a more fantasy-based premise, rather than history-based. Popular memes from the portion include "You attack its weak point for massive damage" and "[...]Real-time[...]weapon change[...]". Memes also put Kaz Hirai saying "PS3 means real change..." directly before, "Genji is an action game based on famous battles which actually took place in Ancient Japan."; the irony of this is that action games based on Japanese history are numerous [and due to the fact that, of course, there were no "Giant Enemy Crabs" in Ancient Japan]. In IGN's E3 2006 wrap-up, they listed a number of Genji 2 quotes.

Several games have references to the "massive damage" quote:

* The Xbox 360 game Viva Pinata makes fun of the "real-time weapon change" and the "massive damage" quote [5].

* The Nintendo DS game Contact also makes a reference [6].

* Final Fantasy V Advance (for the Gameboy Advance) also made a reference [7].

* The demo version of MotorStorm features a "massive damage" reference [8]

* "Godhand" makes a reference in a level in stage 2 titled "Giant Enemy Crane".

* On the level of Elite Beat Agents titled "Rags to Riches! Go East Wildcatter!", if the player fails the section where they dig to New York City, they will be arrested and the player sees a picture of himself in jail with the caption "You pay massive damages"

"Massive damage" is overplayed. Seriously, I would've been embarassed to use it more than a week after it happened - probably when it was added to some of these games - also, nevermind that we used it in chat for quite a while; it was funny person-to-person.

I suppose I'm saying that what's funny between people gets diluted and even made un-funny when companies co-opt "our" joke, even if it isn't for the console wars (i.e. God Hand on PS2). Sony had it coming, though.

I kind of like this classic Sony/Ken moment myself.

And this banner we concocted over at NTSC-UK (my idea!) for when Sony closed down Lik-Sang...

Yup, that's it. Funny to see it again. For those that didn't know about this, it was jumped on simply because of the false hype that the PS3 had all year. Everyone knew the PS3 would suck but Sony kept going over the top with stuff like this.

Heh, I just realized that the crab materializes out of nothing. Great realism!
