View Full Version : Router for Xbox Live

So, I'm trying to play COD3 last night but I can't join any of my friends in matches because of an error which says something like "Can't connect to all players". I look it up and people recommend enabling port forwarding on certain ports.
I follow the directions on www.portforward.com for my router and the damn router won't connect to the cable modem now. I tried doing a hard reset to factory defaults and it still fails.
My question is this. What is the best wireless router for use with xbox live or gaming in general? Is it possible to get one that will throttle down the bandwidth on other connections so that my xbox live gets a good connection no matter who else is connected and what they are doing?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What type of router are you using now? Does it only have the problem for COD3?

Ya know, I bought a new router for this very reason after I couldn't connect in COD3. Several people in the Xbox Live forums said that the Linksys WRT54G worked great with COD3, so I sold my old D-Link (which even had a Xbox Live compatible sticker on the box) and bought the Linksys.
Sure enough, after I set it up and forward all the ports, I still couldn't connect to 95% of the games I tried to enter. And the few games that I could connect too, I had to wait in the lobby for about 5 minutes before I could join anyones game.
Call Of Duty 3 multiplayer is a broken mess (even after the patch fix...and a lot of people say it's worse now) and the connection problems don't have anything to do with the routers. Just check the COD3 Live forums and you'll see what I mean.

Got a link?
Regardless I have to get a new router because mine is toast.

Well this makes sense, I'm using a D-Link and it's not connecting to a majority of games in COD 3 either.
When I did finally get into one..it didn't seem fun enough to warrant buying another router. The router works fine with everything else.

I've never understood the need for port forwarding---even after reading the faq on that page you linked. I have a Microsoft wireless router, and a Lynksis router piggybacked to one another. Everything works fine. The only issue is that my 360 (which is hooked up to the Linksys) can't access the music on my PC (which is hooked up to the Microsoft wireless). Does port forwarding fix this? Regardless, I think I'm confused.

No kidding. I had no idea there were SO many problems with that game.

Yeah, the reason you can't access music from your PC on your 360 is probably because the right ports aren't opened on your router. It's easy to do though...just follow those instructions on portforward.com and it should work after that.
The only time I had to forward ports on my router was to stream media on my 360 from my Mac and for bittorrent. Other than that, I've never had any problems.

Considering that my PC doesn't even recognize that there is a Lynksis router in the network (cause its piggybacked on the Microsoft one) makes it difficult to even know how to fix the ports on it. Don't you have to configure all routers and comptuers to be on the same port individually?

Man, I didn't know it was that bad.

I have never had any problems playing COD3 online, before or after the update. I have the same router, make sure UPnP is turned on, you have to make sure your 360 is OPEN not MODERATE or Strict.

BTW, my xbox is screwed and M$ has decided I need a new one.
While I was on the phone with tech support they confirmed the port forwarding fix. They expect you to do this to play certain games.

That just shows you how fucked up the game is. It'll work for some people but not for others.
For the few days I had the Linksys WRT54G router, I tried *everything* to get connected on COD3. My 360 connection settings said NAT was 'open' and I even had UPnP turned on. Certain people just can't connect no matter what they do. :hmm:

That is messed up. Oh well I get to join the ranks now as well of the broken 360's, though I believe a two year old child is to blame for mine breaking. (though I can't prove it)I get a unplayable disc message on the disc tray listing no matter what is in it. At least its getting fixed for free.

Wow, now it appears the downloadable maps don't even work.
From Kotaku:
We've been talking up the new Call of Duty 3 map pack for quite awhile now, and today it is finally available for purchase via Live Marketplace. So what do you get with your $10 worth of MS points?
5 non-functional new maps.

BTW, I bought a new router. It's a D-link Wireless Gaming Router DGL-4300. I turned UPnP on and everything is ducky in COD3. I can join all the games immediately. Well, until my broken 360 f's up again. :)

FYI, I've had NO problems online with anything with my D-Link WRT 1510

BTW, this router isn't cheap, but it makes the port forwarding thing absolutely painless. All you ahve to do is enable the rule and the router already has the port forward settings for xbox live. When you combine it with the fact that this router automatically prioritizes gaming packets over all other packets to insure a good gaming experience, it rocks.

Is COD3 pretty much the only problem game on Live right now? I'm looking to get a 360 in the near future (possibly), and being as computer dumb as I am, I want to do things as easily as possible with a wireless connection.
